Will Byers has always been a little bit jealous of Steve Harrington.
To Will, it always felt like Steve was everything he couldn’t be. He’s handsome, he’s popular with the girls, he’s charming and brave and cool. He’s never had to worry about being called a nerd or a freak, he’s never been told he’s weird or doesn’t belong — he simply fits in, navigating life with a breeziness that makes Will’s stomach twist with jealousy.
Will wishes he could be half the guy Steve is. Will’s not brave, he’s been scared to death for the majority of his life. He’s not cool, he’s a total nerd. He’s not charming, he’s awkward and off putting.
And he’s certainly not popular with the girls. Not like Steve is. He could never be like Steve.
Will builds a habit of avoiding Steve for this very reason. It’s not that Steve is ever cruel to him — he could never be cruel, and that’s part of the problem. It’s just that Steve’s very existence feels like a punch to Will’s gut. He’s the perfect guy, and Will is…well, he’s Will.
But then you come along. Steve’s new girlfriend. And you’re nothing like Will would have imagined.
To put it simply, you’re weird. Steve brings you to meet the gang for the first time and you show up in a t-shirt with David Bowie’s face plastered across the chest. Your hair has a streak of pink in it and your bag is covered in nerdy pins and patches. You’re quirky and a bit awkward and again, nowhere near what Will would have imagined Steve Harrington’s girlfriend to be like.
Will takes an instant liking to you.
Slowly but surely, you become a part of the gang. Everyone likes you, El especially, but Will likes you the most. Mostly because you’re a lot like him, except you’re always so unapologetically yourself.
You show him cool music and introduce him to your favourite shows, and Will forgets about his longing to be more like Steve. In fact, he decides he’d rather be more like you.
As you spend more time with Steve and his group of kids, Will notices the ways in which Steve loves you.
Steve listens to your ramble about your weird interests, even if he doesn’t understand them himself. He buys you thoughtful gifts, jewellery that matches something you already own, or the book about rare bugs you’ve been wanting for ages. He walks around with his arm around your shoulder or your waist like he’s proud of you. He doesn’t treat you like you’re any different for being a little weird. Will likes that.
One night, a few months after Steve first introduced you, Will sits on Steve’s big couch, sandwiched between Mike and Max. It’s movie night at Steve’s place, and everyone’s squashed up on the sofas or on beanbags on the floor.
You and Steve are curled up on the loveseat. Will is pretty sure Steve hasn’t taken his eyes off you for the entire time the movie’s been running. He looks like he’s trying to watch it through the dancing reflection in your eyes.
Will doesn’t mean to eavesdrop. It’s just, he’s already seen this movie twice, and he’s more interested in you and Steve. Your relationship has become like a beacon of hope to him, a ray of sunlight shot through a gap in the stormclouds, a promise that someday, a weird, odd boy like Will might just find love like you and Steve. If Steve can love you, who’s to say someone won’t love Will one day?
Steve is murmuring something to you. Subtly, Will leans closer.
“You look so pretty,” Steve murmurs, quiet enough that only Will hears.
You giggle softly. “Shut up.”
Steve grins lopsidedly, and Will watches, transfixed, as the older boy tenderly tucks a lock of hair behind your ear. His fingers brush the stack of earrings that decorate the edge of your ear.
“I’m serious,” Steve says, and he sounds like he really means it. “You’re gorgeous.”
“Watch the movie, Steve,” you deadpan, but Will notices you’re biting back a pleased smile.
Steve sighs, but he finally takes his eyes off you and fixes them on the TV. A moment later he leans down to murmur into your hair, “Tell me what’s happening? I haven’t been paying attention.”
“Oh my god.”
“What? You’re pretty, it’s distracting.”
You roll your eyes and say something about how Steve is corny, but Will feels the tips of his ears go red hot. He looks away before either of you can catch him eavesdropping, his face warm with blush.
He’s not sure why he feels like this. It’s just that, you’re not the kind of girl Will imagined Steve bringing home. Maybe it was shallow of him, but he always thought Steve would end up with a more…conventional girl. Someone more like Steve, popular and perfect, the white-picket fence type.
But Steve loves you in all your weirdness. Will sees it in the way the older boy rubs your arm while you explain the movie to him in a hushed whisper. He sees it in the way Steve stocks his pantry with your favourite snacks without you having to ask. He sees it in the way Steve never belittles you for being different.
And it makes Will feel like maybe, just maybe, an awkward, weird, nerdy boy like him can find love just like you’ve found with Steve.
