Belle de Jour (1967)

“The root of what?” she asked curiously, she wasn’t desperate to know but it seemed like a logical next question. “Well, I like cola,” she assured the other girl, “-and I think I should try it anyway, it’s like a part of the American experience, yes?” she suggested with a chuckle, charmed by the idea of a so-called quintessential American experience. When she thought of it she thought of football teams and cheerleaders, cherry pie and now, she would add root beer to that image.
A moment later her mind reeled back to one of Hope’s earlier statements. “Is it you don’t like alcohol? You don’t drink it?” she asked curiously, it was a fairly deeply ingrained part of her own culture but she wasn’t a particularly heavy drinker herself and she rarely binged.
“ should we get some from the store ? ” hope suggests . “ we do need to stock up on our mini fridge. we’re need some ben and jerry’s — which, is a tragedy i must add, but also an essential dessert for any university student in america . we can make ice cream cookie sandwiches with it ! ” she’s already salivating at the thought of the sweet treat, only reeled back into reality when naomi had asked her a question . “ i try to avoid it the best i can, honestly . it’s not that i don’t like it, rather i don’t like who i am when i’ve had one too many . ”
𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐚 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫.
Aurora looked over at Hope and raised a brow. “Well, today does seem like a great day to go on a bike ride or take a walk somewhere,” she suggested. “Normally when it’s a sunny day like it is right now, I go to my favorite spot on campus and have a little picnic and catch up on my reading. It sounds kind of lame but that’s my definition of a perfect afternoon.”
“ that’s my favourite thing to do ! ” she gasps . “ although, i usually have my picnics on darrow house’s backyard. i play old songs and daydream — should we go do one right now ? ” she looks at aurora with a gigantic smile plastered on her face . “ i never have anyone to go on picnics with me. ” the smile turned into a pout quickly . “ i usually have to bug my housemates until they agree. ”

with a head tilt, isadora pretends to think with a pointer finger tapping on her chin. “well, before i suggest anything, i think you should tell me what’s something you’d really like to do. i don’t want to disappoint.” isadora states, arms stretching out slightly to mimic the other. “don’t want to ruin this nice day.”
“ you could never disappoint me or ruin any day — ever ! ” hope objected in an adamant way, that strangely enough, worked well with her calm disposition . “ although, since you asked : i’d like to actually go swimming . ” in a river, in a lake, anything but a public pool.
𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐳𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐫.
“ perhaps a trip to the mall ? ” she suggests , patting down the pleats of her skirt . " i’d rather get my clothes online , but if i spot a blazer i like … well , the heart wants what the heart wants . "
“ oh, the mall . that’s a great idea ! ” her eyes lit up . “ i did need some knitting materials. i’m trying to follow this patchwork-esque knit cardigan tutorial on youtube and i’ve been obsessed ! ” honestly, she knew nothing about knitting anything, but the person on youtube made it look so do-able that she was inspired to take the task on .

“truly! the sun is shining, the birds are singing and the sales are rolling in!” they sighed happily as they scrolled through their emails looking at various offers. “how are you limiting yourself this early on in the school year. nevermind, if you only have a few hours — you should absolutely focus on whatever is going to not be possible to do later. you know? i for one, will be spending today finding a graphic design student who will help me make a digital flyer and shopping, maybe going for lunch and getting drinks. what are your options?”
“ whatever isn’t possible later … ” she repeats in a hum as she tilted her face towards the sky, and let gravity pull her head back down landing on charlotte . then an idea popped up : “ that’s it ! you’re a genius, lottie ! ” she squealed in excitement . “ i’ll just tag along with you and help you with your errands . it’s hitting two birds with one stone — i don’t condone that activity, obviously but ! i get to spend some time with you and it’s something that i might not possibly do later or get the chance to . ”

“I can’t believe I’ve lived to see the day that I’m ranked below your studies.” He shakes his head in mock disappointment, but whoops triumphantly when she agrees to come only moments later. “You can hate me aaaaaaall you like while we’re off having the absolute best time,” Jamie tells her brightly, tossing her pillow back onto her bed. Non-negotiable? Oof. He supposes it’s only fair, but that doesn’t change the fact that the sheer idea of doing actual studying is always reminiscent of stepping on a lego barefoot. “…What kind of work are we talking about? And are you sure I’m the best option to help? Surely it’ll take twice as long and be three-times as mediocre if I’m your academic life-line.”
she only manages to roll her eyes at his theatrics ; she loves him, he knows this . she pushes herself up from her bed to scavenge her closet for something suitable to wear, but it was hard to think of an outfit when she didn’t know the dress code for the party . “ what kind of party are we going to again ? ” she looked back from her shoulder, before continuing on her scavenger hunt . “ are you really finding an excuse not to help me ? because let me tell you it’s lousy at best . you can do better . ” she clicked her tongue playfully . “ take responsibility for me missing out on important school work, geez . ”
𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐨.
maggie looks up from her phone to smile at hope beside her . “ you gotta tell me what’s on your list otherwise i could tell you absolutely anything in the world . ” she falls silent , smile fading the slightest bit , “ you could find a spot and dance . nothing better than the sun on your face while doing what you love . ”
“ i have no list . i want to do everything and anything and yet there’s not a single thing on my mind . ” she sighed dramatically . “ that is why i need you and your brilliant mind to come up with an ingenious activity ! ” she chortles, and lit up when she mentioned dancing . “ oh ! that sounds wonderful ! i wonder if the backyard at darrow house could do well . the soil may be too soft for a proper pirouette . ”

