Gaara stares at her for what feels like an eternity, his grip tightens until it becomes painful, but Hinata doesn’t react.

“That’s not enough,” he finally says.

Silence returns, Hinata can hear her heartbeat in her ears and the words come out before she can stop them.

“If something happens to you… I…” she stops, not knowing how to continue.

“You what?” Gaara asks, holding his breath.

“I like you.”

Gaara steps closer, his face inches from hers, and Hinata can see every detail: the dark lines around his eyes, the way his pupils dilate and contract erratically, the black circles under his eyes, his face slightly stained by something that could be sweat or could be blood.

"You don't know me." he says, his voice dropping into a growl. "You don't know anything about me. I hurt you and yet you still look at me with compassion."

Hinata whimpers in pain. The sand holds her firmly, without squeezing hard enough to hurt her further, but her stabbed side screams in protest.

"G-Gaara-san..." she gasps, trying to speak through the pain. "I'm not l-looking at you with c-compassion, I just-"

"Shut up!" He growls, pressing closer. "Don't talk like you can fix me, like there's anything in me worth saving..."

He stops abruptly, his eyes meeting hers, and there's something broken in that gaze, something so deeply damaged that it makes Hinata's heart clench.

Hinata should feel happy hearing Sakura praise Naruto, since the fact that more people are noticing how amazing he is should make something warm grow in her chest, but without warning, a pair of teal eyes flashes through her mind in a way that unsettles her, and she feels the ghost of sand brushing against her legs.

The image is so sudden that Hinata almost jolts in her seat.

“You’re already strong, just because they don’t see it doesn’t change that.”

Hinata is horrified by her own thoughts.

Why is she thinking about Gaara? Why is he the one who appears in her mind when her friends are talking about boys they like?

She must be losing her mind, if just Gaara’s presence makes her legs tremble uncontrollably and her hands sweat with fear, or at least that’s how it used to be until a few days ago.

Why did she think of Gaara? What does that mean?

It can’t mean anything, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s just because she’s been training with him lately, that’s all. He’s only on her mind because she’s spent too much time with him recently, not because she feels anything for him.

She can’t feel anything for him, that would be crazy, he loses control often and hurts people. She likes Naruto, bright, brave, determined... not Gaara.

She would never fall for Gaara, Naruto is the only one for her.

"You’re overdoing it."

Hinata turns her head to the left, her eyes wide open. Gaara is there, close to her, staring at her injured hand. She swallows and takes a few steps back, tensing her shoulders, ready to fight if necessary.

Being alone with him after what happened isn’t safe.

Gaara watches her silently for a few seconds, then tilts his head slightly in curiosity.

"If I wanted to kill you, I would have already done it."

Hinata frowns, and her reply slips out before she can stop it.

"T-That’s not exactly r-reassuring."

Gaara doesn’t respond immediately, but he looks away toward the tree line. Hinata lowers her guard just enough to not seem like she’s about to run at any moment.

"What a-are you doing h-here?" she finally asks cautiously.

"I could ask you the same thing."

She hesitates for a moment before answering.

"I’m t-training."

Gaara glances at the dummy, noting the recent marks, then at her hand, where the torn skin shows the beginning of blood.

"That’s not training, that’s losing control."

Gaara gasps, surprised, and his hands loosen for a crucial instant. Hinata rolls to the side, falling off the futon, hitting the floor hard. She coughs violently, clutching her neck, each inhalation like a knife descending through her throat. Her chest rises and falls with difficulty as she finally feels she can breathe again, though every muscle in her body screams from the effort and newly lived fear.

“You don’t understand…” Gaara murmurs, still kneeling on her futon, bringing a hand to the spot where the lamp struck his head. He’s not bleeding, the sand protected him at the last second, but he’s clearly dazed. “I’m going crazy…”

He stops, his eyes meeting Hinata’s in the dark, and she can’t move, still trying to catch her breath.

“Shukaku is hunger, destruction, death.” Gaara continues, his voice distorting, lowering to a growl that doesn’t sound completely human. “But with you, he screams differently, he doesn’t want your blood spilled on the ground, he wants you, to possess you, and he’s tearing me apart inside to get to you.”

Hinata activates her Byakugan on pure instinct, searching for weak points she can strike, but what she sees makes her take another step back.

Gaara’s chakra up close is even denser, it makes it hard for her to breathe, and there’s something else, something twisting inside him, something not human. She can see how it moves beneath his skin, how it presses against the walls of his chakra system as if it’s trying to escape.

"W-what... what a-are you?" she whispers without meaning to.

Gaara smiles. It’s small, crooked, completely devoid of joy.

"A demon."

A few days ago my dog passed away, and it’s been incredibly painful to process, but I never thought sitting down to write just to clear my mind would help me this much. I think about her 24/7, from the moment I wake up until I fall asleep, the only time I forget about everything for a little while is when I’m writing, planning future chapters or thinking about new stories. Bless AO3, fanfics, writing and reading… they really are my safe place ♡

So prepare yourselves because I’m creating a lot of content thanks to all this pain.

"Friends?" Gaara interrupts, and there's something bitter in his tone. "I don't have friends, only enemies and comrades who fear me. I made a mistake getting close to you, I was too naive, so let's go our separate ways now."

“I see…” Hinata replies, with her voice shaking. “So that’s it? Y-You just decide I w-was a mistake and that we g-go our separate ways?"

"Yes, that's it."
