The original Japanese name for the Hazy Maze Cave course in Super Mario 64 is “ やみにとける どうくつ”, which translates to “The Cavern Dissolving Into Darkness”. This refers to the fact that the walls of the chambers of the cavern become darker towards the top, with the ceiling being completely black.

In order to save on processing power, the black ceiling is never actually modeled in the first place, as it would not be visible; as such, most chambers merely have high walls, but nothing to actually keep Mario in if he gains enough height. As a result, by using high objects as stepping stones, it is possible to jump high enough to pass over the walls, go through the nonexistent ceiling, and end up in a different part of the cavern.
