❛⠀you fancy yourself a knight ? ❜ the words taste bitter on her tongue as it is amused. not that brienne finds her efforts non-commendable — if she does, than she may be no different than the men who have long insulted her strength and deny her her place within them simply for the lack of a cock between her legs. no. it isn't that she does not find the notion inspiring, but she supposes, in a way, it feels as though she has the privilege for once of not being on the other side, begging to be believed.

the amusement, here, is more from disbelief than to mock. she thinks, faintly, of all the women she'd come across who does prefer a dagger than silk gown. sometimes both. but the world is a tightly-held fist, and sooner or later, they all must choose their fate. at present, brienne's eyes track the other down. she notes the lack of badge; the empty symbol of allegiance on her person. subtly, the maiden of tarth takes a wider stance. ❛⠀or a swellsword ? speak, and be true. ❜

To happen upon another was to be expected — Vi knew better than to believe that she could slip about the Seven Kingdoms undetected. She kept to the roads, a looted sword at her hip, hood up and head down, doing her best not to react to the snide remarks of passersby. This woman, however — unusually tall, donning armor, and carrying a sword upon her hip — manages to surprise the young woman of Flea Bottom. The women of Westeros don't typically carry swords at their side or wear armor . . . they typically frolic about in outrageous gowns, their cheeks red as they gossip amongst themselves, dutifully fucking their husbands and bearing their children. That is, if the birthing bed does not claim their life, first.

Vi knows naught what this armored woman wants with her, and though she is much more adept with her fists than a blade, she fingers the pommel of her sword, prepared to cross steel should it come to it. ❝ Does it matter? ❞ Whatever she may say — knight, sellsword, wanderer . . . it would be just another excuse for this woman to cut her down. ❝ I'm a survivor. Nothing more. ❞ She raises her scarred brow. ❝ You a knight? Gonna kill me where I stand to appease your lord? Keep the roads outside his keep safe? ❞

A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR . . . an asoiaf alternate universe verse.

Born to Felicia, a barmaid, and Connol, a miner, Vi was raised on the streets of Flea Bottom as a wide-eyed girl with an unwavering love for her little sister, Powder. When Felicia and Connol are killed by men of the City Watch, Vi and Powder are taken in by family friend, Vander, owner of The Last Drop, the tavern in which Felicia worked. He works hard to raise the girls as though they were his own, and eventually takes in two more orphaned children, Mylo and Claggor, who Vi sees as her younger brothers. A skilled fighter in his day, Vander teaches Vi how to use her fists, but encourages her to use them only to protect those she loves, rather than to inflict pain that isn't deserved.

As the years pass, Vi and her younger siblings do what they can to survive the harsh realities of the world. They pickpocket and loot those they can amongst the more noble-born folk of King's Landing, selling their wares to whomever can give them the highest price without turning them into the City Watch. But, after a job gone wrong, and Vi preparing to turn herself in once the City Watch begins sniffing around, Vander, instead, takes the fall, much to Vi's disapproval. It is when he is preparing to leave that he and the two Gold Cloaks he is with are attacked by Vander's former friend, Silco, who captures Vander. Vi and her brothers plot to break Vander free of his captor, while, unbeknownst to them, Powder is preparing to defy her sister's orders and assist them in their efforts.

An explosive detonates, killing Mylo and Claggor in the process. Vander, though injured from a stab wound inflicted by Silco, takes Vi in his arms and manages to escape through a window, though the jump costs him his life. Vi, having witnessed her family die, discovers Powder and berates her for her actions, despite the young girl pleading that she only wished to help. As she storms off in anger, leaving her younger sister amidst the ruins, Silco seizes the opportunity to take Powder under his wing. Just before Vi can call out to her sister and attempt to protect her, she is knocked out by one of the surviving Gold Cloaks that was seen with Vander.

