i find moritz stiefel to be an extremely compelling, beautiful, and complex character. all the facets of him being an abused repressed confused queer kid with an absolute freak of a best friend, who doesnât get the support he needs at school and is actively bullied by his teachers and parents. he tries so hard and heâs so desperate to understand why the world is treating him so horribly along with newly burgeoning and scary sexual thoughts and feelings. he is truly the central figure of spring awakening to me, representing the repression and subsequent unfolding of self-discovery mixed with the shame and fear of their society, pushed into a demise by familial abuse and neglect. and he has so many people in his life who love him so much. and he pushes them away. god i love moritz
more dwsa-specific thoughts because iâve been returning to the interest (i first saw spring awakening SEVEN YEARS AGO!)
i find daniel durantâs moritz to be so so compelling bc he really has all these senses of awkwardness and being belittled, especially in the first school scene how heâs hunched down in the seat and makes himself smaller than everyone else. and he has a sort of awkward walk around adults, that goes away during donât do sadness when heâs alone and in those youâve known as a ghost, which i think is a really inspired physical choice to really play moritzâs alienation around authority figures.
then he also has all this absolute joy and expressiveness even in his anger and desperation!! like he still has so much ârock n rollâ attitude in his snarkiness during and then there were none. and he even has a resigned kind of weary joy in his last moments talking about the angels and his imagined last night where he âgot drunk in the snow and played piratesâ. i just really think that all the specific choices the production team and daniel made for moritz were absolutely amazing
i found my heart. moritz, oh my god, i found yours too. and it was still beating.
