Groaning, you rub your temples as you try to focus on the open English literature book on your desk in front of you. All of your friends decided to attend a local frat party tonight but you decided to stay in and focus on revising for your upcoming test. Your phone vibrates from your bed behind you. You peer over your shoulder and faintly see the name ‘Gray’ followed by a Snapchat notification.
You sigh as you pick up your phone from your bed and unlock your device, opening up the Snapchat app. You scroll through names of people from your class until you see your best friend Grayson’s name. You press on the red square beside his name and see a mirror picture of him and his brother Ethan.
You respond with:
Seconds later you receive a reply from him:
You groan as you stare blankly at your book. You know that none of the information is going into your head tonight. You’ve been cooped away in your dorm for the past few days and it’s time you get out. You send Gray a selfie of you captioned, ‘Fine. Just need to get ready. Gimme an hour.’
You start playing your favourite music playlist from your phone as you race around your room trying to get ready on time for the party. You’re nervous. You know Grayson will be there and he’ll help if you need him but he knows you’ve always been intimidated by Ethan. He;s a notorious bad boy of the school. A complete party animal who always gets into fights with anyone who tries him. Ethan has never said anything to you, but you’d always receive death glares and eyerolls from him whenever he passed you on campus which left you in a constant state of confusion.
You’d always shake it off and pretend you never noticed, but you noticed his snide expressions toward you every time. You never dared to tell Grayson because they’re twin brothers and tell each other everything and knowing how protective Grayson is over you, you didn’t want to start a fight between them. You try to push those thoughts to the back of your mind as you finish getting ready. You twirl around in your bedroom mirror to double-check your makeup, hair and outfit is on point. And as usual, it is.
You turn off your playlist and slip your phone into your pocket as you exit your dorm and strut your way across campus to the frat house where the party is being held. You see Grayson standing by the front door of the house. With Ethan close behind him. Ethan smirks at each girl that passes by him and Grayson is his usual awkward self, nodding at the girls. His face lights up when he sees you approaching.
“y/n!” he waves to you. “Over here!”
As those words leave his mouth, Ethan’s head snaps in the same direction as Grayson’s. His eyes don’t leave your figure as you move closer towards the two boys. You engage in eye-contact with Ethan for a couple of seconds and are shocked when he doesn’t make any kind of grimace at you. You try smiling, but he looks away. You shrug it off and move towards Grayson.
“Hey, Gray.” you smile as you embrace your best friend.
“Hey.” he greets you. He shoots a look towards his twin brother. “Ethan. Anything to say to y/n?”
“Nope.” he smirks before turning his back and strolling into the frat house.
“Sorry about him.” Grayson sighs. “I told him to play nice. He said he would.”
“Don’t worry about it.” you lie. “I’m not even bothered.”
You laugh as your best friend leads you into the party. You smile and wave to those who you recognise from your classes. Grayson keeps his head down to avoid girls throwing themselves at him. Eventually, you’re in the kitchen and you have a drink in hand. After a short while, Grayson has drifted away into the crowds of people and you find yourself standing alone by the kitchen sink.
You feel someone’s presence behind you.
“I don’t think we’ve met.” the voice says in a husky tone.
“I can’t say we-” you turn around and are met by a familiar face. “Have. We have met.”
“Oh.” Ethan stammers awkwardly.
“Hi, Ethan.” you mutter.
“Hi, y/n.” he responds quietly.
“See you around.” you grunt as you push past him to go and find Grayson.
“Whatever.” he shrugs.
You huff through gritted teeth as you roll your eyes at Ethan’s usual sarcasm. You see Grayson on his way out of the party anyway. You dodge past people to reach him. You grab his arm and smirk with raised eyebrows as he turns to face you with red lipstick smeared across his lips.
“Please don’t.” he shakes his head. “It happened so fast I don’t even know what happened.”
“Your secret is safe with me.” you chuckle. “Where are you headed?”
“I have no idea to be honest.” he continues chatting as you both head for the door. “You know what my social anxiety is like. I hate shit like that, I only went cause Ethan wanted to and I would’ve left so much earlier if you weren’t there.”
“I know, I understand.” you link arms with him. “I’m sorry you feel so under pressure around people, but you’re so good at handling it. You’ve been so great at it since high school.”
“What time is it?” Grayson throws his head back as he yawns. You pull out your phone.
“Christ, it’s 4am.” you say as you slip your phone back into your pocket. “I’d better get back to my dorm so I can wake up early enough to do more studying.”
“Okay.” Grayson nods as he pulls his arm out of yours. “Thanks for coming out tonight, y/n. You know how much it means to me. See you on Monday for class. Night.”
“Night, Gray.” you wave to your best friend as he waddles in the opposite direction of you towards his dorm.
You’ve never been happier to see your room. You slide out of your party outfit and get into your favourite pyjamas. You take off your makeup and brush out your hair as you scroll through social media. Once you’re in bed with your teeth brushed and skin moisturised, you see a couple of text messages you missed earlier.
Ethan: Hey y/n, you looked hot tonight.
Ethan: Ignoring me? That’s cute.
Ethan: I’ll make you regret that, baby.
You lock your phone and drop it off the side of your bed in a state of mild shock. What the fuck? Ethan Dolan has never shown any interest in you whatsoever. So why all of a sudden is he sending you flirty messages? It’s all too much for you tonight. You settle into an uneasy sleep soon enough.
“y/n!” your roommate bangs on your door. “It’s 10am, you’ve missed class. Get up, the professor wants to see you!”
“What?” your head shoots up from your pillow and your voice groggily cracks.
“Get up!” your roommate yells. “The professor wants you now!”
“Oh, holy mother of shit fuck.” you mutter. “Okay, I’m just getting ready!”
You topple off of your bed which results in you landing in a heap on the ground entangled in your bedsheets. You scramble onto your feet and jump out of your pyjamas. You throw on a casual outfit while brushing your teeth at the same time. You toss your hair into a ponytail as you kick on your shoes. You forget to bid farewell to your roommate as you fly out the door.
You break into a sprint as you bomb across the campus towards your lecturer’s office. You smile at Grayson as he shoots you a confused glance as you pace past him. You reach your professor’s office and knock a few times. When there’s no answer, you open the door a crack.
“Hello, sir?” you whisper into the room. When there’s still no response, you push the door open further.
“You’ve been a bad girl, haven’t you?” you’re met by the smirk you could never miss.
I appreciate the boys taking their break and showing us that suffer from mental health that it’s okay to take your time. To work on yourself. Because honestly it’s the hardest damn thing sometimes. And loving yourself is extremely hard in today’s society. So smile at someone who seems to be having a bad day, compliment their outfit or hair. I’ve had so many issues growing up my whole life where I have been continuously made fun of for minor things. Something that was so small and minuscule that broke my heart and has damaged me since. I, like many others, struggle everyday to even get out of bed. When my world crashes around me and I feel myself just sinking back into darkness, I know that I always have the boys to make me laugh and smile. I have Alex, who essentially worships the ground I walk on. I have Gidget and Duffy to cuddle me and help me. Not everyday is easy, and I’ve been in that dark place for awhile. I can honestly say I’m feeling much better and am ready to get back to my normal everyday self. And while many of you like me struggle from this always found comfort in the boys, know that while they are in break, you are still not alone. I am here for you! @alexlovesmallory is here for you. We may not be perfect ourselves, but we know what it’s like to be in that place. If you need encouraging messages everyday, I’ll send them, if you just need someone to check in on you, I’m there.
