I have had numerous bad experiences with Kickstarters. They range from long periods of radio silence to unannounced discontinuations of projects. In the latter case, whenever backers including myself raise a complaint to Kickstarter, we have received the same useless copypasta response from the platform.
Over three and a half years ago, I lost $100US+ on the Truebuds project, which claimed that they would develop the world’s smallest stereo cordless earbuds. Even after submitting a complaint to the US Federal Trade Commission, I still have not received my ‘reward’ nor have received any assistance from the commission. In response to the unannounced discontinuation of the the project, some of my fellow backers have completed some detective work and discovered that the creator had gotten married after the funds were raised. I have a sneaking suspicion that our ‘pledges’ have been embezzled and were used to cover his wedding fees.
Since this project, I have looked at Kickstarter projects in the same way that I look at stocks, because just like with stocks, you may never see a return on investment if you invest in bad Kickstarter project. Nowadays, I investigate the track records of creators and their collaborators and weigh them against the costs involved with investing in their project. I also have one golden rule that I now abide by and that is to never to invest more than the amount I donate to charities on Kickstarter. Considering the risks involved with Kickstarter, I would rather purchase items when they are ready for sale.
Otome visual novel London Detective Mysteria coming west for PS Vita, PC this Fall
XSEED Games is bringing Karin Entertainment-developed otome visual novel London Detective Mysteria to North America and Europe for PS Vita and PC as a digital-only title this fall, the company announced.
London Detective Mysteria was originally released as Eikoku Tantei Mysteria for PSP in 2013 in Japan, followed by an enhanced PS Vita version called Eikoku Tantei Mysteria: The Crown in 2016.
Here is an overview of the game, via XSEED Games:
Eschew the frivolities of 19th century London’s high society and instead delve into the curiosities that lie hidden in London’s darkest corners in London Detective Mysteria. Playing as the heiress of House Whiteley, players will name their own Lady Whiteley as they investigate mysteries of London and interact with personalities inspired by famous fictional characters including Detective Holmes, Jack the Ripper, and more. Take full control over the experience by adjusting text speed or even the individual speaking volumes of individual characters and their original Japanese voices. Players must choose their words carefully as they interact with other characters, as decisions made throughout the story will not only affect special rewards but will also shape whether Lady Whiteley finds love or something more sinister in the shadows of 19th century London.
London Detective Mysteria will be playable in English for the first time at Anime Expo 2018 from July 5 to 8 in Los Angeles. XSEED Games’ full E3 2018 lineup will also be playable. XSEED Games will also host an “XSEED Games Localization Panel” on July 6 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. PT.
Completion Status: Finished Kadin’s Good Ending, but currently waiting for bug fix for Richard and Romeo’s routes
Current Rating (accounts factors discussed below & price): 4/10 (Subject to change after bug fix)
✧Synopsis
“Her parents are famous writers and big fans of Shakespeare. Hoping for a daughter filled with beauty and grace, they named her Juliet.
Instead, their daughter grew up to be the opposite. She's a girl who cares about doing things her own way; the prank master way.
When her parents bring her to a new town in search of inspiration for their careers, Juliet is enrolled into a new school.
A few unexpected situations make her first day of school, one to remember. Now, after having not pulled a prank in a while, she is quickly back to her old self.
Though this time it's not just going to be all about pranks. Juliet might be running into a few unexpected feelings as well...”

✧Story Review
The prologue depicts Juliet Hayes (the heroine) as a sarcastic, headstrong, individualistic prankster who, due to her parents’ occupations, is constantly moving schools. Almost straightaway, the game also foreshadows that that there is more to Juliet than meets the eye. This foreshadowing is done through the clever use of 3 children’s toys, each related to one of the 3 love interests. The symbolism of the toys quickly and cleanly tells players that the game is linked to Juliet’s childhood and that the love interests are all childhood friends. The best thing about this game is that the childhood toys do not disappear into the abyss and only to resurface at the end of the game like observed in other games. The toys constantly recur in the game, but in Kadin’s route in particular, it does not really move the story, rather it is a topic for banter.
✧User Interface
The game in its current state is very buggy...(。•́︿•̀。) It is currently impossible to finish Richard and Romeo’s route without being kicked out of the routes and into the main menu. Considering that this is generally due to the inappropriate use of the “return” command in Ren’py, I do not believe that Richard and Romeo’s routes have been properly beta tested before their release.(。•́︿•̀。) It is also very hard to get the good ending for Kadin’s route, I had to try so many times before I could get the good ending...(。•́︿•̀。)
✧Extras
The chibis that were unlocked during the routes were cute, but didn’t really add anything to the gaming experience.
✧Thoughts
As someone who pre-ordered the game and has been looking forward to the game for around 3 years, I was a bit disappointed with Richard and Romeo’s route because the bugs kept kicking me out....(。•́︿•̀。) Otherwise, I quite enjoyed the game (Kadin’s route), but like I said earlier it was a little too hard to get the Good Ending...(。•́︿•̀。) But, I hung in there because if you read the story, Kadin really deserves Juliet!! (*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑(*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑(*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑ I would recommend playing the game after the bug fixes have been made and the walkthrough has been released to avoid any frustrations that may detract from the gaming experience.(^^)b (^^)b

