I wish I could put music on a post like insta does
Just watched Project Hail Mary for the 5th time. I desperately need Ryan Gosling and Matt Damon to do a bit at an awards show since they both have big movies this year. Andy Weir stranded both of them in space afterall.
shout out to the iron lung and project hail mary for finding ways to add a red and green color palette without making it look christmasy
BloodyMary + Simon’s mischaracterization
This has been said a lot across multiple platforms and I can’t tag everyone, but I need to talk about the way Simon has been mischaracterized because of BloodyMary. I have a lot to say, bear with me here.
Prefacing this with why I think Simon has been mischaracterized so badly:
I know most of the problem comes from people in the fandom who haven’t engaged in the source material. I see SO many fics tagged with ‘author has not watched Iron Lung’.
I think the biggest issue is that PHM has a much larger fanbase; it’s had a fandom since 2021, the movie was in most cinemas for months, and it had millions of dollars worth of advertising. On top of that, it’s relatively easy to pirate, whereas Iron Lung hasn’t been until very recently. There have been edits since the day it premiered, Ryan fucking Gosling is in it. My point is that it’s a far more mainstream piece of media, and because of that, most of the BloodyMary writers/fanartists come from the PHM fandom first.
(Please don’t pirate Iron Lung, or any indie films)
Iron Lung, on the other hand, showed almost exclusively in requested theaters, for a few weeks at most, and then came to YouTube in May. It’s had virtually no advertising aside from Mark himself, less edits/art/fan content etc, and it’s also a genre that is less appealing to a wider audience.
(I came from the Iron Lung side and was very late to PHM, so I was around for the early tumblr/ao3 characterization of Simon.)
All that to say I GET IT. I get that most people have come from the PHM side, haven’t had access to Iron Lung to characterize Simon properly, and wanted to write fics etc.
But please. I beg you. Simon’s character development is so insanely important to the dynamic he would have with Grace. He’s not stupid or incapable or blindly violent and I’m SICK of people making him useless. There’s a lot ableism and racism (Simon, of Korean descent, worshipping Grace, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed white man, for instance) in too many fics, but that’s another whole conversation.
I can pull up receipts for some of this for better examples, and I will because I feel like I need to.
Simon’s intelligence:
Simon is treated like he’s stupid in the movie. The C.O.I. There’s multiple times where Ava and David repeat themselves like he might be confused.
[ “Are you sure it was a skeleton?” Ava to Simon ]
We then almost immediately see him mapping the blood ocean from the inside of the SM-13. No lights, no window, no equipment and no outside help. He manages a fairly accurate map of his surroundings, some of which he expands with X-rays from places he isn’t even in anymore.
Violence/The Butcher:
Yes, Simon has a history of violence. He’s absolutely far from being innocent HOWEVER! It was him doing what he was asked. Religion is an insanely easy way to manipulate vulnerable people, and Simon was, up until a point, indoctrinated by Eden. In a flashback we see him as a child, standing over a pile of bodies with blood on his hands. There’s no scenario in which he’s not innocent, but there’s a lot more to the situation surrounding it.
In the movie, he lashes out more in fear than in a genuine attempt to hurt. The camera, he even admits is him acting out of fear, and he regrets it. He apologizes repeatedly for it. Ava sent him down there and he still apologizes. He apologizes to the sub when he hits the control panel. He yells and then looks guilty every time.
[ “I’m sorry, about the radiation. I didn’t know.” - Simon to Ava ]
When he does act with intentional violence, it’s towards the eel, when he realizes he’s dying and the blackbox needs to make it to the surface.
Whilst I do think he would initially lash out towards Grace, he would also immediately back off when he realizes that Grace isn’t an active threat. He would be insanely wary, he’s trapped in another unfamiliar situation that he’s not in control of and has no method of escape from.
Simon and the Hail Mary:
There’s a whole ton of fics where Simon isn’t able to operate in Mary: can’t handle zero gravity, couldn’t pilot, etc.
Simon who comes from a civilization that moved off earth before Grace was even born?? He’s lived on Mars and then on Eden and at least one other space station before the events of Iron Lung. He knows space and space travel. Is the Hail Mary what he’s used to? No, but its basic functions are essentially the same. Mary’s controls are supposed to be intuitive, and Simon piloted and restarted the SM-13 using pretty much ONLY his intuition, he hardly looked at the manuals.
