“My darling?”

She calls into the night. The rain is hitting the window hard and the thunder woke her up. He’s not in the bed.

Alice gets up and wraps a nightgown around herself and she walks through the house to try and find her husband.

She won’t let the storm hurt him.

John sits in the corner of their walk-in closet (a major upgrade from their closet in New York) It was silly, he knew the storm couldn't hurt him, and the likelihood of it actually doing anything was slim to none, but he couldn't help but squeeze his eyes shut tight, covering his ears and rocking a bit.

"Fuhdge, that's loud."

He muttered, keeping himself small. He was fine. Categorically fine. But it was overwhelming, and the sense of dread was... it was a lot.

Alice walks through their room and even she startles at the loud thunderclap.

“Damn.”

She says under her breath as she looks for John. He glances out of the window, it doesn’t look like the storm is going to let up any time soon. She about to head of of their room when she ears a noise come from their walk-in closet.

She makes little heartbroken sound as she slowly opens the door and peers inside.

She spots him, huddled in the corner all arms and legs and yet somehow quite small.

She closes the dome behind them and kneels beside her husband.

“Room for two?”

She says softly and places a hand on his shoulder.

John nods. He relents his hands covering his ears in order to lean his head on Alice's shoulder as she sits down next to him. He tenses again as thunder strikes, and he moves in closer.

"Do... we know when this is gonna let up?"

Alice slides down beside him and wraps her arms around him.

“I can’t say for sure.”

She pulls him closer and allows him to rest his head on her chest.

“I’ll keep you safe, I promise.”

She gently cards her hand through his hair.

He snuggles In. It's very clear how hard this thunderstorm is affecting him as he shakes just a little with every crashing thunder boom. But he definitely relaxes quite a bit when she starts playing with his hair.

"It... it's stupid that I'm still this terrified...."

“No, Darling, no. It’s not stupid. Not stupid at all.”

Alice kisses the crown of his head and continues to hold him closer. She idly plays with his hair to help soothe him, and rubs his arm with her other hand.

She tightens her grip as another thunderclap causes him to flinch.

“John, it’s okay to be scared. You have every right to be scared and I’m not going to think less of you.”

John cuddles closer, attempting to focus on her breathing and heartbeat. He felt bad. He's a grown man. This is such a childish fear...

"I... know. It just... sometimes I feel like you're taking care of me, and I'm... I'm not doing enough."

Thunder claps again, and he buries his face again.

"Fuh-dge. I'm sorry..."

“Only when it comes to the storms. You do so much for me, John. Little things that make my heart melt. You’re there when I need you. When I’ve had a hard day, or when I’m upset. I know I can always find comfort in your arms. Not to mention how you make me smile. How you make me laugh. You brighten my life John. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

She kisses his cheek softly.

“I like being able to help you. I like that you trust me enough to take care of you when you need me.”

Alice lets him get as close as he needs to. She continues to run her hand through his hair.

“I’m here. You’re safe. You’re safe, don’t be sorry. You never have to apologise to me.”

John looks up out of his hiding and honestly becomes so flustered that the next thunder strike makes him jump out of his skin with how distracted he had gotten.

"FUH-"

He stops himself from cursing but holds her closer, and he whimpers just a little in panic.

"I love you"

Her soft eyes look down into his. She smiles encouragingly, letting him know he’s safe. She looks to the closet door when the next clap of thunder hits.

“You can swear, John. You can curse and let it all out. All the pain, all the fear. I won’t mind.”

She counties to hold him. Not once does she laugh. She just holds his trembling body. Alice shifts her position a little so he can get closer still.

“I love you so much.”

hey, alice. um. do you have any advice for someone who feels like they just cant... do it any more? like. it just feels. insurmountable. all the time? you seem really strong and smart and. its really hard right now.

It’s not always easy. Some days can be really hard. Some days I feel like I’m not enough. I feel I can’t truly help my husband when he needs me. I can’t ever take his fear away, and it hurts to see him upset.

But I have to try. And trying counts. Making mistakes counts too, because even when it leaves a pit in your stomach and your head is reeling, it slowly fades. It does get better. And the worry subsides. Because at the end if the day you’ve learned from that, and it can only get better. And it only hurts because you care.

These are all things I have to remember.

