Simon's apartment was normally peaceful, a quiet and serene getaway from the chaos of life outside of his four walls.
His peace, however, was nowhere to be found tonight.
His old team, formerly known as Task Force 141, had come over to watch a football game and catch up on their lives, which had grown now that they weren't getting shipped off on dangerous missions every few weeks. Currently, Simon had a paper plate full of food resting on his lap and holding a can of soda in his free hand while his other hand carded through Riley's fur. He was recommended an emotional support animal after he left the military and was a bit resistant to the idea at first, but after visiting a nearby animal shelter and seeing Riley there, he ended up adopting the pup and bringing him home.
After a few minutes, though, Riley was bribed away by Soap, who was waving a chicken wing in Riley's direction with a mischievous grin on his face. Simon rolled his eyes and tried to focus back in on the game, but unfortunately, his friends decided to not grant him any peace tonight.
"So, Simon. You seem to be…lighter lately." Price had a knowing smile on his lips as he looked over at the masked man. Simon let out a grunt, keeping his eyes glued to the TV and trying to avoid the plummeting feeling in his stomach. He didn't want to give up the private little piece of his brain (and heart) that contained the woman and her son who continued to visit his butcher shop frequently with smiles that seemed to be just as warm as their hearts. It made him look forward to opening up shop on Fridays, knowing that they would show up after the little one's school got out.
He was a man who hadn’t been able to have much in his life, and he wasn't willing to let life rip this good thing out of his hands too.
"I think yeh got your head hit one too many times, Captain." Simon said, crossing his arms as he replied to the mustached man, his eyes narrowing behind his mask.
"Nah, I think he's right, mate. Yeh do seem different." Soap grinned at Simon, propping his chin up on his fist. "I think he's got a bird that he doesn't want us to know about."
Simon whipped his head around to glare at the Scottish man, gritting his teeth. "Shut yer trap, McTavish." He hissed out between clenched teeth. He felt like he was a cat being cornered and was about ready to swipe his claws at his friends if they kept pushing.
Gaz chuckled, plopping down beside Simon on the couch. "Easy, guys. Poor bloke looks like he's about ready to throw himself out the window any moment if we keep pushing it." Simon glanced over at Gaz and gave him a small appreciative nod. The other two settled down after Gaz's comment; the conversation seemed to return to normal, and the attention settled back onto the football game.
After a little while longer, he felt the itch to smoke begin to scratch at the back of his mind and decided he needed a break from the chaos of his mates and the game for a few minutes. He groaned as he got up off the couch; muscles and joints that had been abused on countless missions now felt like stiff rubber bands as he stretched his limbs out.
"Headin' outside for a baccy." He grumbled to his mates, grabbing the cigarette pack off of the side table and a random lighter and headed out the door into the cool night air. He allowed himself to pause and take a deep breath, letting his muscles relax.
He rolled up the edge of his mask, just until his lips and nose were visible before placing the cigarette between his lips. He was about to light the end when he saw a figure out of the corner of his eye. The figure was a woman on her phone, and he could hear voices from both sides, but one was soft and stern and the other…
The other voice sounded exactly the same as his father when he was angry.
It made his blood run cold, turning his thoughts more towards listening in on the conversation and trying to understand what was being said by both parties.
"You know you're not supposed to contact me directly; you're supposed to contact me through my lawyer!" The woman paused, listening to the yelling on the other end. Her body language was tense, and her shoulders were shaking as if she were crying or holding back anger. From the way it sounded like the conversation was going, perhaps both.
"No, you will contact my lawyer. I never want to see your face again, and our- no. My son doesn't need to be anywhere near you! My son and I deserve better, and you deserve to rot in a prison cell for the rest of your life!" Simon watched as the woman hung up on the man's screaming voice and let her hand drop to her side. Her shoulders were shaking even more now, her hands coming up to cover her face as quiet sobs came from her form.
Simon felt slightly awkward, feeling like he had just intruded on something highly personal that he shouldn't have been listening in on. He cleared his throat softly as he approached, hesitantly reaching out to the woman. "Ma'am…? Are yeh alright?"
The woman turned to face him, and he felt like a bucket of ice had been dumped on him. There she was, the woman who had been haunting his thoughts the past few weeks. Her cheeks were damp with tears and her eyes glistening in the moonlight, and her face was flushed in anger and shame.
"S-Simon…?" She croaked out, quickly wiping her face and eyes with the backs of her hands to rid herself of the dampness on her face. "W-What are y-you doing out here?"
