Howdy! I'm Rai, and this is my writing (read as: writing griping) blog! I'm pretty heavily set in the Fantasy genre, but sometimes I drift through Sci-Fi. Expect mentions of magic, mythology, and -of course- lots of dragons. Feel free to say hi! My characters might bite, but I don't!

New WIP who dis

I will make no excuses for my tomfoolery. My fate in life is to perpetually seed WIPs which take years to sprout and even longer to harvest. Weird analogy aside I come bearing an excerpt from a fun little thing about a famed, fatigued hero who gets sent on a fairy tale quest with a really snarky witch ✨

The markings on the cave walls did not belong to a drake.

“It isn’t too big, a warrior like you will have no trouble,” they’d said.

Eodenon’s furry ass it isn’t.

I scowled and ran my hand across the smooth, polished wall. The scales that had rubbed these grooves out belonged to a fully fledged dragon, not a mere drake. Perhaps not a fully grown dragon, if the size of the tunnel was anything to go by, but a dragon all the same. Significantly more dangerous than what I’d been contracted to handle. Were the people of the village fools, or simply cheap?

That had an obvious answer. They’d intended to short me. Wait for me to deal with the beast and then play ignorant, wring their hands and purses, and risk angering me to spare a few coins.

Ought to just leave the thing to eat them all.

Hands on my hips, I stepped back and contemplated turning around. I hadn’t gone too far inside the cave. It might not have noticed my intrusion yet. The cave was still silent and cool, and I’d seen no sign of life yet. I had time to retreat and reconsider the job.

A grumble from my stomach told me to advance anyway. No, if I went back to the village to try renegotiating my fee, the beast might notice it had had a visitor and take to the air, taking my pay with it. A shorted paycheck was better than one never received.

Scrubbing my face, I sighed and resumed creeping down the tunnel. At least, even if they planned to squabble with me over payment, I could still take the additional balance out of their pantries. I knew they had that to spare. The people of Eoden always did.

Describe a location through five senses without naming the place. Let readers identify it through atmosphere alone.

writing tip: don’t tell us your character’s backstory. don’t tell us what your character is thinking. don’t tell us what your character is doing. don’t tell us anything. the reader should simply look at a blank page and be suddenly overcome with emotion.

Good tip. I know a lot of writers who cry uncontrollably when they see a blank page, so I’m sure that feeling will translate directly to the reader.

do you ever just … picture a whole scene, a whole fanfiction in your head, you know how to place every single word of the english dictionary that you need (or your language dictionary), you know how to structure your sentences, you know just what your characters are going to say to each other and then… and then you just open microsoft word.

Its the doc! The blank document steals the ideas from. Your brain!!!! If you want to keep your ideas,, do NOT look at the doc when you open it, look STRAIGHT* AT THE KEYBOARD and write the first words to pop into your head! Once the document isn't empty it, takes away its evil power over you

Ties Thar Bind only got started bc I literally just starting typing the opening passage of Hawksong and kept going until the fanfic took over

Foxes and Fate only came together bc I opened draft 1 on the left and a new doc on the right and started retyping it word for word til the new words took over

Most of the stories Ive written with my wife started as texting ideas or bouncing emails back and forth til it stopped being chats and started being prose

Put. Words. On. The Page. Any words. Copy pasta for all I care. Blank page = blank mind sometimes. Defeat it with the power of Literally Any Words they dont matter they can be deleted later