Christmas Eve in New York was something Alice hadn’t done for a long time. She was so happy when John had surprised her with two tickets to the Big Apple. Sure it was busy, but she liked it. What made it even more special was spending it with John. They’d landed at JFK a few days before. Having settled into the hotel, all expenses paid, they made their way out onto the cold crisp air. She held onto the crook of John’s arm as they made their way down the steps and onto the busy streets.

This was lovely. The hustle and bustle, the shouting from street corner merchants, the smell from food vendors. It was enough of an experiment as it was, but even better considering she was spending it with her husband. To her, this was all she needed for the holidays. They’d agreed that they weren’t doing gifts this year, that the trip alone would be enough, but she knows what he’s like and he knows her inside out. She smiles to herself as she walks down the street, she can’t wait to see the look on John’s face in the morning when she sneaks the gift under the small tree in their hotel suite.

As they walk Alice looks up at her husband and straightens his scarf. “You do look so handsome in red.” She smiles playfully and links back onto his arm.

John hadn't traveled in a long time, just for the move away from New York, but he drove that. But, with Junior out of the house, off at Uni, it was time for him to face his fears. So he had booked a ticket for New York City and surprised it to Alice and it was wonderful.

The ride, not so much, he was terrified the whole ride to New York, but with Alice, he managed to get through it. And he absolutely adored Alice to let this opportunity go to waste.

When they settled in, he hid away his gifts to Alice, He knew that they said no presents, but he couldn't help himself. Soon, they made their way to the streets, and he made sure the two of them were bundled. The Christmas smells were wafting in the air, the noises all around, but he couldn't help but admire the most beautiful sight, his Wife.

When Alice adjusted his Scarf, he could feel himself blush a bit. "You always look amazing." He barely gets out, too stunned by her beauty, even after all these years. "Where to first?"

He looked to her. He did think about leaning down and picking up a snowball, but that would be too obvious with them linked arm in arm like this.

Alice had barely left John’s side since boarding the plane and landing. It was brave of him to suggest flying in the first place, let alone so close to Christmas. She held his hand the entire time, rubbing calming circles on the back of it with her thumb while she casually watched one of the in flight movies or chatted with him.

“Thank you, Darling.” She said and pulled the blue scarf around her. She loved the cold air of the city. It could be that it was because it was blowing off of the Atlantic, or just because it was deep winter, though she swears it has a climate of its own. A little bit of its own unique New York magic.

The trees may have been bare, but the park wasn’t. he ambled along, taking in the sites, the lights and decorations in certain places.

“Central Park?” She said and wandered down the block with him towards it. It was a big enough area, lots to do and see, even walking around it and maybe getting a hot drink would be enough, though she paused when she saw a Christmas themed horse and carriage ride. She tilted her head and looked over. “What do you think?”

John looked over to the horse and smiled quietly. His eyes squinting gently at the edges as he thinks about the lovely carriage ride with his darling wife. The one they had all those years ago when he first tried impressing her. "Central Park sounds lovely." John did his best not to pay attention to the sounds around them, and all the flashing lights, instead focusing in on how the light bounces naturally off of Alice's wonderful face. When she tilted her head towards the carriage ride he absolutely lit up. "Yes. Please?" He looks back to Alice, making sure that she truly meant to ask.

Alice held his arm around the elbow and subconsciously placed her other hand on it too as they walked along.

Her smile broadened as he lit up and she all but dragged him over to the carriage. She paid the fee and the driver helped them both on board.

“A romantic getaway, huh? I’m gonna make this real special for ya.” He said as he handed John a blanket.

“This is a relaxing short ride in Central Park, then we ride to the world-famous Fifth Avenue shops, passing by Tiffany, Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Hall, and finally Times Square. Sit back and relax I’ll take care of you.”

The driver smiled and played gentle instrumental Christmas music before handing them each a freshly made hot coco.

Alice snuggled into John as the driver set off.

John laid the blanket across the two of them, and it was, well, magical. His hot cocoa in hand as they traversed the streets of New york, the beautiful shops absolutely amazed John. But he couldn't help but stare at Alice more often than anything else.

Especially when the snow started to gently fall and dot her brown hair. He loved how beautiful she looked, and with the snow falling so perfectly, she looked like a queen.

He loved how close they were as well. He gently played with her hair as they went down the well lit streets. "I love you." He muttered, not expecting her to hear or anything, simply just wanting to tell her he loved her.

Alice let out an excited gasp as it started snowing. She glanced in his direction excitedly and curled up to him a little more. This was perfect, everything she could have hoped for and more. The gentle clopping of the hooves, the music, being cuddled up to her handsome husband, it was magical.

