The worst thing in the world can happen, but the next day the sun will come up. And you will eat your toast. And you will drink your tea.

you, a reader: i really like your story but you probably don't care about in all the ways i like it
me, a writer: you realize you could talk about how you like my story for HOURS and i would be riveted at literally every individual moment
Everybody has a chapter they don’t read out loud.

A year ago I would’ve died for certain people. A year later, half of them are dead to me.

i feel like an atomic bomb, always ready to go off, please take me away, take me somewhere where i am alone, so that the only one i hurt is myself.
the stars were streetlights compared to her.
you were like a god. i was so sure the world started and stopped with you. how does the throne feel beneath you, i carved it with my own broken nails, just so you could sit above me. it hurts to be crushed beneath you, but it is pain i deserve, i forgot to worship you today.

i want to leave this town. how is it that it is not the people but the town, that grab you by the throat and chokes you, refuses you let you breathe, refuses to let you leave.

what if the sun fell in love with icarus? (maybe apollo caught sight of the boy, sun-streaked skin glowing gilded, feathers fluttering like slain daydreams, moth-bitten promises half-remembered & something lovely in his fallibility.) what if icarus fell in love with the ocean? (maybe he dreamt of her salt-soaked kisses, softness dotting his body like constellations. fingers laced in his hair like a crown for a broken king. a gentle swan song, a chilly numbness of unremembrance.) what if icarus turned away from the sun? (maybe apollo blazed infernos with the bitter sting of humiliation. singed off feathers one by one, thrust him into the frigid embrace of an ocean that would sooner kill than love back: a lesson to mortals who dare defy the gods.)

(i) aphrodite spends her nights stumbling out of bars the hands of unfamiliar men wrapped around her waist. she smells like hard liquor and cigarette smoke. when dusk turns to dawn she’s always the first to leave. always running. It’s better this way, safer this way she reasons. (ii) artemis traded in her bow and arrow for a gun. she still hunts she just hunts a different kind of prey now. she goes out at dusk and comes back home at dawn. bruised and bloody. a few bullets missing from her gun. somewhere buried deep in the body of a man who wore cruelty as if it were a second skin. who did not take no for an answer. (iii) persephone first saw hades in a club. He was the kind of boy her mother had warned her about. Boys like that her mother had said are nothing but trouble. but persephone had never minded trouble very much. she walked up to him her lips painting a shade of pomegranate and asked if she could buy him a drink.