PS: The game is set in an alternate history with an alternate religion.”
- YETU GAME
✧Story Review
I’ve only played 2 other Chinese otome games (Pastry Lovers and Blood Code), but Lost is Secular Love is by far the best Chinese otome game I’ve encountered. The first few chapters beautifully sets the scene of the game and introduces Qiyue Cui (the heroine) to players as the sole breadwinner of an impoverished noble house. After some convincing from her mother, Qiyue agrees to marry into a family of Moyu monks, who are in possession of vast rice paddies. She has 3 romance interests and with each route, there is a clear theme, which plays a key role in eliminating monotony in this game. The story also flows fluidly and does not feel as forced as what I’ve observed in a vast number of indie games.
✧Voice Acting
The voice acting is welcome addition to the game and does not grate my ears, which I find occurs in some voiced games where the VA does not suit the character.(^^)b
✧User Interface
An interesting element of this game is that you get to choose whether the love interest has hair or not.キタ━━━━。゚+.ヽ(´∀`*)ノ ゚+.゚━━━━!! So for all the gamers would a bald fetish, I’m sure you’ll love this game!! (^^)b
✧Extras
I found the chibis at the end of each chapter very cute and entertaining!!(^^)b
✧Thoughts
I loved Zhikong as a character, but wasn’t so happy with his ending.(。•́︿•̀。) I liked Ziqing’s ending more! It was so cute!!(^^)b Would also recommend purchasing the artbook, it contains stories from the love interests’ perspective.(^^)b

- ドライラボ(Translated by hen-na-fuyu-no-usagi)
✧Story Review
The ending was the outcome of the Winter Cup match (e.g. Shuutoku losing against Rakuzan).... I can watch the anime for that ...
Midorima was surprisingly mature about the relationship drama between the heroine and Takao (O_O)
✧User Interface
Very little choices to make and felt a lot more like a kinetic novel
✧Thoughts
I’d still rather ship Midorima and Takao together. (#^.^#)

A while back, NTT Solmare decided to sell some of what I assume is their leftover AX17 stock on Tokyo Otaku Mode, so being a fan of their games, I decided to grab myself a fanbook. The package also came with some freebies/omake.
✧Shall we Date? Fanbook
To be honest, I was pretty disappointed with the fanbook. Not only was it ultra thin, but all it contained were games CGs and no extra content. I guess it was more of an artbook? I really don’t think it was worth its $50 price tag.
✧Tokyo Otaku Mode’s Omake
Like always, Tokyo Otaku Mode included some pretty omake, which feature artwork by their TOM special creators.
✧Thoughts
Shipping fees for Tokyo Otaku Mode are generally pretty steep, (_ _|||) but since I subscribe to their newsletters, I was pretty lucky in the fact that they were giving out coupons for free shipping at the time. 。^‿^。 If you love anime merch and plan on buying a lot, I think they also have a free shipping offer when you hit a certain amount. I do suggest signing up to their newsletter for discount offers if you plan on purchasing anime merch and if you use this link (Tokyo Otaku Mode) to signup, you’ll be able to get 5% off your first purchase. d(・∀・○)

It’s a bit very late, but here’s my Mystic Messenger cushion unboxing post. So, a while back I ordered a Mystic Messenger 707 cushion, but in a strange turn of events, I ended up with Yoosung’s set. (・・;) I emailed Cheritz about exchanging it straightaway. To my surprise, they said not only would they send me the right set, but I could keep the Yoosung set. And within a few weeks, I received the 707 set I had originally ordered.(^▽^)
✧Postcards
An extra gift that Cheritz included along with an apology note. I swear Cheritz is really nice!! 。^‿^。
✧Thoughts
Cheritz has really good customer service and is extremely generous compared to the other companies I have dealt with. The way they deal with things makes you happy to continue supporting them (e.g. the way they dealt with people rewinding their time when the game was first released).
