lol and like i hate to be so usa centric and shit but like 1) i live in america and 2) sadly this country is no stranger to gun violence but ANYWAY it’s so ugly how we can’t grieve our tragedies here without europeans or anyone not from america laughing at us, we can’t talk about healthcare, the fact that our government is currently in the worst election year in decades, the fact that children, black people and non black people of color, and people of all sexualities and genders are being fucking murdered because of gun violence without someone using it as an opportunity to laugh at our pain about how out of control out gun laws are, we are perfectly aware of how terrible these laws are, us civilians are the ones dying because of them so please stop laughing at us as if WE OURSELVES can just find The Rule Book and erase the standing gun laws, let us fucking mourn please

Like so many music fans, we’re reeling from the news that musician Gord Downie, the Tragically Hip’s lead singer-songwriter, has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

With 14 Juno Awards and nine number 1 albums in Canada, the Tragically Hip has been a mainstay of this country’s music scene for more than three decades; it’s a member of our musical family.

Along with the terrible news of Downie’s illness came the inspirational announcement of a final concert tour. While we look ahead to that, and all the conflicting emotions it will encompass, we’re also taking a moment to reflect on our favourite Tragically Hip songs.

My family comes from a small town in Canada.  When I say small, I mean really  small, something like 500 people who move in and out depending on the seasons.

When I was growing up, I was embarrassed at the lack of distinction my town had.  I thought we had nothing, no culture to speak of and nothing really to offer.  I longed to move to a city like NYC, London (England, that is) or Paris.  Somewhere where they had something more than slightly grainy footage of Hockey Night in Canada.

There were two pubs across the street from each other in this town.  Both had live music.  These pubs would play your usual pub classics but when the night really got going, they would inevitably play The Hip.  Everyone would stop their conversations cold, no longer willing to shout above the stories.  Instead, they would sing along with the band, knowing every word, no matter how deep of a cut the song was.  When that band would finish, you could hear the pub across the street cheer for a band they could just barely hear but it didn’t matter, because they all knew the song anyway.

It was in those pubs that I discovered that we had a unique culture all of our own and only one band has ever been truly able to capture that.  I found my love for my hometown and the country I love, one I could never even dream of leaving for all of the big cities in the world.

The Tragically Hip is more than just a band to a lot of us, they have been our poets and our historians.  They’ve ensured that our stories of the Summit Series and Leaf games have been documented.  They’ve given us the soundtrack to pub nights, dock parties and long weekends.  For that, I could never thank them enough.

My thoughts are with Gord, his family and The Hip.  The news is hard but I just wanted to say thanks for the music.  Thanks for the tours.  Thanks for teaching me more about my country than any history book has.  Thanks for never forgetting where you come from and giving us all something to be proud of.  Can’t wait to see you boys this summer.  I’m sure it’ll be a tour none of us will forget.