She raised an eyebrow curiously at the mention of root beer, it certainly hadn’t been what she had in mind but now she was interested. “I don’t know,” she confessed, “What is it?” she asked, completely clueless, “I’ve heard of it,” she conceded and that was true, it was in just about every cheesy American TV show she’d ever watched but she still didn’t know what it was. It looked sort of like Coca Cola if she recalled correctly, nothing like actual beer and she was pretty sure it wasn’t alcoholic but maybe she was mistaken.
“ it’s uhm, root beer … ” it’s funny how she couldn’t really describe what root beer was . she typically just enjoyed the drink, no questions asked . she didn’t even know what it was made of, she just knew this : “ well, it’s a carbonated drink ! much like cola, but sweeter, i think ? and it’s typically not alcoholic, which is one of the pros in my opinion . ” she laughs softly afterwards. “ i’m sorry i’m not much help, but you do have to try it if you haven’t had one . ”

“Well, there is–” Dmitry gestured to the surrounding area, “–absolutely nothing around. You could go to the shit bar, or the other shit bar. Or to the.. car theatre? I don’t know how that thing works, but I’m fairly sure motorcycles don’t count.”
“ i don’t really go to bars though . ” not alone anyway, she occasionally hung out in them when her friends or classmates invited her to come . “ a car theatre ? ” she raised her brow . “ and how come motorcycles don’t count ? ” she frowned, though she could understand the general discomfort of having to sit through a movie on a motorcycle . “ have you ever been to one ? ”
𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐨𝐯 𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐲.
“The plastic boxes would still be in the closet,” Dmitry pointed out, though he was pretty sure it wouldn’t be the worst idea. “Maybe I could move all my bins in there though, and make like a.. cat wall, so she can’t jump in. Cats are weird though, she’d probably find a way.”
“ cats are truly such marvelous, yet such mysterious creatures . ” she nods her head . the thought of a buff cat enters her mind again and she couldn’t help but laugh. “ should we get you some plastic containers right now then and tackle this experiment of ours ? ” she suggests .

With her chin tilted upward to greet the sun, Naomi was enjoying the warmth of the summer rays on her cheeks. She felt like she could sit there for hours without moving, enjoying the pleasure of simply existing.
That was until Hope piped up, inspiring Naomi to think of all the other lovely things she could do with her day. “I never want to go inside again,” she announced, she’d already rolled the sleeves of her t-shirt up, exposing her shoulders, her bare legs stretched and absorbing every bit of sunshine the clear sky had to offer. “We could get a beer before class?” she suggested, raising an eyebrow, “-If there is somewhere to sit outside,” she added as a condition, refusing to spend any more time inside than what was required of her.
“ never . ” she agreed with a dreamlike smile, face tilted towards the sun . much like naomi, hope could spend hours and hours outdoors . “ root beer ? ” her eyes lit up at the thought of slurping on the sweet concoction . she had a terrible sweet tooth .

Blake’s eyes followed to where she managed to find her book, laughing at the burst of excitement mostly because the energy rubbed off on him. He was actually jittery about school for once, but he was always skeptical about sudden good emotions. He was never sure where they came from. “I don’t think I’ve had boba, honestly,” he admitted. “First time for everything, I guess. Just hope it doesn’t end up becoming another addiction because I cannot afford that.”
“ you’re kidding ! tell me you’re kidding ! ” she gasped from his confession . “ we have got to get you boba. pronto ! ” she insisted, grabbing his arm ( yet, mindful of the books he was nursing in his hands ) to the checkout . “ oh, that is true . ” her excitement waived off of her for a second, but bounced back just as quick . “ not to worry, i’ll be with you every step of the way if that happens . ” she smiled in an attempt to prompt a smile from him as well .
𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐡 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧.
Waving it off, “I’m sure that happens all the time, to everyone” Shiloh said, trying to be polite. To be honest Shiloh didn’t think she ever slept in, when she had something to do that day. But that was her, if she missed or was late to anything she had a terrible freak out. “I also heard this professor is always late, so don’t worry” she shrugged.
“ oh ? maybe i should get them a proper alarm clock, then . ” she giggled, covering her mouth feeling as though she was being quite mischievious joking about a professor like that . “ truth is, me and jamie went to this party last night and i was so exhausted ! i just fell in bed and dozed off . ”
𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐬𝐬.
Giving her a nod, “Thank you” his rough voice spoke. Sliding into the chair beside her, Chuck waved the bartender over. “Can I get Blue Label neat and” he started looking over at the blonde, “What are you drinking?” he asked her giving her a smile.
hope had gone back to minding her own business, or in other words : daydreaming . until she was snapped back to reality when he asked . she looked around once again, then pointed a finger at herself. “ me ? ” she looks down at her cup, then back at him. “ just water, although i felt a little reckless tonight so i asked for lemon water . ” she leaned in to whisper, gave him a wink and laughed at how ridiculous her joke was .
𝐣𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐧.
“There’s more than enough time to do both,” he points out in response to her complaint. Shopping in the afternoon, then clubbing in the evening. A perfect plan. He swiftly reaches out to catch the pillow she lobs at him, bringing it to his chest. “And I, your dear friend, live at the bottom of your priority list,” he sighs. “I see how it is. Well, I suppose it’s your choice, but– you know you’ll regret it if you don’t come. I’ll text you a photo-a-minute of how much fun we’re having without you until you change your mind and show up anyway. So– save us both the trouble and just agree to come without all that nonsense?”
“ you're not on the bottom of my list ! i just have studies and projects and reading to do . ” though as she heard her list down all the tedious work she had to get done, she found the idea of letting loose in a party much more appealing — oh ! and the thought of missing out on a good time left her with a sick feeling . “ ugh, okay . i’m going, i’m going . i hate you . ” she glares at him, but her eyes bore this playful glint and her lips curved into a smile that betrayed her statement . “ you’re helping me with my work after this though . ” and before he could talk his way out of it, she added, with a triumphant smile, no less : “ non-negotiable . ”
