“Hey, I understand - I mean, if you’ve been an only child for a suuper long time, it might be a bit weird at first, like I said before? I mean - I was surprised at myself eventually calling people ‘family figures’ too, when I got really close to Minato-san and Minako-san, so it’s okay…but it really does mean a lot you’ll let me give it a go anyway, Hibiki-oneesan.” 

The justice boy paused to ruffle a hand through his hair in a shy motion, but there was no hiding the genuinely happy smile (his serious expression was gone completely for a rare moment here) across his face at Hibiki’s response.

“If you ever need anything like I needed help being recognized yesterday, I’m gonna try even harder to help out - promise! You can count on me!”

“Oh, like how me calling myself Ken-kun is kinda weird for me? I guess it will take a bit of getting used to, yeah. I’m really used to calling you Hibiki-san, myself, aha.”

Ah, yes. This definitely was something Hibiki was going to have to get used to. That sudden ‘Hibiki-oneesan’ had felt like a sucker punch to face. However, seeing how happy this was making Ken Hibiki was prepared to give this a shot.

“Haha, yeah... I’ll be counting on you then, but you probably won’t hear me asking you for a favor any time soon. You still go to school, right? I know you like helping the Force out however you can, but your studies come first, okay?”

Ken was a smart boy. It would forever be a shame if he wouldn’t focus most of his time and energy on his studies. Hibiki understood why he was so eager to spend his time doing small tasks at headquarters, but focusing all his energy on doing those kind of things would be a waste of his potential.

“Speaking of which, if there are any subjects you find difficult to understand or don’t know how to study for I could give you a hand if you would like? I’m not a genius or anything, but my grades used to be above average most of the time.”

While Hibiki settled in his chair, Art signaled the waiter for the menu. 

“Not at all. I’ve been reading.” He smiled and held up his book, cover read ‘Iphigenia’. “The weather is very nice. It’s a good day to spend outdoors.”

Art had been the epitome of a house cat lounging in the sun, surrounded by familiar comforts. Familiar company only made his quality time better.

The waiter passed on the menus as Art drained last of his tea. He wasn’t one for gossip but there was a lot to catch up on. “So, how has everyone been while I was gone.”

The title of the book Art had been reading didn’t ring a bell for Hibiki. From the cover it looked like an interesting read, but then again, one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Rather, the fact that Art was reading it made Hibiki feel like it would a book worth looking into.

When Art asked him what everyone had been up to in his absence, Hibiki shifted in his seat and rubbed the back of his neck as if in thought. 

“Where to start, really...” 

Many things had happened while Art had been gone, but now that Hibiki was being asked to summarize all those events he didn’t really know which would be worth mentioning and which not.  

“Hmm... I can’t speak for everyone, I think, but since you left living in Toshi City has been rather peaceful? Not to suggest you were the case of any unrest or anything... And of course things have been going on, but now that you ask nothing shocking or mind-blowing comes to mind.”

Hibiki pressed his lips together as he thought a little harder about what to say. Deciding it was fine to share small news too, he opened his mouth again.

“Well, it’s not really about the others, but while you were away I moved into Clover 3. If you moved back into Clover 1 that would make us neighbors now.” Hibiki smiled at that thought. “You probably know one of the guys I’m living with? Mamoru Tsukamoto. I believe he joined the Force as a detective when you were still a part of it as well, but I can’t remember it well.”

Hibiki. This is your real dad and I and your mother no longer care a thing for what you do. You were supposed to be great but you became a disappointment instead. You have become a, meme.

“I’m hanging up.”

Typical Hibiki Kuze: saying things without even a thought of their impact.  Naoto was quite certain she would never get used to that part of him.

“………I do not think that.. would be a wise decision..”

God forbid she ended up within the confinements of Clover 3– so close to her own home, but that also meant it was dangerously close to the vast majority of people she worked with, along with the other inhabitant of Clover 3..

“I believe private matters are best kept private.. That is all..”

“Yeah, tell me about it.” 

Were Hibiki ever to take Naoto home with him, he would never hear the end of it from Kaito. Hibiki honestly had no idea why, but his roommate seemed rather interested in his love life. If Kaito was hoping to get some tips on how to swoon the ladies, Hibiki was going to have to disappoint him. 

There were no well thought out plans behind Hibiki’s interactions with Naoto. On the contrary, Hibiki only ever did things on the spur of the moment and would share literally whatever it was that was on his mind around Naoto. Which may have let to some awkward situations, yes, but if you asked Hibiki he was only being fair. Why pretend he was someone who he was not? 

But to get back on track, they were still holding a conversation. Something about private matters better being kept private?

“...I don’t really think about that kind of stuff, to be honest. When I’m with you I forget about anyone and everything else. I’m happy as long as we get to spend time together.”

