I honestly don’t care if this ends up being an unpopular opinion or not, because it’s something that needs to be said.
Damon isn’t the only one in Gorillaz who feels like he needs to keep his fans happy all the time by impressing them with everything he does. We place Damon up on a pedestal because he’s the “uwu good boy” who can do no harm, but Jamie is part of Gorillaz as well.
You may be thinking: “Yeah. No shit. We know Jamie is part of Gorillaz.”
But here’s the thing - we take Jamie for granted. MAJORLY for granted.
This is the SECOND time he’s wanted to have characters talk in a music video (first being Strobelite) but couldn’t because the people above him wouldn’t allow it. He couldn’t even add a model of Russel.
He’s got fans on his Instagram pressuring him by rushing him to finish his work. They aren’t always easily impressed. Things like “when’s the music video going to be out?” and the people who say “I personally think ____ should’ve had a music video instead.”
Give the man a break. Gorillaz has ALWAYS been a collaborative project - it’s not just all about the music.
I mean, he can’t even get the rights for Ace despite wanting to use his character for so much more than a temporary Murdoc replacement.
He took on the FreeMurdoc hashtag to give the fans something interesting and to show that he does listen, he even pushed back the final chat ALMOST A MONTH to add in answers to questions that we really want.
He’s been wanting the Gorillaz cartoon from the beginning but he never had the budget to do so, which is why a lot of the earlier music videos lacked proper animation (specifically tomorrow comes today) and there’s music videos which were NEVER produced either. He had to cancel a fucking movie because there wasn’t much places that wanted to take the idea on board.
He gave us the live interviews so we could witness characters actually communicating with the real world.
Fans are still upset about where the new cartoon is - and I’d just like to say that just because the cartoon has been announced, doesn’t mean it’s ready. The original idea was for him to have the story go alongside Humanz, but he changed that for us. He wanted to give us a different story that didn’t have any specific guidelines to follow, but one that still tied in with the main story.
He’s given us documentaries, games and he’s the co-creator of the best virtual band TO DATE… and much more.
And yet… somehow he still goes underappreciated. You know why Jamie was invited onto stage during the performance? Because he’s a part of this as well - and we treat him like he’s just the guy who draws the characters.
When it comes to who to pick on, Jamie seems to be the fan favourite. We put bullshit on him as well, but the difference between Jamie and Damon, is that Jamie’s struggles seem to go unnoticed.
Jamie has always wanted to give us his best. I have full faith that he will deliver. It doesn’t have to be an instantaneous thing, because a piece of art takes time. Literally and metaphorically.
