One thing I love about studying math is that when you ask any fellow student or prof why they went into math we all say it’s because we find it beautiful. It’s so diametrically opposed to the opinion that everyone else has about math that it feels like some kind of virus that infects you and makes you unable to study anything else

I recently found my “gold” hammer after misplacing it. It’s my favorite tool ever because it looks like a regular hammer trying to be fancy,

but then you twist both halves and unscrew it to find a flat-head screwdriver in the middle.

I have one of these and I keep it in my IT toolkit because that teeny little screwdriver is the right side for laptop casings, but because it lives inside a large object it’s harder to misplace than a standard tiny screwdriver. Also because the look on a client’s face when you bring out a brass hammer to fix their laptop is absolutely wild.

Even in the open air Dean can smell arousal, mortified to discover that it’s not just Castiel’s. Turning to sit properly in his seat, Dean stares at the grass below him, trying to ground himself. He can’t let Castiel’s affection go any further. If he gets too close, Cas will see every last one of Dean’s flaws and run the other way. Cas can probably already smell that there’s something different about him. He’d rather have Castiel as a friend than not at all. 

The two men sit side by side awkwardly, looking ahead as they try to navigate this tension between them. Dean clears his throat a couple of times before being the first to speak. 

“Listen, Cas,” he starts, gentle as he can so that it softens the blow. He still can’t look Castiel in the eye. “I’m not…I’m not relationship material at the moment. I come with so much emotional baggage you’d need a train for it all. I’m a mess right now, and it wouldn’t be fair of me to embroil you in that.” 

Beside him, he can see Cas nod his understanding. 

“Thank you for being forthright with me, Dean. I appreciate your candor.” He also speaks softly, casting a spell that aches in Dean’s chest, one that will break if they are too loud. 

The silence between them is less awkward now, so they sit quietly until Castiel’s phone begins to buzz the alarm on their laundry. The spell is broken, and now they’re just two aging men with creaking knees doing menial chores. Together. 

As they walk down the hallway bickering about whose joints are worse, Dean realizes that no matter what he does, he’s going to end up in love with this man. It’s a heady thing, and he doesn’t know just what to do with it.