Hibiki was definitely, maybe teasing Naoto. Well, no matter. After a soft, warm chuckle he let go of her, because Naoato actually had been kind of right about them being in a public space. Not that Hibiki would care if they were seen like this. Naoto on the other hand...

“Kidding aside, maybe it would be better if I only showed you affection when we would be in private, huh?”

Hibiki had a rather puzzled expression on his face when out of nowhere he was roughly pulled into a hug from behind. Confused, he struggled in the grip of his “captor” until he had freed himself enough to be able to have a look at their face. When he saw who he was dealing with, he stopped all and any resistance. 

“Yusuke…?” 

To say Hibiki was shocked to see that familiar face would be an understatement. After Yusuke’s sudden disappearance, Hibiki had thought he had seen the last of his ex-partner in (solving) crime. Seeing Yusuke now, and without have received any warning to prepare himself at that, a wide variety of emotions crossed his face until finally…

“It’s you. It really is you!” Wholeheartedly Hibiki returned the hug (to the best of his abilities in the still kind of awkward semi-turned but not completely facing each other position they were in), and patted Yusuke on the back. “Whoa, man. I’m so happy to see you! How have you been?”

♮...? Cue shy justice boy extending his arms and hugging Hibiki.

The hug Hibiki received was so gentle that he almost hadn’t realized someone had warped their arms around his waist from behind. Easily being able to move while held in such a loose embrace, Hibiki turned slightly and placed his hand on Ken’s head.

“Hey Ken. How’s it going?”

Hibiki barely suppressed a yelp when suddenly someone jumped on him from behind. A pair of short arms were wrapped around his waist more tightly than was comfortable, causing Hibiki to wheeze. He tried to see who was assaulting him, but couldn’t get a glimpse of them.

“Too t-tight! Let me go.”

Hibiki’s heart skipped a beat when out of nowhere someone wrapped their arms around his waist from behind. Being on guard all of a sudden (someone who could sneak up on him like that could potentially be dangerous!), Hibiki looked over his shoulder as well as he could to identify his “captor”. 

Upon catching a glimpse of who was hugging him from behind the tension in his shoulders eased. Unwittingly, he leaned into the touch and smiled. 

“Hey...” Hibiki greeted Naoto softly, placing his hand over hers and tenderly tracing her knuckles with his thumb. “What are you doing? Did you miss me?”

Stepping into Hibiki’s office, despite having sat here with Hibiki before to drink coffee and what-not - it looked different than the office he’d been used to before. That was probably because he was a tiny bit taller now…golly, trying to get used to and make sense of this was so strange. He still wasn’t used to registering the older face in the mirror as his own, nor was he sure where to start looking in finding out what had even CAUSED it…but such thoughts were put to the side for now. This required more attention first!

“Well…uh…you see, the thing is…” He was trailing off then, and he knew it, but the subject matter was one he could help but feel antsy on. “You…know how I call you Hibiki-san a lot? Well, after everything that happened yesterday, it made me realize something. You’ve always looked out for me and tried to teach me things in the defense force - even before that…thing yesterday. Also, the story of what happened in my case - I’ve never told anyone apart from Minako-san and Minato-san before, but you listened too, and made me feel better about how sad it is.”

A pause, the boy seeming a bit bashful there. “Oh man…I’m rambling a bit here, aren’t I? Well, to sum it up before I ramble MORE - I really look up to you, and you’re like a big brother to me now, so - so can I call you Hibiki-oneesan now? I understand if it’s a bit weird and stuff, but I’d really…like that.”

Apparently Hibiki had an office now, which had been unknown to him, but he guessed he had nothing to complain about as he seemingly had one now? Well, wherever inside headquarters this conversation took place, he was glad to see Ken was doing a little bit better. 

Hibiki listened carefully and tried to guess where this conversation was going as Ken rambled on. He couldn’t say he knew what this was about, but seeing as Ken seemed to be very excited about something he just let him finish his story. 

However, when Ken’s story reached its conclusion, Hibiki didn't know what to say. That Ken saw him as a big brother was a compliment in itself, but Hibiki didn’t know how he felt about Ken calling him Hibiki-oneesan. It wasn’t that he was against it per se. It just had an odd ring to it, which he didn’t know if he liked or not.

“Ah, uhm... I’m glad you think of me that way, happy even, but that name...” Hibiki would like to think this over, but at the same time he didn’t want to hurt Ken’s feelings. “...I’m an only child so being called brother feel really odd. Ah, but, you could try calling me that for the time being. Maybe I just need to get used to it.”

There could be no harm down in letting Ken call him Hibiki-oneesan for a while, right? If after some time it still made Hibiki feel uncomfortable he could always as Ken to start calling him just Hibiki or Hibiki-san again. Because this was something that seemed to make Ken happy, Hibiki didn’t want to shoot his request down. 

“Hibiki-oneesan it is then. Oh man, that sounds even weirder when I say it myself. Not doing that again.” Hibiki laughed.
