i got an ask about why lena doesn't call kara by her name when she's only talking to hope and it got me thinking. lena doesnt actually know kara. she just knows shes supergirl.
i think what separates kara's identity reveal from most superhero reveals is that, kara danvers is also a disguise.
the clumsiness, pretending to be less smart, overtly cheerful demeanor is as much a disguise as kara's suit and cape. underneath it all is the girl who lost her whole world at thirteen. and that is someone lena doesn't know at all.
kara refers to herself in third person when she tells lena that she's supergirl because both kara danvers and supergirl are masks she wears. clark kent isn't a persona clark created to assimilate to human society, that is just who he is.
in the reveal, kara tells lena she 'kept pretending' because that's what she had been doing, and also why she's so afraid to tell her. she wasnt just omitting truths, she'd been someone else completely while lena bares out her soul to her best friend.
it's about the mortifying ordeal of being known.
Well said!
