Perfect Planning
It's 85 degrees outside, supposed to be meeting stepdad at "halfway" point to pick up child. He called an hour ago to plan, said they were leaving right then - should be a 35ish minute drive for them. It's been an hour, they are still 20 miles away, I've been sitting in the gas station parking lot for 20 minutes already with my engine and a/c running, and it's at least another 20 minute wait. Lovely.

Last night I felt weak. everything was tough and energy draining, did not make it to accessory work, but got main lifts out of the way. Deadlift 235# 5x3 SLDL 105# 3x20 Was supposed to include some farmers walks and db rows - might look into throwing those into tonight's training. Maybe, maybe not.

Finally under 160# (half a pound, but it counts!) for a couple days now. Went back to lifting to get my body and brain and eating back under my control. Itâs been a while post treatment, so my stress has seemed to level out a bit.Â

Things / Updates
Back to powerlifting - a month and a half now. Maxed out Friday - 245# squat / 140# bench / 290# deadlift. Most of my maxes went up a little - not bad for a year+ away from lifting regularly, but my body weight went up ~15lbs too, so... Signed up for state games in July
Jiu jitsu in my free time - will roll lightly, donât want to go too hard and risk pulling something/getting injured
Kiddo got a job with the City for the summer (holy shit). He also starts driving soon (holy shit). This kind of screwed up our plans to take a yearly trip on his new birthday (2 years post transplant in June!) - but weâll try and plan a trip to Seattle in August before school starts back up.Â
Tried the Hobonichi this year for my bullet journaling. Kept it up for a few months before giving up and buying a Leuchtturm 1917. Hobonichi is now my workout log.Â
I miss having a go to place to update/journal and to see whatâs going on with everyone here. So, my goal is to be back for a little while at least. Maybe?
Things
- Still jiu jitsuing - MB just started "training" me (supersets like squats & rollouts, rows & pushups, dips & pullups, etc) - Got a raise. First one in at least three years, boss says I'm way past due & raise reflects that. I found it hard to bring it up past couple years since I was in and out of the office with Kiddo's health issues. Mom probs. - A lot more reading & less internetting. - Relationship is strong. - Kiddo is strong. Pullups & pushups every day. He went down to the basement and did a little workout with me this evening. Tried out for the basketball team beginning of November but didn't make it. I don't give a shit because my super strong badass kid made it through almost 10 hours of tryouts in less than 3 days after doing almost nothing for the past 2.5 years. Not to mention losing ALL of his muscle thanks to chemo. Oh, and having chronic lung issues. He's the best. - Started a new blog, trying to keep it up. Who knows.
I am going to start taking kickboxing classes. Because I want to get strong and also because I donât live in a city where I feel safe and comfortable walking several miles a day anymore so I need a way to stay active. The classes are free. @karlfun and I are going to start going on Saturday mornings and Monday nights. So if anyone else in Topeka wants to get swole and maybe start a girl gang, hit me up.

Meal Planning
After 16 years of trying this or that diet and reading so many articles about what you should or shouldnât eat it is making it so damn hard to meal plan meals that consist of more than just a piece of meat and a side of veggies. While logically I know there are no âgoodâ or âbadâ foods thereâs this voice going over and over through my head as I look at recipes saying â nope not that one it has a cream of whatever soup in it.â âOh you definitely canât have that, it has pasta in it.â

Way late seeing this - but simple is best. Meat and a veggie or potato. Tacos - corn shell if flour makes you anxious. If you want pasta, plan on a small amount of pasta and a meat-heavy and or cheesy sauce. Also, don't try and plan something new for every meal and every week. Consistency isn't a bad thing.
Something we've put into rotation is shells & cheese with some kind of brat or smoked sausage (I change the flavor up). I'll throw a smaller scoop (1/2-3/4 cup) of the shells in a bowl and slice up two of the sausages. Hits the spot for a pasta and hearty craving.
Another weekly favorite is steak bites (Pioneer Woman - browned butter and sliced up steak - quick and stupid easy) and her smashed potatoes.
If I want something different that stays in my general diet idea - I'll google for primal recipes. Seems to be more "real" foods than Paleo.
I started a "to try" board on Pinterest that I'll pick from if I'm at a loss. After I attempt them, the recipe either gets deleted or moved into my primal or savory boards (as applicable). Pinterest is great as a planning tool - I also have a weekly menu board that I'll pull planned recipes over to for easy access.

Yeah, it sounds like the recommendation for men is pretty recent, but I had never heard about it at all until I specifically googled it. And as someone said in the replies, apparently the recommendation for school age boys is generating the same kind of backlash that the one for girls has. God forbid we be realistic about the probability that our children will eventually become sexually active. So tell your friends! HPV vaccine for all!
Kiddo finished his last round of the HPV shots about 3 months before he was originally diagnosed with AML. I wanted to protect any future girls he'd be with.
I admit, it took me a long time to get it through my thick skull that the vaccine did NOT cause his leukemia. I knew/know better, but it's hard when you have no cause.
