“Four out of ten,” you say, casually flipping the page of your textbook without looking up.
Riki stops dead in his tracks, his arms still loosely wrapped around your shoulders from behind the couch. He blinks, his dark eyes narrowing as he processes the absolute audacity of your words.
“Excuse me?” His voice has that annoying, raspy quality to it that vibrates right against your shoulder blade. “Four? I’m literally six-foot-plus of pure muscle, and I smell like your favourite perfume. That was at least an eight.”
“Points deducted because...” you counter, tapping your pen against your chin thoughtfully. “You leaned too much of your weight on me. Plus, your chin poked my head. Try harder next time, Nishimura.”
In reality, your heart is currently pounding so hard. Riki’s hugs are, unfortunately, God’s gift to humanity. He always radiates this so much heat, and his oversized hoodies always smell like a mix of clean linen and scent of the vanilla lip balm he steals from you. It’s a miracle you haven't dissolved into a puddle on the hardwood floor.
But you would rather jump into a frozen lake than admit that to him. The boy already has an ego the size of Seoul; giving him a perfect score on day one would ruin all the fun.
Riki scoffs, letting go of you completely and stepping back. He crosses his arms, a petulant pout settling on his lips. “Fine. You want to be meam? Just wait.”
The second attempt happens three days later, and it’s entirely unprovoked.
You’re standing at the kitchen counter, aggressively trying to stab open a stubborn plastic seal on a container of strawberries. Suddenly, a pair of long, lean arms wrap firmly around your waist from behind, lifting you completely off your feet for a terrifying half-second before setting you back down.
Riki buries his face into the crook of your neck, his damp, post-shower hair cold against your skin. He holds you tight, trapping your arms against your sides, completely immobilizing you. It’s heavy and solid and makes your stomach do a weird, fluttering flip that leaves you slightly breathless.
“Well?” he murmurs, his lips brushing against your collarbone as he speaks.
You swallow hard, staring blindly at the strawberries. “Five point five.”
Riki groans loudly, dropping his forehead against your shoulder. “Are you kidding me? I held you perfectly! No poking, no leaning!”
“Too aggressive,” you lie smoothly, your voice miraculously steady. “I felt like I was being tackled by a bear. A hug should be an embrace, Riki.”
He pulls away, glaring down at you with a look of frustration. His cheeks are dusted with a faint, pink flush—whether from the heat of the shower or genuine annoyance, you can’t tell, but it’s dangerously cute.
“You’re doing this on purpose,” he accuses, pointing a finger at you. “My hugs are flawless. Everyone says so.”
“Oh? Everyone?” You arch an eyebrow, leaning back against the counter. “Who is everyone?”
Riki opens his mouth to argue, shuts it, and huffs, turning on his heel to stomp back toward the living room. “Next time,” he calls out over his shoulder, “I’m breaking the scale.”
By Friday night, riki is on a mission. You’re curled up on the edge of the sofa, wrapped in a blanket, shivering slightly.
Riki shifts beside you. Without a word, he reaches out, grabs the edge of your blanket, and pulls you toward him.
You don’t even have time to protest before you’re dragged right into his lap.
This time, there’s no teasing. No competitive smirk. Riki unfolds his long legs, tucking you securely between them so your back is pressed against his chest. He wraps his large hands around your middle, pulling you back until there is absolutely no space left between the two of you. He rests his chin gently on your shoulder, his breath warm against your ear, and just... holds you.
It’s completely engulfing. He feels like a human shield against the cold, his chest rising and falling in a calming rhythm against your back. One of his hands moves slightly, his fingers tracing mindless circles over your covered hip, a soothing gesture that makes your entire body go heavy with comfort.
The trashy rom-com plays on the TV, but your world has narrowed down entirely to the overwhelming warmth of him. You let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding, leaning your head back against his chest, completely defeated.
“So,” Riki whispers after a long silence, his voice dropping into that quiet register that always makes your heart skip. “What’s the verdict?”
You stare at the TV screen, your face burning in the dim light. You want to say a two. You want to say a zero, just to see his face. But his fingers are still tracing those lazy circles on your hip, and he's so warm, and you really, really don't want him to let go.
“Nine,” you mumble softly.
Riki pauses. You can feel the sudden shift in his posture, the way his chest puffs out slightly. “Only a nine? What missing element could possibly keep me from a ten?”
You turn your head just enough to look at him, your nose brushing against his cheek. His eyes are wide and searching, completely devoid of his usual bratty arrogance. He just looks incredibly soft.
“You haven’t squeezed me yet,” you whisper.
A slow, breathless smile breaks across Riki’s face, his dimples peeking out in the shadows. “Easy fix.”
He tightens his arms, burying his face into the side of your neck, squeezing you so close that you can feel the rapid, synchronized thumping of his heart against yours. It’s perfect. It’s a total ten, but as you close your eyes and let yourself melt into him, you decide you’ll make him work for that final point for just a little bit longer.