Rocky would be a shock, the state of the pre-quiet rapture universe would be a shock, the amount of resources available to Grace would be a shock.
Simon calling Grace ‘Angel’:
Simon was part of a cult. He’s deeply distrustful of religious and authority figures, having had a bad relationship with both. Both of those things are very important to Simon’s character development.
[ “Let’s not get into that. I hear enough of that kind of talk on Eden.” - Simon when asked by Elli if he believes in God ]
He argues about it with David earlier on in the film.
The point is, Simon’s relationship with religion is inherently negative. Even The Light/The Portal is made to look like an angel [ Molly Brown/Deadlymelodic, the concept artist for the movie describes it here ].
I don’t think Simon would want to associate Grace with something that has caused him that much damage. Would he call Grace an angel in a pain med induced state when he first wakes up on the Hail Mary? Maybe, but I don’t think it’s something he’d continue, and if he did, I think that it would be sarcastically.
Simon constantly tries getting a reaction from people. He spends a lot of time in the movie arguing and talking back to Ava, David and then Elli, baiting them into replying or admitting what they’re doing to him. Yes, he’s scared and remorseful, but he’s also sarcastic.
[ “Sure, things are somehow faster when I don’t know what I’m doing.” Simon to David ]
Grace, a scientist, the least religious person possible for Simon to meet in any scenario, would absolutely have a reaction to being called an angel. It’s more likely to be discomfort than anything else, especially if he understands Simon’s relationship with religion.
There’s no way in hell that Simon would become blindly devoted to Grace. There’s a very clear power dynamic in the “Grace-saves-Simon” scenario and Simon would be very aware of it.
Anyways, that’s most of what I have to say in the shortest possible format. Full disclaimer I love bloodymary, and I consume a LOT of content related to it. I swear I’m not coming at this from the perspective of a hater.
I don’t normally engage in fandom discourse but I’ve been lurking on this for weeks now and I wanted to say something.
I’m obsessed with the idea of the Eridians having a public holiday called something like “Savior’s Day” on the day that the Hail Mary landed on Erid
Everyone has the day off from work/school and pebbles look forward to the parades and parties thrown in Grace and Rocky’s honor
And maybe there’s things they “watch” or grilling-out adjacent activities families do to celebrate
(and Rocky and Grace hate it because they have to make appearances to like the whole planet and they’re not egotistical enough to enjoy it)
HELLOOO I came to say thank you for writing rootbound its genuinely amazing!! And my question to you is:
What are Simon's and graces favorite flowers? (specifically flowrs not plants) becouse im a sucker for flower language and I want to see if it fits
(Also im not sure if Simon's favorite flower was stated in the fic, im re reading it rn becouse i realised that I forgot a couple of things that happend )
Thank YOU for reading it!! As for favorite flowers, I don't have one in particular for either of them, but a couple ideas come to mind for me!
For Ryland, I think he naturally gravitates towards sunshine-y, warm yellow flowers. If a kid asked, he'd probably say sunflowers (no I am not projecting onto him... much), because of how neat they are (the florets and the spirals!!) and their cheer. I also think he sees them and sees himself a little: tall, bright, unmistakably there. He struggles with feeling like he takes up too much space (physically, sure, but emotionally), so maybe he's told himself to stand tall, to be more like them (something he'd never admit to anyone, but I think Simon would make similar connections if he learned Ryland liked them.)
Forget-me-nots are also up there for him. He loves their color, a shade of blue so rarely found in nature that he finds it fascinating (he IS a science teacher afterall!) In a lot of ways, they’re the opposite of sunflowers. Sunflowers are tall, warm, and impossible to miss; forget-me-nots grow low to the ground and can disappear into everything around them until enough bloom together to turn the whole space blue. I think Ryland sees himself in both. The sunflowers are the part of him that stands at the front of a classroom and fills the space, while the forget-me-nots are the quieter part that only really makes sense through all the people and memories he carries with him. I think they also make him think of his parents. Maybe his mother’s field guides have plenty of them drawn in, and there are pressed flowers in frames that his grandparents held onto for him. And while Ryland can’t remember his parents for himself, he also can’t ever forget them. He carries them with him in everything he does.