The city was a sight to see in all kinds of weather, but something about the snow, made everything so much brighter, bigger and beautiful. The lights glowed evanescently and the dusting of snow looked like powdered sugar. She fully relaxed as John idly played with her silky dark hair, she could sense how content he was; and then she heard him say those three little words.

She turned to see John was already looking at her. Her smile broadened as she looked at him, his eyes twinkled as the lights reflected in them. His handsome features seemed more definedand the tiny smile lines that made him look oh so distinguished. “I love you too.” She said softly and leaned over to peck him on the cheek.

The tour lasted a little while longer, the driver expertly telling them information without ruining any moments they were having. Everything seemed to slot into place. “They say that if you kiss at midnight in Times Square you’ll have good luck!” He said as the carriage passed by it.

Alice glanced at John with a cheeky grin. “Fancy a late night?” She mused as the tour continued on. After all there was lots to do in the city that never sleeps. And the evening was fast approaching as the sun started to set in the late afternoon.

John blushed as he realized his soft mutterings were heard. Not that he hated that. He just wasn't expecting to be heard. He blushed even more when she gave him a peck on the cheek, and he absolutely didn't expect so much to go so right.

The driver did wonderfully, and as he spouted that fun fact about luck, he immediately knew the two of them had to stay up. It was absolutely the most romantic thing they needed to do, and with Alice then recommending a late night, he was in. "With you, I'd do anything." He quietly hummed before kissing the crown of her head. He's ready for a long night.

Alice hummed softly in gentle amusement.

“Red really does suit you.” She said as she looked between his scarf and his now flushed cheeks. She set the empty cup down and linked her arm in John’s elbow and rested her hair upon his shoulder for the duration of the ride.

When the driver stopped back in the park he helped them both down and smiled widely at them both.

“Now you two have a great time ya hear? It was a pleasure having you on my tour.” He nodded at them as they walked off.

Alice looked up at a John as they ambled through the park, the snow gently fell onto his dark hair.

It was beautiful, truly beautiful to be walking around Central Park with the man she loved at this time of year, even though it was busy the Christmas magic was still there. They walked by the lake as the lights slowly shone brighter as it got darker, illuminating it and everything around it.

“What shall we do now? The night is still young if we’re staying up.” She said with a grin.

John leaned into her and simply enjoyed her company until the end of the ride. When they stopped, he made sure to fold up the blanket. As he was helped down, he grinned and held Alice's hand. "Thank you, have a happy holiday, okay?" He didn't wait for a response for the driver, starting to have the two of them Amble before Alice, grinning ear to ear asked her question.

He chuckled before letting go of her really quickly and grabbing a bunch of snow, throwing a small snowball at her shoulder as a response.

Alice tilted her head and raised an eyebrow as she saw the mischievous look in her husband’s eye.

“What are you…?”

Before she could finish the sentence the snowball hit her and she burst out into laughter.

“Oh, I see how it is!” She grinned and bent down to pick up her own bit of snow; hurriedly made it into a ball and gently threw it at his chest.

John chuckled mischievously, the two of them throwing snowballs left and right until they finally got quite a bit cold, and he honestly admitted he was a bit tired. He wouldn't admit it, but he was pretty sure Alice one that battle. when they reconvened, he gently kissed her on the nose and moved her hair out of her face. "I think we should probably warm up a bit now. Do you wanna see if that old coffee shop, we used to go to is still open?"

Alice laughed as they played in the snow, they hadn’t done anything like this for years. She crinkled her nose as he kissed it and hugged him close.

“You know, I think that’s a great idea.” She grabbed his hand and held it tightly as they walked along to try and find the coffee shop.

“I know it’s around here somewhere.” She said as they walked along.

They eventually found it, Alice got into a little booth and pulled John next to her as they could warm up a little.

The waiter came over and took their order.

John shivered a bit, the cold settling in as he realized just how cold it was out there. But he couldn't help but smile, even with the miserable cold, because he was with his darling wife.

Soon, the waiter came back with a steaming latte for John, and Alice's always delicious smelling order as well as some fresh cookies that John had ordered as well. He wrapped his arm around Alice. "I'm... I'm glad we did this."

When they had settled into the booth that’s when Alice noticed just how cold John was as he shivered.

“Oh Darling I didn’t realise how cold you’d gotten!” She moved closer as he wrapped his arm around her and wrapped hers around his middle.

