01. sleeping beauty
Now the darkness was shaking her… No, everything was shaking! It was an earthquake!! … Can earthquakes happen in lands made up of nothing but darkness? Wait, wait, she could hear something! It was that voice again, the one that told her… The one that told her she was dead. Wait, never mind, it wasn’t that voice at all. It was a voice she had never heard before. Slowly it broke through the darkness, reaching her ears ever so slightly. Only a few words and pieces made it through, but she did hear those dreaded words, the words every person fears and the words that put an end to your happiness. Yes, those words…
"…wake up…"
Those words, as much as she hated hearing them, brought her back to Earth or wherever she was. It was a dream, she was dreaming, and she could wake up. Usagi’s eyes blinked open and she was greeted with the face of her savior. He was tall with an athletic build, dark hair ruffled playfully above his blue eyes as deep as the oceans of the planet she loved- Bzzzp! Wrong!! It was a young boy that reminded her of her younger brother. … Did she have a younger brother? What was his name? Wait, what was her name? And why did she expect someone else to greet her when she woke up? Why was she so disappointed not to see him?
The blonde sat up, not really embarrassed that she had fallen asleep on some stranger’s lap. She was too confused for it to matter, honestly. Usagi opened her mouth, about to say something about how incredible it was she could sleep anywhere, when it hit her. She was Usagi Tsukino. Her brother was Shingo Tsukino, though that didn’t really matter right now. Tsukino Usagi, a second year in middle school and a bit of a crybaby. She remembered her family, her friend Naru-chan, and even that annoying Umino.
But she felt she was still forgetting something else… something really important too! Oh, right! She had forgotten about the kid right next to her! Flashing a smile that hardly seemed apologetic at this point, she attempted to greet him again,
"Sorry ‘bout that! You know I was up all night studying so I didn’t get much sleep! Hahahaha, yep, I really am a studious girl, huh?"
The smile on her face faded when she took another look around. Where… was she? The words blurted out of her mouth without any thought.
"… Where am I?"
Oh, Link was very happy when she started to wake up. He was worried he'd make her dizzy or something with all the shaking! She sat up, clearly confused and embarrassed about the situation, but Link just smiled and let her catch her bearings. He'd been there before. A lot. Pretty much all the time actually. Except... less falling asleep on people's laps.
Still, Link was able to understand the shock of waking up HERE of all places. He still had no idea of the actual location of the village on his broadened map of the Great Sea, but it was obvious this land wasn't an island... Clearly upon his death he was transported here, but why....
He'd been so lost in puzzle solving he'd missed the first thing's the lady had said, so he just nodded along with her. When in doubt, fake understanding.... (and then get yelled at by the big bad pirates when asked about it later and - oops - turns out he has no idea).
"This, um, place.... it's called Asphodel Valley." Link was used to helping people, but he wasn't the one who generally gave the information. He was used to be the heroic fella who stood there and spoke through his actions. "I'm dead." He scratched his head. "You might be too..?" He felt bad suggesting such a thing, but she was definitely not one of the locals and most of the out-of-town folk he's encountered have claimed to be deceased.
This place was so weird.
Woops? (av open/intro)
He spotted the other boy nodding, but there wasn’t enough time to do much else but nod back in a grim manner before quickly tossing the Pokeball of his Heliolisk up into the air, the candy-cane coloured sphere snapping open in a flash of light to reveal Clemont’s lizard-like companion: though the Pokemon did not turn to see Clemont right away, instead hissing at seeing the familiar sight of the ‘bad enemy’ that wanted to bring his master harm, he smelt… blood. His young master’s scent was mixed with it.
How dare they hurt the young master who had been so kind to him for so long? Wasting little time, the lizard crackled more, the electricity running along it’s scales intensifying and gathering at it’s frill: the shadow struck faster than the lizard could finish charging, but it evidently appeared that while the shadows had charged as a group, they weren’t too smart - the shadow had stupidly bitten right onto the lizard’s frill, and though Heliolisk gave a cry of pain, and Clemont cringed, both of them smiled. This was right where they wanted the foe, and with a shrill cry, the lizard unleashed the electricity it had been charging in a Thunderbolt.
