HAPPY HAPPY - birthday pancakes made by my son
IT'S HERE: THE BIG 5-0
I am running so behind in sharing updates on my adventures ā I have been busy checking things off my list J Letās start with the BIG 5-0 ā yes, it is now official, but itās just a number. And life goes onā¦. Last year, end of July 2014, my surroundings and life were so vastly different, as you all know by now. Literally on my bāday, my mom collapsed in my arms, as I was attempting to move her into the wheel chair, to go for a stroll. Her eyes rolled up, heart stopped beating, the aide called CODE BLUE, and within 5 seconds or so, the hospital room was occupied by over a dozen medical professionals. They tried to escort me out, and I defiantly pushed my way towards the huge window, and perched myself on the sill, shifting as necessary to be able to see my momās face. Mom was listless, lifeless, eyes closed. They did resuscitate her, and soon mom opened her eyes. And she was seeking me out ā her eyes were searching the room, her head was moving. And then our glances metā¦. While by then mom lost her ability to speak and communicate, for the few glorious moments after resuscitation, her eyes were clear and bright, her glance sharp, focused and coherent. I could almost imagine that in a moment sheād grin and wink at me, as if to say āhey, itās all okā. I met with my therapist soon thereafter, as I did when a new crisis would explode in my path. Yes, I was in the midst of āwoe meā, disbelief, and almost defeat. She very calmly, but convincingly, suggested I write myself a birthday letter ā from the (then) present me to the future me, to open and read on my 50th birthday. It was such a bizarre concept to me, to write a letter to myself. But I sat down, and did it. This is what it said: ************************* July 30, 2014 HAPPY BIG 5-0 girlfriend! I hope this letter finds you in a satisfying, content, happy place in your life. As I am writing this to you on your 49th bāday, as a therapy assignment, I will take a bold look forward, to predict what the next year holds. This was the most poignant inspirational note for you: SOMETIMES WHEN THINGS ARE FALLING APART THEY ACTUALLY MAY BE FALLING INTO PLACE First, I hope the pain of momās terminal illness and consequences has dulled a little bit. It is a trauma few have the stamina to witness, and deal with. You have persevered in many ways, when others would crumble. Now that it is behind you, you deserve to acknowledge the strength and determination you exhibited during that painful time. Second, the frustration, anxiety, and irritation of divorce hopefully is also in the past. To have faced and dealt with the blows and burdens of such two life-altering events simultaneouslyā¦.. while I was there going through it with you, I still cannot find the words to express my admiration of your strength, balance, humility and perseverance. It was painful, it was such a profound sense of loss, fear, uncertainty. But the backbone, the determination to get through the awful life changesā¦. Well done, GF! By now the kids are each a year older, each a year wiser. They, too, have been affected by the painful changes of the last year. But they are resilient, they are strong, confident and capable adults: and even though at times it seems they are distant, disconnected, in your heart and soul you know they are always with you, and they do value and appreciate you. I also expect you have made some noticeable and valuable strides in your new job ā happy almost 1st anniversary, by the way! This was the right move to make, at a time when everything else was coming apart at the seams, you found the drive and will to take on another significant challenge, which was a blessing in disguise. On your āpersonalā front, I hope you are living it up, GF ā still meeting new people, still expanding your horizons, still living life. You are not the one to shrivel up and hide in the corner: you are full of zest, energy and life! I hope you took those dance lessons, I hope you traveled to new places, I hope you flirted outrageously and laughed laughed laughed a lot. I love you, I respect you, I support you, I AM YOU and I AM HAPPY WITH WHO AND WHERE I AM TODAY. **************** It was simply amazing to read this letter from a year ago. I was shooting in the dark when I was writing. And yet, so much of it, written ahead of its time, is true here and now. My biggest take-away from that therapy assignment, and my heartfelt suggestion to all who feel lost, defeated and hopeless at times, is to do exactly that ā write your future self a note, a letter, a postcard⦠what we write, gets planted in our brain; whatās in our brain becomes a thought, an action, an event, a change, an evolution. Iām in a better place, Iām 50, Iām revved up, energized and determined to work on my list ā and most importantly, ENJOYING the experiences. My best to you allā¦

DATING 25 YEARS SINCE
In the āold daysā, dating was, essentially, confined to high school and college classmates, friends of friends, friends of the family, perhaps coworkers, and, for the more progressive ones, personal ads in newspapers.