“I’m glad we did this too, it’s been so much fun, if you’re too cold though we can call it a night. I really don’t mind.”

She held his free hand in hers and rubbed her thumb over the back of it. Good luck superstitions be damned, her husband came first.

She looked around the coffee shop as people were minding their own business on this busy and cold Christmas Eve. When she was sure no one was looking she pressed a kiss to his cheek, lingering for just a moment before pulling away. Just long enough for a trickle of warm energy to flow through her and hopefully help to warm her husband up a bit, similar to the effects of coffee, but slightly more direct.

"To be fair, I hadn't even realized I was cold." John cheerfully replies, it was true. He hadn't felt how numb his hands felt or how cold he was in general until he was sat in such a warm environment. "No, no. I refuse to let my body be the ruiner of fun. I just need a moment to warm up here, just for a moment. And then we'll get right back out there."

Right as he finished saying this, Alice snuck a kiss on the cheek, which quite instantly made his cheeks turn red, and he got quite flustered. He tried stuttering out some words, but everything came out gibberish.

Alice giggled despite herself. He was adorable. He was everything and more to her. Every part of him she loved wholeheartedly.

“Take as long as you need, we have all night.” She smiled gently and took a cookie, daintily biting into it as she looked at him through her lashes. There were enough cookies for both of them to have two each, but she was feeling mischievous and something about this magical night spurred her on.

“John, you really should try these, they’re delicious.” She said as she broke it in half and held a piece up for him to try.

John hadn't traveled in a long time, just for the move away from New York, but he drove that. But, with Junior out of the house, off at Uni, it was time for him to face his fears. So he had booked a ticket for New York City and surprised it to Alice and it was wonderful.

The ride, not so much, he was terrified the whole ride to New York, but with Alice, he managed to get through it. And he absolutely adored Alice to let this opportunity go to waste.

When they settled in, he hid away his gifts to Alice, He knew that they said no presents, but he couldn't help himself. Soon, they made their way to the streets, and he made sure the two of them were bundled. The Christmas smells were wafting in the air, the noises all around, but he couldn't help but admire the most beautiful sight, his Wife.

When Alice adjusted his Scarf, he could feel himself blush a bit. "You always look amazing." He barely gets out, too stunned by her beauty, even after all these years. "Where to first?"

He looked to her. He did think about leaning down and picking up a snowball, but that would be too obvious with them linked arm in arm like this.

Alice had barely left John’s side since boarding the plane and landing. It was brave of him to suggest flying in the first place, let alone so close to Christmas. She held his hand the entire time, rubbing calming circles on the back of it with her thumb while she casually watched one of the in flight movies or chatted with him.

“Thank you, Darling.” She said and pulled the blue scarf around her. She loved the cold air of the city. It could be that it was because it was blowing off of the Atlantic, or just because it was deep winter, though she swears it has a climate of its own. A little bit of its own unique New York magic.

The trees may have been bare, but the park wasn’t. he ambled along, taking in the sites, the lights and decorations in certain places.

“Central Park?” She said and wandered down the block with him towards it. It was a big enough area, lots to do and see, even walking around it and maybe getting a hot drink would be enough, though she paused when she saw a Christmas themed horse and carriage ride. She tilted her head and looked over. “What do you think?”

John looked over to the horse and smiled quietly. His eyes squinting gently at the edges as he thinks about the lovely carriage ride with his darling wife. The one they had all those years ago when he first tried impressing her. "Central Park sounds lovely." John did his best not to pay attention to the sounds around them, and all the flashing lights, instead focusing in on how the light bounces naturally off of Alice's wonderful face. When she tilted her head towards the carriage ride he absolutely lit up. "Yes. Please?" He looks back to Alice, making sure that she truly meant to ask.

Alice held his arm around the elbow and subconsciously placed her other hand on it too as they walked along.

Her smile broadened as he lit up and she all but dragged him over to the carriage. She paid the fee and the driver helped them both on board.

“A romantic getaway, huh? I’m gonna make this real special for ya.” He said as he handed John a blanket.

“This is a relaxing short ride in Central Park, then we ride to the world-famous Fifth Avenue shops, passing by Tiffany, Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Hall, and finally Times Square. Sit back and relax I’ll take care of you.”

The driver smiled and played gentle instrumental Christmas music before handing them each a freshly made hot coco.

Alice snuggled into John as the driver set off.

