Do you think he had a breakdown at some point about the hugs. Rocky can’t actually hug him back. Rocky can’t hold him or touch him without hurting him. Because I’m now thinking about it. I'm thinking about him hugging rocky before just slowly tearing up and crying because he’s just… he’s not hugging rocky, he can’t feel rocky, he can't wrap his arms around his carapace and rocky can’t wrap his arms around him.

how often do you think he wondered if he actually succeeded at all? like sure, he sent the beetles, but there's no guarantee any of them made it back. there's no guarantee humanity would be in any condition to utilize them even if they did

for a very long time, there's just no way to know

at least they definitely saved Erid. at least he has Rocky, and his students, and all the Eridians he helped save. and they like him enough and are grateful enough to build and maintain a habitat for him to live in. most of the time he probably jokingly refers to it as his zoo enclosure, just to watch Rocky puff up over it

i bet he spends more than a few bad days feeling like nothing more than a lizard in a fancy little terrarium. pacing around and around that dome like the last thylacine in the Hobart zoo, convinced he failed Earth, that he's the last human left in the universe. the final entry in a long list of endlings, spending the rest of his life in gentle, loving captivity