She wakes on a ship, shackled in the dark, heading for Essos, having been sold to slavers. Due to the fight she manages to put up, the slavers decide to make her their prize fighter, utilizing her fighting prowess to make them money in the fighting pits. For seven years, Vi fights in the pits, making a name for herself, even marking her body with tattoos to commemorate her wins. Not a single day goes by, however, where she does not think of escaping and finding her sister.

Eventually, she is freed of slavery, and returns to Westeros, seeking out Silco and any trace of Powder that remains.

In longing, you feel heavy. Your desire feels like a burden you've been carrying for too long. Your heart is a large weight in your chest, so heavy it brings down your shoulders and puts a bend in your back. You feel like if you were thrown into water, the weight of it would drag you straight to the bottom. It's as if no matter what you do, you just can't shake it or let it go. When you let yourself feel it, it's almost suffocating, you're drowning in desire, quietly. You unfocus your eyes and breathe out until the stream of air thins, a pang in your chest follows. The next breath is a sigh. You've been so patient, you feel you deserve something. Your yearning pulls and pulls at you but you've tried everything, nothing left to do but wait. Once you've accepted this, you push the thoughts away, but the weight is still there. Sometimes you convince yourself you don't even want what you desire anymore, you just want the weight lifted. But something says don't give up. You're too deep in love. Be strong my dear, stay determined.

After her release from Stillwater, Vi begins to struggle with her mental health and her relationship with alcohol. While the general unease is present throughout the events of seasons one and two, she does not experience panic attacks or dissociation until after the events of the series. No longer is she fighting to find her sister or to bring her back to the person she once was; no longer is she using her fists, day in and day out, to get her point across or to solve a problem. For the first time in her life, she is free, she is safe, she no longer goes without . . . It is much easier for her to fall into depressive episodes, now, with her thoughts no longer racing a mile a minute, always planning her next move. This, in turn, allows her traumas to present themselves fully, as she is no longer forcing herself to put on a brave face or play the role of the invincible older sister. She experiences recurring nightmares, typically replaying Jinx's 'death' within the hexgate, even after the theory that her sister faked her death presents itself. At times, she also experiences nightmares of her time in Stillwater — primarily the beatings from the guards, the degradation, and the countless hours spent in solitary. Whenever these nightmares jolt her awake, she either stares at the ceiling, struggling to catch her breath, or wanders the halls of the Kiramman estate, planting her ass in a plush chair within the library, a stiff drink dangling from her hand.

Her relationship with alcohol is . . . complicated. While she no longer drinks herself into a stupor each night, she does have her slip-ups. She makes a conscious effort to turn down alcohol whenever it is offered, but, when things are especially hard or when she is alone with her thoughts, she'll seek out the bottle, be it something cheap and readily available in Zaun, or a finger of expensive whiskey that Tobias keeps on a table in the library or sitting room. She has only gotten drunk a handful of times following the battle with Noxus, leading to terrible hangovers and a guilty conscious the following day.

It is only after everything that Vi discovers a fear of enclosed spaces (e.g., elevators, tight corridors, tunnels, cellars, and locked rooms.) Having spent seven years of her life locked away, with a good chunk of time spent in solitary, far underground, small spaces trigger something within her, reminding her of her time in Stillwater, and her lack of freedom. She discovers it one night after a particularly bad nightmare, Tobias's whiskey decanter emptied at Caitlyn's request, having ventured down into the Kiramman manor's wine cellar in search of something to take the edge off. Unfortunately, the door closes behind her, and though she is not locked inside, the closeness of the shelves and restricted space brings Vi back to the cells she'd spent her teenage years within. Suddenly, her chest is tight, her breathing feels restricted, and her heart begins to race as her eyes dart around the cellar for an escape. It's nearly fifteen minutes later that she is discovered by a panicked Caitlyn, curled up in a corner of the room, her back against the cold cellar wall, fists clenched in her lap, eyes staring out but unseeing.