Nowadays, itās all gone high tech ā numerous dating sites, with various objectives and presumed common interests [from religion, to age, to just the good-old-animal-instinct of āgetting it onā, a la Tinder ā why not, if it ātickles your pickleā?]. You really need to sift through the riff-raff to find more authentic people you want to chat with, and perhaps meet. And when you do meet, you hope that their form actually matches their photos ā for godās sake, guys, whatās the point of posting pix from 5 years ago, lying about your appearance, your āstatusā, your life?
But there are exceptions ā gents, who have or are going through challenges, who can be open, authentic, who are intelligent and funny, who are not presumptuous, condescending or insincere, and who want an open, honest connection and friend. I love meeting new people! I love hearing different points of view, looking at an issue or a topic through an alternative filter, learning about their cultures, trying new things. And, of course, there are many interesting stories accumulated over a year, some of which provide comic relief in hindsight ā and sometimes, right on the spot.
An exciting date biking at the shore with āthe Presidentā ā got the gear, the helmets, the speed bikes: only to discover his rear tire is flat. He changed the inner tube, and off we went, cruising down the road, parallel to the beach. Less than a mile from the house, the same tube blew, and we hightailed it back to the garage. No more spares⦠a quick hop to the nearest bike shop, a couple of new tubes in hand⦠another fix, and attempt number three! Third time is the charm, itās said. Not in this case. About half hour and many miles away from the home base, the same tire blew again, and in the avalanche of most selected expletives, the calm āPresidentā had to admit defeatā¦
An evening of sexy, steamy flirting and dancing with āthe CEOā at a club ā getting down, enjoying the good time, each otherās companyā¦. Only to bump into an earlier date of mine! How utterly poorly-timed, and unexpected. We āfaded awayā over a month earlier, and to run into each other at the same club, in a big city.. what are the chances! We hugged, introduced our respective dates, and kept partying. And, yes, he did call to ask about āthe guyā, and wanting to get together⦠Still working on that. LOL
First date ā lunch at a respectable restaurant. The āFive Alarmā and I met in the parking lot, and, literally, the moment I got out of my car, I involuntarily inhaled: the height, the pecks, the guns, the magnetic white smile! I hoped I wasnāt swaying walking in ā but he did have his arm around my waist before we entered the establishment. The attraction, the electricity, the tension between us were obvious probably to all diners. The game of footsie started before the water glasses arrived. The food was barely relevant. I did not recall feeling like this since high school!! It was crazy, delicious, made me lightheaded. It was good we were separated by a table. Plans were made to get together very soon thereafter. The ābye byeā in the parking lot turned into a lengthy, steamy, boiling hot [yet controlled] make-out kissing session, with hands roaming, hair being pulled, in full view of the restaurant, and passing cars. Wow ā people in their 40ās do this? Damn, this is HOT! I like it! Unfortunately, he turned out to be married ā yes, the unknowns of on-line dating. A flash in the pan! But what a sizzling flash it wasā¦
Weeks of intense texting, talking, flirting with āthe PhDā. Finding time to meet was challenging, due to our travel schedules, and to our fiery personalities: on two occasions, weād get caught up in some silly {hindsight} disagreement, and break the dates. Then circle back to each other. It was clear the pull, the attraction were there. On a spur of a moment, to preclude any discord from ruining another attempt at a date, I called as I was driving home from the airport, returning from a business trip, to see if he wanted to have a drink. He readily accepted, and soon, we were conversing at a happy hour. About 90 minutes thereafter, we were saying pleasant good-byeās near my car. And a few hours later, past 11 pm, we were in a Dunkinā Donuts parking lot, kissing and necking like teenagers! Wow ā Richard Gere personified⦠Eye candy galore⦠Hot stuff to the nth degree⦠This promised to be one very enjoyable summer⦠Except he accepted a government cabinet post and relocated. Sighā¦
