AND ANOTHER THING Costume design in tv and film is violently under appreciated and wholly looked over by the industry and audiences alike. I remember in one of my first film studies lessons we were discussing the core elements of film and I said “costume design” and my teacher was like “yeah definitely but also it’s not exactly a key element let’s be honest ” like fuck you karl you don’t get it. The clothes we wear directly reflect an insane amount of information about ourselves. Simply looking at an outfit a character is wearing on screen can tell you about their status in society, their mental state, their perception of the world, their perception of themselves, their priorities in life, where they come from , when they come from, how they think they deserve to look. Our innermost feelings and ideals are projected out into the world using the pieces of fabric we wrap ourselves in every damn day. So much as the height of a heel, the length of a skirt, the cut of a pair of jeans, the number of petticoats, the amount of wrinkles in a button down, or the heft of a shoulder pad can completely make or break the interpretation of a character.

Costume is a performance in of itself. It is so important, and I’m sick of brushing it off in my god awful film lessons.