Given that the shadow was biting the lizard, it received the full force of the attack, and practically was blown off the lizard’s frill (though leaving horrid bite marks that Clemont knew he’d have to tend to later behind) and sliding across the ground. But it hadn’t become a gloppy, generally disgusting-looking mess yet, despite Clemont’s worry for the other boy and wanting to divert his attention for a second to check on how he was going. It lunged again, but this time not at the lizard - at him, possibly because it saw the ‘non element using’ being as less of a threat.
Heliolisk was fast, but the shadow was faster, ramming into the boy and knocking him to the ground…but still, the smile didn’t leave the inventor’s face, despite the pain of being slammed backwards. This was a chance.
The Aipom arm lunged at the shadow again, it’s iron grip punching it directly in it’s…head? Okay, he didn’t honestly know where in the heck he’d punched it with his invention…but it worked. Perhaps a little too well, because the creature’s slime was now both on him, and Heliolisk, who had rushed to his side in concern to try and pry the shadow off. "Oh….that’s just degoutant."
Apart from being gross, it was terribly cold, almost like pools of water, the slime - but oddly, it evaporated soon enough, in the same manner the shadows themselves had tone on defeat. Wait, was that the shining of some…odd things where the shadows had been?
Oh, that disturbing fact could worry until later. Looking to the other, he seemed injured, as he was, and quite frankly just as tired-looking as the inventor knew he probably looked from the running, and the fighting, and the whole mess that had happened….but the shadows fighting him were gone as well, and they were safe. Alright, they were still bleeding, but they were safe, and Clemont gave a sigh of relief.
"Merci. Merci beaucoup, Monsieur. Myself and Heliolisk couldn’t possibly have taken all of those strange beings out by ourselves…we owe you our live….er…unlives…whatever you call it here, but…ah…erm."
Oh for Xerneas’s sake, that was awkward, time to try again.
"…That is to say, I’m grateful…ow.” Heliolisk drew near as the boy winced in pain, letting the boy use him as a leaning post to stand up gingerly, evidently still in a bit of pain from being knocked down…but Clemont was looking at both Heliolisk and the other boy’s injuries worriedly.
"….Mon dieu, we look a fine mess though, don’t we?"
That was…a really big understatement. Wow.
Upon seeing that all of the enemies had been defeated, Link gave a very inward sigh of relief. He really didn't think his shoulder could have taken anymore extreme movement. He sheathed his sword, wincing as he did so, and smiled tiredly.
"....I'm glad I was there, at least."
Being ever so good with animals, Link bent towards the strange creature, although he kept a distance. He understood how animals react when they felt threatened, and surly a strange face hovering right above it wouldn't help out any. It was still very cute! Link wondered if he could find an animal companion to fight with him.
Link silently agreed with the other, the three of them looked like they were in a bad fight... which is exactly what happened, so at least they looked the part. The young hero looked at his injured shoulder and sighed, this would take more than a potion to fix, not that he had any in the first place.
"....... I just got here, you know!" He looked off to the side. "I sensed something was off about this place, but... those things were a bit over the top..."
"There has to be a Great Fairy around here somewhere, at least......" He looked back towards the boy and smiled. "We can get you and your... lizard patched up!"
01. sleeping beauty
Every part of her body felt exhausted, as if it could give at any moment. Which made sense, after all, since she had just saved the world from total darkness and all that jazz. She felt as if she was in her bed, tossing and turning as she tried to get comfortable. It was probably already morning, she knew, and her mom would come in and tell her to get up at least 3 times before Usagi actually listened. She’d beg for five more minutes, perhaps arguing that teenage girls really need their beauty sleep in some sleepy garbled nonsense of a voice. And then she’d get those five minutes and more, and wouldn’t you know it? She’d be late to class again! That was just the way things were, though, and part of that was comforting. A life like that… It was completely and utterly normal.
But Usagi wasn’t quite ready to wake up yet. She still felt so tired, so drained. She needed like 2 hours before she’d be ready for dealing with the trials of middle school. There was that and… her dreams. She wanted to stay in this dream for a while longer, so she could see the end. In her dream, she was dancing with someone she knew very well, but his face alluded her every time she tried to look at him. Even so, the familiarity still existed, as did the comfort, and she felt warm and safe in his arms. If only this were real, and if only she could stay like this forever.