āThe Capānā whisked me away to the shore, for a desperately-needed relaxing weekend of beach, biking, fine dining, and absolute relaxation. Late one night, I wanted to go for a beach stroll, listen to the crushing waves, be enveloped by the fresh, salty air. Soon we came upon the life guard tower and the row boat ā we started making noises, just in case there was anyone hiding inside the boat, to avoid any awkward situations, but found the boat empty. Such well-behaved community! I wanted to climb to the top of the tower, and we perched ourselves on the hard seat. It was perfect! The cool breeze, the moon reflecting in the ocean, the flickering town lights in the distance, the abundance of stars in the sky. It just created a very romantic atmosphere. And soon the idyllic setting was interrupted by the bright lights of the security jeep, heading straight for āourā tower. I betcha as the car approached, the beach patrol guys inside were already preparing a speech for the disorderly teens they were planning to find ā only to be caught off guard when they realized that the two people they were talking to were actually older than they! There were very polite āsirā and āmaāamā, āsorry to inconvenienceā, āunfortunately, the beach is closedā, āno rush, take your timeā. It was hysterical! When was the last time I broke the rules? Stayed at a place past its closing time? Had to remember a curfew?
And the last, most unusual experience Iāll share is with āThe Esquireā. Weāve enjoyed chatting, texting, long conversations over delicious, leisurely dinners, live music, etc ā just a lot of fun in each otherās company. And then I got the oddest text ā advising me that some of my SMS have landed on his soon-to-be-ex-wifeās cell! Oh, man! It was so shocking, so unexpected, that I literally burst out laughing! I quickly scanned the most recent texts, found nothing to worry about ā but the nagging sensation would not disappear. Having been through the circumstance of āanother womanā coming into my life, I definitely did not want to inadvertently step into those shoes, or be perceived as the home-wrecker. So our next face-to-face was kicked off with a very serious discussion of who stands where, whatās going on, and such. Granted, he moved out a long time before I ever bleeped on the radar, but itās always best to have a peace of mind. I saw the pain, the devastation my BFF went through when her ex hooked up with a chick a number of years ago; I personally experienced the hurt and the misery of same. So, again, not the role I wish to play.
Well, itās been a fun, wild, unpredictable ride, dating after 23 years or marriageā¦. Itās tremendously different from what I remembered, but Iām adjusting, Iām adapting, Iām enjoying, Iām appreciating the differences!!!
And Iām acutely aware of how drastically altered my reactions are: Iām not as easily impressed or blown away, but itās the simpler, kinder things that do impress me. Itās not about the overpriced dinners, itās not about āsteady datingā, itās not about flashy behavior. Itās about sincerity, being human, accepting and ups and downs of life, and remembering that there is a reason why there are 31 flavors of ice cream ā we all do not need to be similar, like same things, feel obligated to conform. On contrary ā now IS THE TIME to try new experiences, challenge your old notions, open your eyes, find joy and beauty in simplicity and kindness.
LOVE THE LIFE YOU LIVE LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE
LIBERTY... FREEDOM... INDEPENDENCE...