Guilt  rose  within  her  almost  instantaniously  ,  her  shoulders  locking  up  as  she  took  a  tense  breath  ,  she  didn't  mean  to  treat  Vi  this  way  ,  the  person  who  deserved  it  the  absolute  least.  Who  had  sat  by  her  the  entire  time  ,  but  sometime's  Caitlyn  just  wanted  to  pull  away  and  sink  into  her  own  shattered  mind  away  from  prying  eyes.  Her  mind  was  a  dark  place  to  be  ,  had  been  since  Cassandra  died  or  perhaps  even  before  that.  Caitlyn  had  always  found  herself  rather  lonely  ,  suddenly  having  people  fawning  around  her  was  uncharted  territory. 

In  truth  she  was  exhuausted  ,  she  hadn't  actually  be  spared  a  moment  alone  since  she'd  woken  up  after  the  battle  ,  there  was  always  someone  coming  by  to  sit  with  her  ,  no  matter  how  much  she  insisted  she  could  handle  being  alone.  Of  course  Caitlyn  understood  ,  but  she  couldn't  help  her  frustrations  and  feeling  like  she  was  losing  her  own  autonomy.

❝  Vi  ❞ she  sighs  ,  already  feeling  more  temperment  than  the  other  deserved  ,  her  thoughts  best  left  unsaid.  Caitlyn  could  feel  the  defeat  that  laid  there  between  them.  Physically  only  a  few  inches  a  part  but  there  felt  like  a  sudden  wedge  that  she'd  slammed  down.  Not  wanting  the  other  to  retreat  into  her  own  dark  thoughts  ,  Caitlyn  took  in  a  deep  breath  ,  turning  back  towards  Vi. 

Still  so  kind  ,  still  offering  to  help  her  but  oh  how  she  was  so  tired  of  having  to  recieve  help.  ❝  what  I  need  is  to  get  out  of  this  bed  ❞.  Pleading  eye  ,  ❝  I  can't  stare  at  the  same  four  walls  a  moment  longer  ❞.  Surely  Vi  of  all  people  could  understand  that  feeling  ?

She understood better than anyone how it felt to stare at the same four walls day in and day out. Though incredibly luxurious, and far more comfortable than the thick cement walls and iron bars of Stillwater Hold, Caitlyn's bedroom acts as the woman's own personal prison. And though she possesses freedom, was it truly free to be watched closely by so many pairs of prying eyes? She could hardly walk to the bathroom on her own, needing to lean on the sturdy frame of another lest her knee give out beneath her, lest the stitches at her abdomen pull and double her over in pain, lest she bump into the corners of walls and tables, still unused to her lacking depth perception.

It is a silence after Caitlyn's plea that stretches on for far too long. Vi's jaw clenches, fingertips tapping against the mattress on either side of her body. It isn't that she is apprehensive in helping Caitlyn, but that she is uncertain of her place, here, let alone the role she plays. She will stay by Caitlyn's side for as long as she needs, leaving only should the woman demand her to go. But . . . was her presence suffocating her, after everything they had been through? After what Vi had inadvertently subjected her to? There is so much left unsaid, so many wounds still open and oozing blood. She wants to ask more of Maddie, of Ambessa, of who had shared Caitlyn's bed while they were apart. She wants to ask her of her mother, to learn more about the Cassandra that Caitlyn knew, to help her through her grief. She wants to take her in her arms and protect her from harm, something she had been unable to do during the battle with Noxus, though she knows that Caitlyn can take care of herself. It is simply in Vi's nature to protect those she loves . . .

❝ Okay, ❞ she whispers, her answer punching through the silence. Carefully, she swings her legs over the edge of the bed and rises to her feet, the sling meant to cradle her injured arm left hanging from her neck. Bare feet pad along the cool marble flooring as she makes her way around the bed to Caitlyn's side. ❝ You need help getting up? ❞ She knows the answer, but she gives Caitlyn a choice. She will not fight a no, even if it would earn her a scolding from Caitlyn's father, should word reach him. Speaking of which . . . she slips her arm into the sling. Better to not catch flack from Caitlyn or her father over it. ❝ Or your cane? Or . . . you can hold on to my arm? Whatever you wanna do, Cait, I'm game. ❞