Then, he let go of her. That comfort was gone, but she saw that rather than leaving he was simply removing the mask from his face, albeit very slowly. Relieved, Usagi relaxed, until she noticed a darkness slowly surrounding them. The masked figure seemed to not care or perhaps he didn’t realize, and by the time he removed his mask the two were enveloped in the unsettling night except for their faces, which remained in view. His face flashed before her eyes, before disappearing completely as if he was whisked away by some unseen force. She couldn’t see anything now and the warmth was long gone from her body. There was only darkness and there was only that creeping realization that she was alone, she was helpless. A voice whispered in her ear suddenly,
"You are dead."
In the real world, in Asphodel Valley, Usagi lay upon a bench at the train station. She had been sleeping soundly moments before, occasionally murmuring in between the snores. Out of seemingly nowhere, she grabbed tightly onto whatever she had happened to be sleeping on, be it a person in the same situation or the hard cold bench itself. Her body was tense and her breaths rushed. Still asleep and unaware, Usagi yelled now,
"Mamo-chan!"
Her brows were furrowed and her face in clear distress. Unfortunately, she had no idea that waking up would only lead her into yet another nightmare. She remained asleep, trapped in the darkness and fear she could feel subconsciously, waiting for a prince or a mom to wake her up.
Rest. Link, the energetic Hero of Winds needed rest. This situation was too much, too different than anything the child had ever dealt with before. Not that he wasn't ready to stop up to the challenge! He just needed rest. He found a bench away from the creepy village where he judged himself safe from anything jumping out at him.
He allowed his eyes to close, and fell into one of his very favorite past times, sleep. He didn't dream, not that he did anymore, his rests never lasted very long, not since his adventure. But he remembered feeling weighed down by something...
A voice shook him out of his nap. Allowing himself a few moments of disorientation, he stretched, yawned, and looked down at his lap. The young hero blinked a few times, rubbed his eyes, then decided there really was a young lady using his legs as a pillow.
At least he knew where the heavy feeling was coming from. (Link had enough experience with strong willed ladies that he wouldn't let her know he thought she was heavy - her head was at least - when she woke up.) It then occurred to him, that she wasn't sleeping soundly.
It was his duty, as a hero, to awaken her! He gently nudged her shoulder, and when that seemed to not work, he shook her with a bit more strength. ".... Er....... Excuse me... You should wake up, miss....." He considered poking her head, but once he'd done such a thing to Tetra and his finger was almost broken. He decided to keep shaking her, until she woke up from whatever nightmare she was having.. Not that being here was much better, at least he didn't think it was.
Woops? (av open/intro)
What - what was the other boy doing? As he gasped for air and forced himself to his feet, Clemont very nearly fell down in utter disbelief at the other not running like asked, but rather, standing firm right in front of the mob of shadows. He couldn’t even ask the other boy what he was trying to do, being as out of breath from the mad dash as he was, but the sight of a glinting steel blade being drawn made his confusion snap away and everything click into place.
The other was armed, like some sort of olden-time knight - and wasted very little time in lashing out, the sword seemingly hitting nothing, but the shadow it struck melting into…a rather disgusting-looking glop of black melted mess that resembled tar or something, an it distracted him as much as it had the other boy, Clemont jumping as another shadow tried and failed to assault the new ‘target’.
Well…though the number of shadows had dimmed, it would hardly be fair for him to leave them to the other, as skilled as with a blade as he seemed to be. Taking a deep breath in to try and recover a bit more, he tapped in between his glasses. "Citronic Gear, activate!"
At his voice and the button to turn the backpack on being registered, a long, robotic arm extended from the backpack, as well as a small antenna to power said arm - his Aipom Arm, which extended as Clemont threw out his own right arm - and slammed with a crunch of metal into one of the remaining shadows while it was distracted with trying to aim at the other boy.