Yesterday was July 4th... America's birthday. The day to celebrate the freedom of our country. Independence day. I hosted a BBQ lunch for my dad and my parents' dearest & closest friends. After the meal, we all agreed it would be nice to see my son's bar mitzvah video, from eight years ago. Just to acknowledge the time elapsed since that monumental event was a challenge - how significantly, how severely life has changed since that "simcha", that celebration held in the company of the immediate and extended family, the closest friends, and the innocent children. Of course that life milestone was celebrated in the style of the Russian Jewish community - it wasn't exactly over-the-top, but it was show-off'y (hey, I can call a spade a spade: hind site is 20/20). We were running over budget, and were bickering if we needed the photo AND the video, AND the studio photo session services. I am so grateful we did them all because now, almost a year since my mom's passing, I heard her voice, clearly, distinctly, undistorted by time and unaffected by my memory. There she was, healthy, vibrant, beautiful, young - just turned 61 that year: smiling, dancing, celebrating, LIVING! There was my kids' then-90-year-old great-grandmother, who just passed earlier this winter; there was a cousin's husband, who died from a heard-attack at a bit past 50; there were two other "older" family & friends members, who, alas, are no longer among us. There was my kids' paternal grandmother, still in good health, strong, dancing the hora, standing independent and firm on her feet.... No cancer or walkers in sight. And there was my immediate family on film - the nucleus of 4: the parents, the daughter and the Bar Mitzvah son. Joyous, loving, happy, celebratory, immersed in the festivities, laughing, enjoying, dancing. Of course, the video camera caught many warm and meaningful family moment: lighting the candles on the cake as a family, the mother-son and the father-daughter dances, the embraces, kisses and congratulations exchanged with relatives and dearest friends. But it also captured the unexpected, somewhat intimate moments between the parents of the Bar Mitzvah boy - the close, sexy dancing; the deep, warm, personal glances between the two; the stolen kisses; the "come hither" flirtation. The powerful and obvious love and warmth in the eyes and on the face of the husband, the easy and genuine smiles and laughter of both parents. I was watching the video as the mother of the then-Bar Mitzvah boy, and as a present detached observer. And suddenly, I had an "eureka" moment!!............ A summer ago, mid-July 2014, the rare histology and the aggressive cancer left my mom in a coma with continuing deterioration of her cognitive abilities. I vividly recall the precise moment, late one evening in the hospital, as i was brushing my teeth before bedtime, when I realized that my mom, as I had known her for 48 years, was gone... forever... never to return again... and that the person lying in the hospital bed was, sadly, only a shell, a body, a figment of the woman, of the individual my mom was. The realization was so powerful, so profound, that I stepped out of the bathroom (as the saliva & toothpaste were dripping from my mouth) into the hospital room, where my daughter was sitting close to my mom's bedside, and shared my newfound comprehension. It was like a lightning bolt struck me then. ...............and it struck me again, as I was watching the Bar Mitzvah video yesterday............... The handsome, young, loving, happy, caring, jovial man, who was my husband, friend, lover, partner, champion and supporter for 20 years, is gone... dead... THAT man could NEVER do what the entity that is occupying his body now is doing. That man's intellect, breed, self-respect and family values would never allow the behavior and decisions the current persona is exhibiting. This realization, this awakening was so shocking and powerful, that it liberated me!! Liberated, because once you comprehend & accept that someone is gone, irretrievably departed, never to exist again in the form, person and character (s)he was before, you can move on. You grieve, you mourn, but you move on. You live. I will no longer wonder what, why, how. I know the who and the when. That man is dead. He died in March 2014. And yesterday, July 4, 2015, was the day I became liberated from questioning and wondering. Freed from chasing answers which don't exist. My very own Independence Day.