John laid the blanket across the two of them, and it was, well, magical. His hot cocoa in hand as they traversed the streets of New york, the beautiful shops absolutely amazed John. But he couldn't help but stare at Alice more often than anything else.

Especially when the snow started to gently fall and dot her brown hair. He loved how beautiful she looked, and with the snow falling so perfectly, she looked like a queen.

He loved how close they were as well. He gently played with her hair as they went down the well lit streets. "I love you." He muttered, not expecting her to hear or anything, simply just wanting to tell her he loved her.

Alice let out an excited gasp as it started snowing. She glanced in his direction excitedly and curled up to him a little more. This was perfect, everything she could have hoped for and more. The gentle clopping of the hooves, the music, being cuddled up to her handsome husband, it was magical.

The city was a sight to see in all kinds of weather, but something about the snow, made everything so much brighter, bigger and beautiful. The lights glowed evanescently and the dusting of snow looked like powdered sugar. She fully relaxed as John idly played with her silky dark hair, she could sense how content he was; and then she heard him say those three little words.

She turned to see John was already looking at her. Her smile broadened as she looked at him, his eyes twinkled as the lights reflected in them. His handsome features seemed more definedand the tiny smile lines that made him look oh so distinguished. “I love you too.” She said softly and leaned over to peck him on the cheek.

The tour lasted a little while longer, the driver expertly telling them information without ruining any moments they were having. Everything seemed to slot into place. “They say that if you kiss at midnight in Times Square you’ll have good luck!” He said as the carriage passed by it.

Alice glanced at John with a cheeky grin. “Fancy a late night?” She mused as the tour continued on. After all there was lots to do in the city that never sleeps. And the evening was fast approaching as the sun started to set in the late afternoon.

John blushed as he realized his soft mutterings were heard. Not that he hated that. He just wasn't expecting to be heard. He blushed even more when she gave him a peck on the cheek, and he absolutely didn't expect so much to go so right.

The driver did wonderfully, and as he spouted that fun fact about luck, he immediately knew the two of them had to stay up. It was absolutely the most romantic thing they needed to do, and with Alice then recommending a late night, he was in. "With you, I'd do anything." He quietly hummed before kissing the crown of her head. He's ready for a long night.

Alice hummed softly in gentle amusement.

“Red really does suit you.” She said as she looked between his scarf and his now flushed cheeks. She set the empty cup down and linked her arm in John’s elbow and rested her hair upon his shoulder for the duration of the ride.

When the driver stopped back in the park he helped them both down and smiled widely at them both.

“Now you two have a great time ya hear? It was a pleasure having you on my tour.” He nodded at them as they walked off.

Alice looked up at a John as they ambled through the park, the snow gently fell onto his dark hair.

It was beautiful, truly beautiful to be walking around Central Park with the man she loved at this time of year, even though it was busy the Christmas magic was still there. They walked by the lake as the lights slowly shone brighter as it got darker, illuminating it and everything around it.

“What shall we do now? The night is still young if we’re staying up.” She said with a grin.

She walks along the complex, sneaking past the strip club below and up to the familiar door she’s seen before. She’s tempted to leave the package behind again, but decided to wait and stay this time. She takes a deep breath and knocks ‘shave and a haircut…’

She waits. No knowing if they’re in or if they are which one of them will even open the door.

She’s about to leave the package again but something within her is willing her to stay.

Alice waits.

Frankie looks to the door, he... he hadn't been expecting anyone. Donnie looked up from his homework from his tutor then looked over to Frankie.

"Were you expectin' someone?"

Donnie shook his head, Frankie got up and cracked open the door. His tense shoulders dropped as he opened the door fully to reveal Alice. Frankie immediately gave her a hug.

Alice took a step back before anyone came to the door, she didn’t want the boys, Frankie specifically, to feel unsafe. She smiled softly as the door opened a crack and a small ‘oh’, escaped her as she was pulled into the hug. She smiled and hugged Frankie back with one arm, squeezing him tight.

“Hey, kiddo…” She said out of habit as he hugged her. “I didn’t hang around.” She admitted and pulled back a little, still offering that comforting smile. “Hey Donnie!” She looked around Frankie and waved at the younger brother.

“I’m good Frankie, how are you both…how are you doing?”

Frankie pulls away from the hug, smiling.

"We've just been celebrating the holidays, I was actually hoping you'd make an appearance."