He expected the shadow to shake off the metallic strike like it had Heliolisk’s Quick Attack, but…it did not, likely thanks to the other boy making it’s attention elsewhere than defending at that point. It was like hitting a watermelon with a sledgehammer, and the resulting disgusting mess of black goop made him shudder: but now was not a good time to be distracted, as the remaining shadows split up - one slightly larger one heading for himself, the scientist, while the other two remained near the boy in green.
" If you’re going to help with this awful group of…Grimer look-a-likes…I’m not just going to let you fight alone! Allez, I’ll assist as best I can! You try and deal with those two, okay?"
However, the bigger shadow did not seem to want to wait, lunging forward and catching Clemont on the arm before he could pull away as fast as he might have liked - oh ouch, that had hurt - he was sure he was bleeding now, and it only proved how serious this was. This wasn’t like an ordinary Pokemon battle - these shadows were out for blood here.
The question of why the attack had hurt when he was ‘dead’ could come later, as the Aipom arm shoved the larger shadow back and gave him a chance to yank his arm away before it got lunged at moreso. He just hoped the other boy could deal with those other two alright, meanwhile…he grabbed Heliolisk’s Pokeball, despite wincing at the pain this caused.
So he was helping! Looking at the other person did cause Link to hesitate. He had strange contraptions protruding out of what looked like his back! It looked like it was made out of the same material as his blade, but it sure didn't move like a sword. Actually, Link was almost worried he'd been possessed by one of the shadows, but it was clear the boy in blue knew what he was doing.
Link didn't say a word, but he did nod to show his appreciation and understanding. This would be easier, now that the larger one had stumbled off! Within moments the two shadows had closed in on Link.
As he did a rather impressive backflip, he pulled out his boomerang. Taking less than a second to aim, he whipped it at such an angle that it hit both of his targets. They weren't knocked out yet, though! He unsheathed his sword again and used his shield to bash the, what Link assumed was, the head of one of his shadows. He was lucky he'd done that actually, because it coughed up a few rather weak flames right into the shield. So they were more than just creepy, brute strength!
The other shadow got the drop on Link, slashing at his left - his dominant - shoulder. He let out a small grunt in pain, but promptly did a spin attack. It hit both the shadows, but only took out one of them.
Usually, Link would be able to tell how many hits it would take until he would kick the bucket (again...?) but he had no idea, and that was more terrifying than the shadow creatures themselves. In his slight panic, he remembered he wasn't alone in this. He glanced at the other fighter and noticed he was injured too. He winced in sympathy. Link turned back towards his remaining shadow, just in time to be able to see the other pull a... ball of some-sort out.
Assuming it was a bomb, Link checked to make sure he was a safe distance away, and went back to hacking away at the shadow. He grit his teeth throughout the pain, but he knew he was getting close. Link accomplished another backflip and then, finally raising his voice past his usual grunts, jumped into the air. He grabbed the hilt of his Hero's Blade with both arms and forced it full power through the shadow.
Link almost allowed himself to collapse in exhaustion and a small hint of pain, but he wasn't about to leave the other hanging. He spun around, ready to help if need be!
Woops? (av open/intro)
His suspicions of the place were starting to grow by the moment, even if it was rather foolish - the fact more than one person couldn’t recall the moment of their death, the how’s or why’s? The odd look in the eyes of the apparent ‘long time’ living people here, and their unsettling smiles: yet, Clemont and his Heliolisk did not get the chance to try and sit down with such information for long, because as he pottered down the old streets into more familiar, ‘modern’ like buildings, something he’d spotted out the corner of his eye made him stop cold. Why had it seemed like he had two shadows, for a moment there…? Non, that was impossible!
Shaking his head, the young inventor attempted to continue walking, but Heliolisk’s frill suddenly opened to it’s full size, the lizard hissing in clear threat. Whoa, what was up with his Pokemon all of a sudden? A yelp emitted from the boy as his lizard almost bowled him over by running behind him, dashing at…the second shadow….what? What? That didn’t make sense, why were there two - and yet, when Heliolisk struck it, the shadow actually flew backwards…was it some kind of Dark-type that hadn’t been discovered?