"I came out for a smoke, but I saw yeh on the phone. I didn't realize yeh were 'ere, luv." Simon responded, being sure to keep his tone gentle. Well, as gentle as his rough voice could get. He didn't want to scare the poor bird; she was already shaken up as it was, and he couldn't blame her. He wished he could simply take her in his arms and tell her that he would never treat her or her son like that, and he would rather carve out his own heart than let anything hurt them again.
"I-I'm so sorry you had to hear that…" She hiccuped, avoiding Simon's gaze. He shook his head, tilting her chin up gently with his fingers and watching her shiver slightly at the contact.
"No luv, yeh don't have to feel ashamed. Not wi' me. Yeh don't deserve to be spoken to like tha', yeh hear me?" He made sure to keep eye contact and searched her eyes for any sign that she understood his words. "Yeh don't have to tell me now, but if yeh need to talk abou' what happened, 'm all ears. "
She sniffled, wiping her face once more as she took in a shaky breath. "M-my ex-husband, somehow he got ahold of my new number and called me in a rage…he's still furious about the divorce and that I got custody of our son. He was told he could only contact me through my lawyer, but you can see how well he listened to that…" She let out a chuckle, but it wasn't a humorous one. It was a tired, exhausted laugh, one where it seemed like the weight of the entire world was on her shoulders. Perhaps to her, it really was.
"I couldn't keep nugget there; I couldn't do that to him. He was only violent with me, but the thought of him turning on him and going after him too-" Her breathing was becoming erratic, and Simon quickly pulled her into his arms without thinking, rubbing a large hand up and down her back and shushing her gently.
"It's okay, luv. Yer 'ere away from 'im, yer son is safe, yer safe." He said quietly. The warmth of her in his arms felt so right, but he didn't want to put how he was feeling ahead of what she was feeling and needing to be there for her. If she was falling apart, he would be there to hold all of her broken pieces together.
Simon let her cry into his chest for quite a while, shushing her softly and continuing to rub his hand in circles between her shoulder blades. After a little bit, her sobs turned to sniffles, and she was able to pull her head back to look at him. Her eyes were definitely puffy now, but he still thought she was gorgeous even like this.
"There we go, luv. Yeh feel better now?" He asked her softly, receiving a small nod in response.
"Yes, thank you. I'm so sorry you had to see me like this…I really appreciate you listening to me."
"Hey, yeh don't need to apologize to me, not one bit. Yer so strong taking care of your son by yourself every day and having to deal with tha' ba- with that jerk. Yer working and doing a great job."
She gave him a small, genuine smile and the tightness in his chest loosened up, feeling like he could breathe easier now that she was smiling again.
"H-How come you're at this building, Simon?" She asked, seeming to want to change the subject.
"Ah, I live in tha' apartment back there." He pointed at his door that was just a few paces away from where they were both standing. Her eyebrows lifted, a shocked expression on her face.
"No way! I live in the apartment beside yours! The door with the little plant outside!" She was quick to point at the door to the right of Simon's, and indeed there was a little potted plant he had never noticed before.
"Wha' are the odds then?" He chuckled, smiling down at her. It was then they both seemed to realize that she was still in Simon's arms. She let out a little squeak and slightly scrambled back, cheeks flushed. "I-I'm sorry, I-I'd better check on my son and make sure he's okay! H-Have a good night, Simon!"
Simon watched her quickly retreat into her apartment, still feeling her warmth that had soaked into his hoodie. His own face was warm beneath the mask, but a big smile was on his lips. He no longer needed his cigarette after that, shoving it back into the case and stepping back into his apartment.
He could feel his mate's eyes bore holes into him as he stepped back into the apartment, their gaze continuing to follow him until he sat back down on the couch.
Soap was the first one to speak, one eyebrow raised. "Tha' was an awfully long smoke break, L.T. Yeh run into a burglar or somethin'?"
"My bet's on chatting up a pretty bird." Price said, a grin on the ex-captain's lips.
"I think he needed a break from all of our noise. It has been a while since we've been able to let loose like this." Gaz chuckled, continuing to watch Simon's expression.
Simon ignored all of their comments, his heart full. The gentle woman lived right next door to him, and he was going to make sure that absolutely no harm would come to her or her son. He also had an excuse to see her more often now, and he wasn't going to let this chance slip through his fingers.

