ANDREW LINCOLN
Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg 21 Sep 2025
LK: Would you ever go back to it?
Andy: To the show? Yeah. Well, there's a conversation happening right now …
Hi, this is the op from the Merle post. I follow you lol. This is where I watched the clip: https://x.com/ShimBo84/status/1977549045674774544?t=GVhCKj1iN6imN0CKGMMOuA&s=19
Where it fails has nothing to do with making Merle a coward imo, child abuse is not about bravery or cowardice. I just think it flattens both of their characters. What is shown is the most stereotypical way they could have shown it (dad being a scary shadow figure you run away from) and I like to think it's more complex than that, because it was. When the writing was better.
Anyway, hope you're having a nice day!! :)
thanks for the clip! how do you think they could have made it more complex, out of interest? i would never argue that this is a complicated topic generally. My resentment comes when some people seem to refuse to give Merle an inch in terms of the character being capable of something good, stereotypical or not. happy saturday to you!
also i kind of disagree with a lot of people saying that this daryl merle flashback is a retcon of what their dynamic was 'supposed to be.'
merle was an arsehole a lot of the time, but he also wasn't stupid. far from it. people don't give him enough credit, probably because they simply dislike him as a character idk. he would have known that daryl was getting abused. that was why he left. because he would have killed their dad if he didn't. he says that in season 3. he wasn't deluded enough to think that daryl didn't take the brunt of the abuse that merle used to take before he left home.
why isnt he allowed to have mere moments of goodness, whilst mostly being a rotten charcter? to make him entirely coward is very black and white thinking imo.
anyway i need to watch the actual clip to form a better opinion i guess.
I don't like the "Go, don't look back" flashback in the spinoff. It's too black and white. Merle heroically holding their father off while Daryl escapes... it's not unrealistic, but it's not how I imagined their dynamic in their childhood. Give me Merle who fails. Not out of malice or incompetence, just because he is also a child and scared.
Sometimes living in an abusive household as siblings means appeasing the abuser over and over again and failing your sibling in the process. Being unfair to them. "Stop crying, I hear dad coming." "Go with him on that hunting trip, it won't be as bad as you think and you know you can't just say no to him." "You're right, but don't talk back to him like that." You don't remove them from situations, even though you know you should and would in an ideal world, because in this one you can't. The fallout would be so big that you wouldn't know how to deal with it. You want to shield both of you, so instead of saving them, you teach them how to live with it.
And I think that is so important with both the psychology behind Merle abandoning Daryl and how we see Daryl behave as an adult. Because despite his tendency to lash out and behave violently, Daryl is someone who endures. Daryl is loyal to a fault. He's the executioner. He'll ignore his own wants and needs to get shit done for people. Sometimes, especially if it's with Merle, he doesn't even recognize mistreatment.
Over and over again we see both of the Dixon brothers having a philosophy of "That's just how shit is." and that's what it is and where it could come from. Living with it. Always having to have lived with it.
Good old days
bless andrew lincoln for being back in the UK doing drama, but fff coldwater was not it. i don't mind him playing a 'pathetic' character, but the drama was so contrived/absurd. im sorry, but he deserved better than that.
such a shame cos i thought the first ep was pretty strong.
