it was times like these when siobhan should forget her pride and get a damn map of the town rather than wander around aimlessly. there were of course the easy places to spot, the university for one, but some smaller places she was lost in finding, and nothing in her bag could help with that and her feet were hurting from the hours of walking around. her main focus currently on her guide to the mysteries of sheffield were the cemeteries, all six of them. of course she had to start somewhere, which is why she found herself questioning a younger girl. “so which of the six cemeteries would you say is the most haunted?”

she’d been minding her own business ━ something common for the blonde. a trip home from church had the girl walking through the center of town, and stopped by someone who, clearly, was new to town. ❛ i wouldn’t say any of them. ❜ her voice is quiet, but the skepticism is there. heather isn’t a huge believer in the spook and hauntedness of sheffield ; likely a direct result of her father’s influence. ❛ sorry ━ i don’t believe in ghosts. ❜

jamie !

there’s a lump in his throat and it thickens with his sister’s words. they used to be so close, back home, when everything was so DIFFERENT, normal almost. but he’s grown up ever since and jamie’s grown out of who he used to be. he misses her ; often, but the more he looks at heather the more he’s reminded of how much he failed as a brother. how he could’ve protected her. but didn’t. ❝ but you didn’t. sometimes things happen. you know that , right? ❞ jamie questions and it’s sincere. ❝ i still hear her voice, sometimes. you know what? screw what he says. wanna hang out for the day? get away? ❞

she misses jamie. of course she misses him ━ he’s her big brother. he used to protect her ; of course, that hasn’t happened in a few years, so she should be used to it by now. but somewhere in her subconscious she keeps hoping he’ll be back. ❛ yeah, i know .... ❜ she trails off, letting empty words hang in the air ━ because he believes them, but she doesn’t. she silently hopes he doesn’t notice the pause. ❛ i ━ yeah !! of course i do. ❜  she’s momentarily taken aback by his offer, unprepared for it. but she welcomes it ━ an opportunity to see and spend time with her brother.

nervous fingers pick away at hangnails, and heather finds herself regretting coming to benny’s. she looks at her watch ━ an old, thin leather strap with a beaten face attached. she hasn’t eaten since yesterday afternoon, so she knows she needs to get something, but the guilt of being late is beginning to chew on her insides. she notices a waiter headed her way ━ only a few years older her, and semi-recognizable. she gnaws nervously on her lip, then tries to relax as he approaches her. ❛ ━ hi. can i get a lemonade ?? ❜ she knows SUGAR probably isn’t what she needs right now, but hey, it’s her own money. spare pocket change and a handful bills ; she might as well treat herself before she goes to meet her father at the church.

and suddenly motions stop, gaze dropping with his sister’s confession. he CAN’T help her because he’s, in a way, a coward. he’d fight for her, more than for most people, but is a fight worth it if it ends up in total destruction? jamie’s tone drops and the change is noticable.  ❝ yeah, me too. ❞ he’s calm now and everything about previous words vanishes.  ❝ he probably doesn’t talk about her a lot, does he. i ‘dunno. just seems like you’d be happier back home. you got any new friends? boyfriend? ❞

she notices the sudden shift in jamie, and his change of tone, paired with his mirroring wish, forces a wave of guilt to wash over her. she practically snorts at his statement. ❛ the only time he talks about her is when he’s yelling at me for killing her. ❜ she says it lightly, but the meaning of the words sting like a cut. she blames herself as much as her father does ━ knows that he’s right, that it is her fault. but she loves her brother too much to tell him; or even let it show. ❛ maybe. ❜ a pause. ❛ no. i mean, i rarely leave the house besides studying or school, so i don’t really have ... time for that. and things with dad would be so much worse if there was a BOY involved. ❜

    ❝ i didn’t —- mean it like that, c’mon. and you know. it’s just, why would you wanna stay here? go back home. maybe i’ll come with you. you’re lookin’ a little pale lately, arizona sun would do no harm. the point is: far, far away from dad and this creepy waiting room for all kinds of things.  ❞

she hates feeling like she’s bothering someone ━ especially jamie. her hands clench, and she feels her words choked in her throat. ❛ that’s how it felt, jamie. and what’s the point of going home ?? all my friends have probably forgotten me anyways. ━ dad would know that’s where i’d go, anyways. ❜ she sighs, a heavy weight pushing on her shoulders. ❛ ━ i wish mom were here. ❜ she says it quietly, half hoping he won’t hear.

    ❝ —- and move in with me? no way. no discussion at all. you need to . . leave town, get into a good college. you’re a smart kid heather, what’s keeping you in sheffield? you can do so much better. ❞

❛ i mean, i wasn’t saying that i’d move in with you ━ but thanks for essentially telling me you wouldn’t want me to live with you anyways. ━ what’s holding me here, jamie, is my family. you. ❜

     “ it’d be under ‘ K ’ if we have it. ” bucket snaps his gum, taking the vcr tape from the girl before him. “ babette’s feast. what kinda weird-ass movie is this ? ”

❛ oh, okay ━ i’ll look there, i guess. ❜ she nods, releasing the tape into his hands. ❛ it’s, um ━ it’s religious. not very good, i don’t recommend it. ❜