pt.1 pt.3
Simon was cleaning his knives and equipment late one Friday afternoon, still thinking about that mother and child that came into the shop last week and those smiles that had begun to melt the hardened wall around his heart. He shook his head slightly as if he could simply shake away the thoughts of the two from his mind. Simon was sure that she was married, though he didn't get a glimpse of a ring on her left ring finger. There was no way a sweet bird like her wasn't married though, especially with a son.
He was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the bell above his door ring out, alerting him to customers. Setting his equipment aside, he turned to face whoever came into his shop, and as soon as he caught a glimpse of their face, his heart stopped for a split second.
There she was. Her smile was just as bright as before, but this time, it reached her eyes a little more. He looked down and saw her son standing there too, his little chest puffed out with pride and a grin on his face. Pinned on his jacket was a blue ribbon that had a gold '#1!' on the white part and had become slightly crooked from movement.
"Mister Simon, look! I won an award at school today!" He pulled his jacket out more to bring it upwards to show Simon better, even though he could already see it well enough. Simon let out a chuckle that vibrated through his chest, and he smiled slightly behind his mask.
"Congratulations, champ. Wha' did yeh win it for?" He asked, leaning forward over the counter to easily talk with the little boy.
"I won it for art! We had a compi- compototion?" The little boy's eyebrows furrowed as he tried to get the word out, his face scrunching in frustration.
"Competition, nugget." The woman's voice was gentle as she corrected her son, smiling at him as she fixed his mussed-up hair.
"Yeah, competition!" He cheered, the bright smile coming back to his face after she told him the word he was looking for. "My teacher told me that my drawing was the best and- and she gave me this ribbon!"
Simon's eyebrows raised enough to go underneath his mask slightly, eyes crinkled with a smile as he nodded. "Sounds like yeh have somethin' to celebrate then, huh?"
The woman nodded, looking up at Simon. "Yes, I told him that we could celebrate tonight and that I would cook him whatever he wanted for dinner. He decided he wanted hamburger steak, so could I please get a pound of ground chuck? I have more on me this time, I promise." She let out an awkward little chuckle, but Simon immediately caught onto the anxiety and embarrassment behind the laugh.
Simon nodded, changing into a fresh pair of gloves. "I gotcha, luv. One pound o' ground chuck."
Grabbing the chuck she wanted, he began to grind fresh meat for them. He told himself it was because he needed to grind some anyway for grab-and-go packages, but deep within his heart, he knew that the true reason was that he had a soft spot for this mother and son.
He measured out the chuck before hesitating for a split second. Making up his mind, he discreetly added more into the package after printing out the sticker for the package and sticking it on so she would be none the wiser about what he had done for them. Turning around, he gently placed the package onto the counter.
"Tha' 'll be 5.19, luv." Simon watched as she pulled out her wallet and grabbed a £10 bill, but he could see the calculations going on behind her eyes. His heart ached for her, and he was glad that he had decided on giving her a little extra. He gently took the money from her hand and allowed their fingers to brush against each other. He glanced down inconspicuously at her hand to see if there was a ring on her finger or not, and his heart skipped when he saw no band circling her ring finger.
Simon quickly got her change and handed it back to her, giving her a slight nod as he did so. She smiled that gentle smile at him again, and he noticed the flush on her cheeks as well, a small bit of pride flaring in his chest.
"Thank you, Simon. Also, I wanted to thank you for the instructions last time! The fish turned out so flavorful, and your instructions were well written! I might need to shoot you a text if something goes wrong with any other meat dishes, though." She said, letting out a shy laugh.
Was…
Was she flirting with him?
Oh, he hoped so, stunned into silence for a moment. He cleared his throat, adjusting the mask over his face. "Yeah, yeah, I'd be more tha' happy to. Jus' let me know."
"Well, we'd better head home so I can start working on that hamburger steak for nugget here." She motioned to the little boy who was fiddling with the ribbon on his jacket with a proud little smile on his face.
"C'mon nugget, let's go home." She said softly, holding out her hand to the boy who immediately latched on.
"Thank you, Mr. Simon!" He chirped. "I'm going to eat lots and lots of mommy's yummy hamburger steak!"
Simon nodded. "A growin' boy needs his protein. Congratulations again, kiddo."
"Thanks again, Simon. See you later!" She called out as she and her son walked out of the shop, and Simon kept his eyes trained on them both until they were out of sight once more.
He let out a sigh, rubbing a hand over his face. 'Get it together, mate.'
He really hoped she'd reach out to him soon.

