THE BUTCHER / THE BUTCHERED
hey don't cry. blorbo coughing up blood
Hihi it's me, still thinking abt TNBM au and Courtland and all of them. You mentioned how the CIA are still still trying to get Courtland back to be their agent and I'm wondering how does that affect like his ability to accept and act *normal*?
Like I imagine everyone's mostly settled down atp and their having a game night but it's one of those worse days and Courtland is very on edge and vigilant cause what if they do try to take someone he cares abt again? Clearly coercion is smth they're not concerned abt. Or what is someone he still has bad blood with tries to attack now that Courtland has finally settled. Just look at how badly things went when his only connection has Fitz and Claire. Now he has *so much* to lose and he doesn't know if he'd even be able to take it and he's lowkey spiraling when suddenly a loud crash happens just outside the apartment. A car crash most likely but Courtland is alr up and checking windows and the perimeters and its methodical and precise and hey when tf did he grab a knife. Everyone else is just watching him go full battle stance and Claire is also getting up to try to talk to him but Ryland and colt glance at each other as they both feel like they've just watched their older brother disappear and this soldier, to put it likely, just took his place.
Courtland eventually snaps out of it but when he looks back at the table he's met with the stares of his brothers and Simon, a mixture of concern, pity, and even fear on their faces and he hatess that they saw him like that, saw him act like the killer he was, and he just wants to lock himself in a room where no one can see him but instead just resorts to sliding down to the floor with his head between his knees and hands on the back of his neck, a grace family staple. He's lowkey spiraling with thoughts that he'll never be able to live a life without danger and attacks at every turn and he can't just be normal for the people he cares abt and he robs them of the chance at a simple life.
Claire is able to get him to finally respond but only after she calls him Six when countless "Courtland!"s didn't seem to get through. And Courtland hates that too. That Six is who he subconsciously truly views himself as, someone who's meant to kill, to harm. They're able to get everything calmed down eventually but being trained to be a weapon your whole life doesn't just go away after one night. And sure it's not the MOST common situation, calming down your older brother who also happens to be the best ghost agent for the CIA, but since when has anything been normal around the Grace's? And that's how Claire finally manages to get Courtland into therapy.
(Sorry for the long ask again! I just love this au sm I know I've said it before BUT ILL KEEP SAYING IT TY FOR MAKING IT)
Oooh no, I love all of this.
Like, of course Court slips back into Six on bad days. He tries not to. Jesus Christ he tries so hard, because he doesn't want to be Six anymore. But at the same time, how could he not? It was all he knew for so long. It was all he was told to be. And sometimes he's too tired to fight it. Sometimes it's just easier. Claire is good at coaxing him out of it. Ryland and Colt have quickly learned how to pull him back to them, because god forbid they're gonna let their older brother go again. And you know. I think, maybe, there are some days where Court gets so deep into it that the only one who understands it enough to bring him back out of it is Simon.
Bc, you know.
Being raised in a death cult is remarkably similar to being recruited and used as a shadow operative by the government. Especially when you had so much of your identity ripped away, when they made sure you had nothing left except to be this thing they've made you to be.
Like Sierra Six.
Like The Butcher.

the coltlandgentry siblings are back at it
I will probably get through this just like I have gotten through everything before but I need to be really stressed and scared first
Here's how I can still have a bloodymary fake dating au.
Ryland visits Colt on set sometimes, and lately he's been visiting a lot more because Jody's working on a sci-fi/horror film and she's asked him to consult on some of the science because she wants it to be As Accurate As Possible. Ryland loves teaching science! Of course he's happy to help!
Except. You know. This also has the unintended side effect of Ryland seeing Tom Ryder a lot.
Tom Ryder is...fine.
Kind of.
He flirts with Ryland a lot, which, whatever. Ryland brushes it off. But now he's starting asking Ryland out on dates, and it doesn't matter how many times Ryland says no, Tom Ryder just Won't Drop It. So Ryland tells him he has a boyfriend, actually. Simon. They've been friends for a while now, they spend a lot of time together, they call each other a couple nights a week, so Ryland doesn't really think much of it when he says Simon's name. And it's not like Simon ever has to know. Ryland is sure this won't ever come up again, especially since, well. Tom Ryder doesn't seem like he really believes him, but he does drop it. Sort of. He keeps flirting, but he's stopped asking Ryland out at least.