However, Heliolisk’s Quick Attack was not enough to keep it down, and as it rose, Clemont became aware of more shadows lurching forth. There were…counting the one Heliolisk had attacked - about six there. The lizard Pokemon hissed again, beginning to crackle with static electricity all over: but Clemont felt like six against one would be an unwinnable fight, and he wasn’t going to put his Pokemon in danger!
"M-mon dieu…Heliolisk, return, quick!” Recalling the Pokemon to it’s Pokeball before he could try and take on all the shadows at once, the boy tore away as fast as his legs could carry him…oh, no, but with the heavy mechanical backpack he had on, running so long was tiring. He ran and ran as fast as he could, but the shadows were relentless and did not tire, where he did…he felt fairly exhausted already.
He almost bowled into another boy in green as he staggered, kneeling down and trying to catch his breath as the six shadows drew closer.
"R-run away, while you still can…they’re not after you, fellow Monsieur. They’re after me and Heliolisk."
He might have to use the Aipom arm for…violent purposes here, even if he really didn’t want to bash around his invention like that…let alone make Heliolisk get involved in a six on one battle like this.
But what he wanted least of all was for another person to get dragged into this mess, and he really hoped the fellow boy in green would listen and get out of here while he could…if things went sour, he didn’t want that other guy getting hurt as well, because that’d be awful.
This place was stranger than any island Link had been to before. The hero was used to village people who didn't exactly help out much, but this was a bit over the top... Not to mention Link's pretty sure he's dead, which would be impossible. It was times like this he wished he still had the guidance of his talking boat. He would always have some sort of tip to give.
For the first time Link truly felt alone. He didn't like that feeling. It wasn't long, however, until the loneliness was replaced by a feeling of surprise after being run into.
The stranger was clearly out frazzled by something, so Link allowed himself to listen instead of being angry. He did notice the kid was similar to his own age. Actually, they looked somewhat similar, but maybe it was that they shared a mop of brilliant blonde hair.
Run away..? Link almost scoffed, he wasn't about to run! He was a hero and surly this stranger (and whatever a Heliolisk was) needed some saving! The sound of a sword being removed from its sheathe rang throughout their clearing.
Link shot the blonde a courageous smile and ran right toward the small group of shadows. His sword slide through the shadows, almost making the hero think it caused no damage, but one out of the six burst into smoke. He almost allowed himself to get hit as he watched the remains congeal and disappear. His shield flew up just in time to knock the attacker away.
It wasn't as if Link was having much difficulty, but five on one was never an easy situation. The hero rolled and dodged almost as much as he struck with his sword. Soon there were four left. He paused, giving himself a much needed gulp of hair. As he did so, he glanced at the blonde stranger, hoping he was far enough to remain safe from the shadows and his blade...
Woops? (av open/intro)
It was an intense battle, Link could recognize that, but he wasn't going to lose. He'd already grown so much on his (technically finished) journey, there was no way he was going to get defeated by this weak enemy that was standing in his way of creating a new future! Sure, he was getting a little low on hearts.... A-And maybe he forgot to fill up on fairies..... Link wasn't going to run, though. That wouldn't be very courageous. Courage was basically the young child's middle name! He was the defeater of the great evil that plagued the Great Sea! He had to fulfill a certain wish, and nothing was going to stand in his wa--
.... Aaaah, that was a nice nap. Despite the strange and heavy feeling upon waking up, Link felt very rested. The last time he'd slept like that was before he even had the Hero's Clothes.... Now, where was he? He was sailing the ocean with his pirate friends. Right. He was a true hero. Right. Something stopped them. Right. And he whooped butt.... Wait, no... his was the butt that got whooped?
............... What?
The young hero's eyes widened and he whipped his neck around, only to find he was in a very unfamiliar area. He checked his possessions and it was easy to notice a few things were missing. Most notably the Wind Waker... He rubbed his eyes - no use getting emotional! What he had to do was find his bearings, and maybe find out where he was!
He'd run to the nearest person, a normal looking lady and asked a bunch of questions. However, when he informed the lady that he was certain he died, his only response was a smile. He was frustrated, but being the kind hero he was he smiled and thanked her nonetheless. At least he knew where he was (but a sign had already told him that)....
"Asphodel..... Valley.... I hope it's near the Great Sea......." Surely there would be a map somewhere...