a/n: This is my first 'x reader' and it has been a long time since I have written fanfiction! I really hope you guys enjoy and let me know if you might want a pt 2!
pt.2 pt.3
"Mommy, I wan' food, 'm hungry…" A small boy pouted beside his mother as his little hand gripped her larger one tightly as they walked the streets of Manchester. His mother smiled gently at the young boy over her scarf, giving his hand a small squeeze.
"Don't worry, we'll be able to eat dinner soon. We just need to go to the butchers and pick up the meat we'll have for dinner tonight that will go with all the yummy vegetables we got!" She said, holding up the grocery bag from the small market they had stopped at after she had picked him up from school.
When her son turned his face away to look at the street once more, she let her smile falter just a smidge. Ever since she and her son's father got a divorce and she had taken on sole custody, it had been difficult to try and make all of their ends meet with her sole income. Their apartment was sparsely furnished, their fridge was becoming dangerously empty, and he was growing so fast that she was having a hard time affording bigger clothes for him to grow into. Even with all these hardships, she would rather face these head-on than put herself and her son back into that situation of late-night arguments, bruises, and broken beer bottles.
After crossing a few more streets, they had arrived at their destination: a small butcher's shop tucked away off of the main street. Pushing the door open, a small bell merrily rang out, announcing their entrance. Behind the counter stood a mammoth of a man, standing at what she guessed was several inches over six feet tall, sleeves rolled up to show arms that looked like trunks covered in tattoos, and what stood out the most was a skull mask that covered his entire face, minus his eyes and the bridge of his nose.
"Wha' can I get yeh, luv?" The deep rumble of his voice was intimidating, but oddly soothing at the same time. She took a moment to reach into her pocket and pull out the few coins she had left after their venture to the market, rubbing over them lightly with her thumb.
"Um, whatever is cheapest is fine." She gently placed the coins onto the counter as her son began to pull at her sleeve and whine that he wanted to be picked up. "Sorry, it's all I have on me right now."
Simon glanced down at the coins and then back at the woman holding the small child within her arms as she tried to get him to quiet down. He noticed how the boy's shoes were beginning to look worn and how his jacket was starting to become frayed and small. Looking back at the woman, he noticed how tired her eyes looked, how gentle she was with her son. He let out a soft grunt as he took the coins off of the counter, turning to his meat selection.
Normally, he didn't do this for customers, but it looked like those two could use a helping hand. He picked up a salmon and cut off a larger chunk, setting it on the scale and acting like everything was normal so as not to allow the woman to think he was merely pitying them. Once he took the fish off the scale, he wrapped it up and slid the wrapped package over to her.
"Mister, your mask is so cool!" The little boy was practically starry-eyed as he stared up at him, which took Simon by surprise. Usually, people were intimidated by his mask and tried to avoid commenting about it as much as possible.
The woman smiled at her son and then turned that sweet, soft smile towards Simon. "Thank you so much, Mr…?"
"Simon." His voice was gruff, but that smile…that smile made his heart feel like it was beating 1,000 miles an hour. She gave him a nod and carefully placed the fish into her bag, adjusting her son in her arms to reach.
"Could you also tell me the best way to prepare this? I want to make sure that I have the ingredients to cook this properly. Don't want to give this one a stomach ache because I cooked it wrong." She gently shook her son in her arms, causing him to giggle as he jostled around.
Simon nodded and grabbed a piece of spare paper and a pencil, jotting down the best way to cook the fish while telling her the instructions at the same time. He paused for a moment when he finished writing out the recipe before quickly writing his phone number before he regretted it.
"Phone number's on there, 'case yeh ha' any questions about 'ow to cook it." He nodded to the paper as she took it, a flush coming to his cheeks that was thankfully hidden by his mask.
A flush came to her cheeks as well, a color that made her already brilliant smile even more beautiful. It was like seeing the sun after a long time of rain and feeling the warmth shine through.
"Thank you again, Mr. Simon." She said softly.
He shook his head at her. "Please, jus' Simon. None o' that Mr. nonsense."
"Well, we'd better get going. This little one keeps complaining about being hungry, so we'd better take care of that, huh?" The little boy waved as he was carried out of the shop by his mother, the same bright smile as his mother on his face.
"Bye bye, Mr. Simon!" He called out as his mother stepped back out into the cold winter air, waving until they were no longer in sight.
A small smile came to his lips once they had gone.
He hoped they would come back soon.