Frankie goes into the kitchen part of their cramped little room, gesturing for her to come on in. The room was definitely less dirty than it usually was for them, and 8 candles were propped up in the window sill as a place of honor.

Donnie got up and held out a hand for Alice to shake, "I'm Donnie. Frankie told me that you two talked. I mean, obviously, I was there." Donnie laughs a little.

"Thank you for the Pie during Thanksgiving. It was really delicious."

Frankie returns with a small wrapped gift. The wrapping paper is just an old newspaper, but there were clearly efforts to make it prettier with that bow put on it.

"Here we are. Take a look."

Alice follows him inside still carrying her own package.

“Hey Donnie, Alice.” She says and goes over to shake his hand as a proper greeting. “You were pretty busy last time, so don’t worry. I hope it’s all going well though?”

She chuckles a little, still grinning. “I’m so glad you enjoyed it.”

She places her package on the table and her eyes widen as Frankie hands her the gift. “Oh, this is so kind, thank you so much.” She unwraps i carefully to reveal a handmade deep blue knitted scarf. “This is beautiful. Thank you.” She hugs Frankie and turns to hug Donnie too.

“I have something for the both of you too, and please tell me if it’s too much.” She hands them the package. Inside are two wrapped gifts, one in a green ribbon and one in orange. There’s also another hamper of food, with an apple pie this time, crackers, various kosher meats, cheeses and pickles she’s also put two cards in the bottom of the hamper, each containing a little money for them both. “Something for the holidays, for both of you from me.”

Donnie nods enthusiastically, "Yeh, my tutor's been helpin' me out with all the numbers, I'm gettin better! I know that 3 dollars, just means 3," Donnie holds up 3 fingers. "Three whole dollars!"

Frankie smiles, tearing up a little as Alice loves her scarf, he had learned how to hand knit just for her. "You're welcome." as Alice hands over the package and Donnie and Frankie witness all of the things inside of the package. "aw shucks...You... You didn'... You didn' have ta." Donnie's eyes lit up, immediately pulling out the foods, "WOAH FRANKIE, THIS COULD LAST FOREVER!"

"Not with your hungry ass."

Frankie teased before sitting down and held out the carefully wrapped package for Donnie. Donnie grabbed it, and the two of them both looked at it for a moment, not knowing what exactly to do before they carefully opened the packages, Donnie placing his ribbon on his own head. In Frankie's package, a film Camera, to take pictures of their most cherished memories, and in Donnie's package, a radio to listen to music or shows. Donnie absolutely lit up, immediately, and excitedly turning on the radio and classical music started playing in the small room.

Frankie was a lot quieter in his appreciation, but he certainly appreciated it nonetheless, smiling happily towards Alice.

Alice smiled at Donnie. “That’s great! Your tutoring seems to be going so well!” She said honestly and held the scarf close. It was truly beautiful and the colour complimented her. She could tell Frankie had put a lot of thought and effort into it.

She chucked at their banter and sits at the kitchen table to watch them open the gifts like a proud parent. She squeezed Frankie reassuringly on the arm, she knows she didn’t have to get them anything but she wanted to. And she knew it wouldn’t go to waste and would be appreciated. She wasn’t doing this for some high moral ground. She found she really did care for these young men. Like a magnet pulling her towards them without ever really knowing why.

What made it even more special was spending it with John. They’d landed at JFK a few days before. Having settled into the hotel, all expenses paid, they made their way out onto the cold crisp air. She held onto the crook of John’s arm as they made their way down the steps and onto the busy streets.

This was lovely. The hustle and bustle, the shouting from street corner merchants, the smell from food vendors. It was enough of an experiment as it was, but even better considering she was spending it with her husband. To her, this was all she needed for the holidays. They’d agreed that they weren’t doing gifts this year, that the trip alone would be enough, but she knows what he’s like and he knows her inside out. Frankie goes into the kitchen part of their cramped little room, gesturing for her to come on in. The room was definitely less dirty than it usually was for them, and 8 candles were propped up in the window sill as a place of honor.

Donnie got up and held out a hand for Alice to shake, "I'm Donnie. Frankie told me that you two talked. I mean, obviously, I was there." Donnie laughs a little.

"Thank you for the Pie during Thanksgiving. It was really delicious."

Frankie returns with a small wrapped gift. The wrapping paper is just an old newspaper, but there were clearly efforts to make it prettier with that bow put on it.

"Here we are. Take a look."