I also think he likes yellow carnations as something kinda ruffled and messy looking, long-lasting, and cheery without being too in your face. He doesn't care that they're "ordinary" or "boring". I like to think carnations were the kind of flower he got his Gram when he and his grandpa went to the grocery store, so he has some nostalgia for them there. I know the meaning of yellow carnations and I think it makes it that much more sad though. (For anyone who doesn't know, they tend to symbolize rejection and disappointment.) For Ryland to pick a flower that symbolizes some of his greatest fears, it just fits too well.
(Simon, who has maybe read up on flower language during quiet hours at the shop, hears that they’re one of Ryland’s favorites and makes the connection on his own. He isn’t huge on flower language, purely because he cares more about how flowers make someone feel than what some long-dead Victorian decided they meant. Still, he doesn’t want to give Ryland yellow carnations at first. Even if Ryland is unaware of their traditional meaning, offering him any suggestion of rejection (especially after hearing the way Ryland speaks to himself) is exactly what Simon wants to avoid. Eventually, he does give them to him, because to Ryland, they don’t mean rejection. They mean Gram’s kitchen table. They mean something ruffled and ordinary and long-lasting. They mean messy and bright, just like him.)
For Simon, he’s a bit tougher to me. I think he’d probably like your everyday chrysanthemum. There are so many different varieties (some very neat and compact, some a little weird and spidery), and I think he’d enjoy that they’re sturdy and long-lasting without looking boring. People do tend to treat mums like generic grocery store flowers, but Simon absolutely does not care about a flower being “ordinary.” Call them boring and Simon will quietly decide you don’t know enough about flowers to have opinions. They’re reliable, more complicated than they look, so... kinda like him!
Calendula also keeps coming to mind, though I’m not sure it would be his actual favorite, so much as a flower that feels like him. They’re warm and kind of sunlike, especially the dark orange and rust ones, but they can symbolize grief, sorrow, and remembrance. They’re also associated with healing and protection, which gives them this whole "hurt and healing can exist in the same place" thing that I really love for Simon. The healing doesn’t undo the hurt; they just become parts of the same flower. Calendula is also hardy and useful instead of only decorative, so I think he’d approve of it on principle. There are other reasons this one fits him especially well, but those are none of your business yet <3
I also think Simon has a much softer favorite that he’s less likely to admit to: sweet peas. His mom grew them, and I think he associates them with helping her tie the vines up and finding little jars of them around the house. They’re ruffled and delicate and almost aggressively romantic, which does not seem very Simon at first (he is well aware of who he is, you don't have to point it out), but I think that’s why they fit the part of him we haven’t seen much of yet. They also don’t last especially long once they’re cut. He can grow the same varieties his mom did and recognize the scent immediately, but he still can’t make them stay. Anyway, Simon is doing great and I have no further comments at this time lol
Sorry if I took away some of the flower language fun from you, but I couldn't help it!!
goodbye world!
Edmond Dantès hearing the sound of another prisoner digging after years of solitary confinement and immediately starting to dig too in order to befriend that person has the exact energy of Rocky the Eridian seeing another ship after decades alone in space and immediately trying to make contact.
yknow in fairness to grace the last time we sent a school teacher to space it didnt end well
Thank you to @fancycake for their hilarious idea that I had to draw
Rocky just likes being included.
Been awhile since I've done one of these huh
i think about grace’s students a lot. can you imagine the funny guy who taught your high school science class who disappeared one day and never showed up to school again turning out to be a major part of the literal project saving ur planet
I feel like Dr. Lokken would hate Tom Ryder, not because he's problematic (although that's part of it) but literally just genuine undescribed gargantuan incomprehensible abhorrence to HIM specifically.
Later she found out that the Dr. Ryland "I-don't-swear + as sweet as sugar" Grace also hates Tom Ryder. She doesn't question why because she's more focused on the fact that she can finally bitch Ryder's name with a fellow hater in the Vat after a long time away from the internet
Stratt doesn't know what to feel that bitch talking an actor would be the solution for Grace and Lokken to get along, but if it works then it works.