Yay!
A win win situation!
Ryland's little white lie worked!
But then they finish filming the movie.
And Jody invites Ryland to the premier.
Ryland says yes, of course he'll go. He wouldn't miss it for the world. And when Tom Ryder very snidely asks if Ryland will be bringing Simon with him Ryland says "he should be back from his dive by then, so probably." And Ryland doesn't quite register his words for a second. Doesn't totally comprehend what just came out of his mouth.
But then Ryland realizes what he said.
Oh shoot dang it.
I started writing it. Happy pride month or whatever.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
For the TNBM AU, do you have any plans for the Earth crew? ie. Carl, Yao, Ilyukhina, Dubois, Shapiro, the other scientists, etc?
•I think Ilyukhina is another saturation diver who works with Simon a lot, and she becomes fast friends with both Simon and Ryland, much to their confusion (they don't remember becoming friends with her, it just sort of Happened).
•...you know what Yao gets to be one of the superintendents at Ryland's school. He's retired military but he's not an ass about it. He also was the one who took over Ryland's class for a bit when Simon had The Accident.
•Dubois and Shapiro are old collage friends of Ryland's. They meet up every once in a while for drinks. They were also at Simon and Ryland's wedding, and boy were they excited for Ryland for managing to pull someone like *Simon* (what's that supposed to mean? Ryland asks, ready to be offended. He's hot Shapiro answers, like it's obvious. Ryland...can't decided if he should be offended or not. Simon can't stop laughing).
•Carl, I think, still works with Stratt. He and Ryland meet up to gossip once a week. He keeps Ryland and Simon updated on the Eva/Ava debacle.
Heeeeey guess what? It's Simon's Mom's Angsty Backstory Time :)
•Simon's mother came to Eden and the commune when she was around 5-6 months pregnant with him. His father was never in the picture, and his mother was scared and desperate for any place to go where she could safely give birth and raise Simon.
•Eden and The Father welcomed her with open arms, offered her a place to stay, and with nowhere else to go she took them up on their offer.
•At first things were...normal.
•Simon's mother was never particularly religious, and while she never actually converted to Eden's brand of religion, she went along to sermons and church services and participated in holidays and celebrations and rituals. She was being allowed to stay here for free, so it seemed only right to her to follow along with Eden's customs and daily life.
•the people in Eden were so excited when Simon was born, and when The Father asked to baptize him his mother was...she was hesitant, but ultimately agreed. She didn't see the harm in it.
•Simon was baptized in the creek that flows right beside The Last Tree (foreshadowing is a literary device in which--)
•things were still normal after that, but it didn't last very long
•once Simon started waking, The Father would take him for hours at a time, and Simon's mother wasn't allowed to go with them
•the people of Eden, who had once been so welcoming towards her, started to grow cold and distant. Not with Simon, no. Everyone adored Simon. But his mother was starting to become an annoyance. Another mouth to feed, as The Father would say, in a commune that was already lacking in food.
•The Father kept taking Simon away from her for longer and longer stretches of time until she barely saw him at all. She knew it wasn't right, that something was wrong, but she didn't know what to do. She didn't have the means to leave. The Father had made sure of that.
•she learns over the years more about The Last Tree. How it's cared for and fertilized. She sees the bodies. She knows not just anyone can butcher them. She knows only those The Father deems as pure and good can touch the soil of the tree. She knows this. She knows all of this. But she still can't leave. God knows she wants to. God knows she wants to take Simon and run, but she can't. She has no money. No identification. No means to make it on her own. No nothing. But she's willing to ignore it. Because there's food here. She had a roof over her head. She can keep Simon safe and healthy and alive here. That's all that matters to her.
•it was not until Simon came home to her one night, his hands covered blood, that his mother realized what was happening.
•she knew she couldn't provide for her son. It broke her heart, but she knew that.
•still, she bundles him in her arms and runs, consequences be damned, and sings him one last song before leaving him in the care of a stranger.
•she only hopes that one day Simon can forgive her, but she wouldn't blame him if he never did.
•she hopes, one day, that she can come back for him, but she knows that hope is only a pipe dream at best.
May I offer more text posts on this fine Monday morning?