AGEISM
How do we develop the concept of an acceptable age difference in couples? How do we establish our own ācomfort zoneā? This has always been a very sensitive issue for me. Am I an AGEIST?? For centuries, it was the acceptable societal norm where men were years and decades older than their wives. Having been born and having spent my childhood and ātweenā years on the other side of the pond, my exposure to the age difference was always of the school of thought that the man must be older: heāll be wiser, more experienced in life, a better provider, protector, āmentorā. Those were the primary qualities and characteristics that were discussed as the sought-after traits of a husband. The relatives and adults in my childhood were all couples where the man was at least 1-2 years older than his āsignificant otherā. My mom was 11 [eleven!] years younger than my dad ā and in my life across the pond, I recall vividly mom saying that she felt as if she lived behind a brick wall, protected, sheltered and taken care of. Fast forward to late 1980ās ā dating for me always centered around the guyās age: he had to be 2-3 years older [aside from other physical traits I preferred] . Occasionally, Iād venture into the waters of +5, but I would mostly feel like I was being viewed as immature. So I stuck with the 2-3 year-difference concept. Imagine my absolute shock, disbelief and dismay when I found out this one cute, tall, funny guy, who really liked me, followed me everywhere, seemed to hang on my every word & move, was 5.5 years younger than I! Long story short, heās the ex. Though, credit given where credit is due ā my own mom commented soon after the wedding that I was acting younger, was being less serious, was laughing more. He was mature for his age. And, as the years went on, and more and more frequently I heard that I looked younger than he, my age paradigm was shifting. However, truth be told, deep in the recesses of my mind, there was always an awareness that with the years and decades passing, the potential of the break-up grew. Aside from the typical life, family and marriage issues and challenges we all face, the constant and growing barrage of youth in print, movies, on line, and all possible media, combined with the maleās basic instinct to continuously procreate, is bound to reach a breaking point. The latter, preprogrammed into the maleās genes and brain, steers him to seek out females who are old enough to spawn but young enough to care for the off-springs for a number of years to come. Immediate exhibits for your consideration: my BFFās ex, the ex of yours truly, and my own male cousin across the pond, whose second wife is almost 15 years younger than he, and has borne him three more children. In addition, we all have seen āsecond familiesā, where the father, significantly older than the wife, is playing with his young children, temporarily sidestepping the reality that he will be the āgrandpa-lookingā mid-sixties father at his childās college graduation. Zoom to 2015 ā Iāve been on the dating scene for about a year. And, obviously, find myself facing the age variance topic: only now it has a totally different dimension to it ā societal paradigms have shifted, generational lines are more blurred than ever, minds are more casual [even nonchalant] towards the question of age. I find that the drawn age lines and āstandardsā I ponder are created by me! Some dating experts say +/- 10 is the typical spread; others calculate some crazy āhalf-your-age-plus-7ā & āsubtract-7-multiply-by-2ā rule [are we in the middle ages?] But the majority of dating advice says there are no age rules to the love game: and āthe gameā may consist of a casual affair, a sexual fantasy, falling in love, engaging in a committed relationship, or getting married. The most fascinating fact I discovered for myself [made more compelling by a published research paper] is that depending on the āgameā Iām interested in, my sense of acceptable age varianceā¦. Wait for itā¦. VARIES!!! I felt very comfortable dating a man in his 50s ā he met all my āneeds and criteriaā physically, mentally, emotionally. But I was not looking for a long-term, committed relationship [way too soon!!]. Wish I met him in about 2 years from now. I feel quite at ease flirting and going out with people in their forties ā they have the life experience, the energy, the interests, the objectives similar to mine. I feel flattered when mid-to-late 30s compliment and wish to engage with me, some quite persistently but still gentlemanly. Perhaps I should indulge in a fantasy!! :-) I will continue to cringe and wince every time a 20-something sends an incorrectly-perceived-in-his-mind-sexy-note ā kids these days just donāt take the time to read and donāt pay attention to the details. No cougars or sugar-mamas here. And I will continue to challenge my age notions, my paradigms of the acceptable {in my head} difference between partners: because the love, desire, understanding, attention, appreciation, tenderness, compatibility, fulfillment, and, yes, happiness, two people have for and offer to each other should not be limited by numbers. href=āhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/meet-catch-and-keep/201405/who-is-too-young-or-too-old-you-dateā>for the curious minds