Stratt also collectivley ignores the vague comments from Grace that implies that he personally knows Tom Ryder. Unless things escalates, this is not her problem and keeps the teapot to herself.
Friends of tumblr I have need of your aid
I request that you share all your favorite Project Hail Mary fics. The hyperfixation is strong
I can start, I'll recommend only Project Hail Mary fics because I don't know if bloodymary or starstuck are something you want to read about xp All of them I read and all of them I loved. Some are finished, some not yet. 1. "The Astrobiology Immersion Program" https://archiveofourown.org/works/82728511/chapters/217793801
Summary: It's not every day you wake up with five arms and no eyes, but Ryland Grace stopped having normal days a very long time ago.
2. "Saving Grace" https://archiveofourown.org/works/55999603/chapters/142221274
Project Hail Mary from Rocky's perspective and as his notes.
3. "Discordant" https://archiveofourown.org/works/81555066/chapters/214469656
Summary: In Grace's opinion, dreaming about time traveling is no excuse for getting out of practice with his Eridian. To the rest of the Petrova Taskforce, it seems a bit odd that their resident Astrophage expert has suddenly taken to carrying a keyboard around and playing it whenever he speaks. Eva Stratt resolves to figure out what is going on.
4. "A Second First Contact" https://archiveofourown.org/works/86606821/chapters/229188086
Summary: Sixteen years have passed since Grace arrived on Erid and a new ship has been spotted in the 40 Eridani system, not from Erid and not from Earth. When Grace finds himself an interstellar ambassador between the Eridians and these new aliens, uncomfortable questions arise about whether Grace could ever really be considered Eridian, and whether he might be happier somewhere else…
5. "Equilibrium" https://archiveofourown.org/works/82704591/chapters/217727866
Summary: On their way back to Erid, Rocky and Grace discover a mysterious box. Upon opening it, the two discover some strange changes. Well, perhaps way more than strange. Rocky finds a new marking on his arm similar to Grace's scar, and Grace finds markings similar to Rocky's on his arms and legs. Rocky begins to dream and can easily wake from sleep, and Grace can stay up for much longer than a normal human should. Grace starts seeing sound when it's too dark to properly see, and Rocky starts seeing pops of colour in his sound vision. Neither can understand what's happening to them and how they're seemingly linked together, but they know there's nothing in the world that could tear them apart.
6. "going nuclear" https://archiveofourown.org/works/88247511
Summary: Grace gets kidnapped by a terrorist cult, Stratt goes on a very polite rampage, several world leaders are harrassed, two bedrooms are forcefully entered, ilyukhina's vodka is commandeered and Grace finally gets a hug (feat. the Vat being a family, Vattling shenanigans, Stratt's wardrobe choices and Grace having self esteem issues)
7. "Deliver us from evil" https://archiveofourown.org/works/85599371
Summary: Grace doesn't consider himself much of an athlete, but he's no slouch either. And he's got the physical prowess of his whole species to represent! The xenobiology team, on the other hand, is horrified to learn what a 'persistence hunter' is.
I read only this story but author has a whole series so it may be worth to check out.
8. "Couple of Hometown Heroes" - okay, this is a crossover but it is cross with "The Martian" and I just had to include it. https://archiveofourown.org/works/84127116/chapters/221828291
Summary: Mindy Park is rapidly realising that the first intelligent extraterrestrial to make contact with the human race thinks they’re fucking stupid. She’s pretty sure that Dr Grace isn’t accurately translating half the things Rocky is saying, but most of what he is telling her is that Rocky has a better way of doing what NASA wants them to do, and honestly, it seems like Rocky is mostly right. She probably doesn’t want to know what the other half of what Grace’s new alien friend is saying, if the things that are making it through what she’s calling the “middle school teacher filter” are “why would you do something the dumb way when you could do it the right way”.
I think for now it is enough from me.
Five Nights at Project Hail Mary
+ a short comic of after the photoshoot :9
*context: this is a continuation (?) of the original photoshoot i drew. some people suggested drew him in the golden freddy pose haha (as seen below)
