The new Tumblr cleaner can automatically change the url and avatar of reds in reblog chains to look like deactivated blogs instead, and you choose the percentage red commenters at which you’d rather just block the post.

Are you fine with ex-reds and just want to avoid actual trash? Every filtering option can be set separately for reds and ex-reds, so it’s easy to filter only current reds, if you’re adventurous enough for that :p

Our code for determining if a blog is red or ex-red makes use of fancy new computer science, but of course algorithms aren’t as good as real Amentans. That’s why we have a corps of volunteers helping out whenever the computer isn’t 100% sure, so we can make sure we never misclassify a blog.

It would probably be pathetic if I sent her a letter and apologized and begged her to take me back. I should not do that.

I might miss having her almost as much as I miss her for herself as my friend and partner, now that I no longer do. She knew what my springs were like and how to avoid everything that felt disgusting.

The feelings I have toward the people I meet on spring apps feel so empty and flat by comparison. I am not good at meeting people and liking them. I have been at the same job with the same coworkers for years, and with most of them I am at most “friendly acquaintances”. In the end, I am not actually particularly interesting or desirable, and am too picky for this to work well with people who don’t mind.

I have recently been playing a lot of Slugarium. It’s very cute. I’m on my second tank, and am really enjoying balancing frog, slug, and snail populations so that the tank stays clean and nothing gets overpopulated or inbred, while still maximizing my profits. Quite often, my frogs are not smart enough to notice that I have dropped food in front of them, and starve to death. Sometimes, I put out one of the moon-potions to turn a frog into a moon frog with more valuable eggs, and then one of the tadpoles rushes in front of the frog to eat the potion and dies. I would like if there were a mode I could play with the population and disease balancing, but without monsters growing out of the bottom of the tank and needing to be dissolved before they can eat my fish.

Overall it is a good everything game, though, and I am glad I found it.

I’m so confused by people who think we should have ex-reds continue doing redwork. I get it, I’m not thrilled about them joining my caste either, but –

– that is literally how we got reds in the first place.

If we get all the reds clean the absolute last thing we should do is have them go on doing redwork! Honestly! Think things through!

The most important difference between now and in the past when the red caste was initially formed is that now we have plastic, and much better decontamination procedures, so that clean people can safely do polluted work. Reds are already less sensitive to pollution, so redwork with proper protection is much less ambiently unpleasant for them than it is for most mesosensitive people. If there are no reds doing redwork, than the most popular system for dealing with redwork seems to be the Orvaran system, which seems to involve the exact same thing except happening to purples who will suffer more from the work.

Some reds are approximately already members of other castes, because apparently there were red-specializing doctors and delivery-people and such as a result of clean specialists being unwilling to enter their districts. I think it’s acceptable that they are being integrated into the castes they already have some training and selection to be members of. Even if the fields suffer somewhat for the integration of less-selected members, it’s our collective duty to cope with that as the price for the nonviolent cleaning of the world. However, most reds are actually specialized toward redwork. The red caste is not purely defined by pollution! Castes don’t nonviolently stop existing just because it might be politically and logistically convenient for them to!

You can take a toilet-scrubbing brush and make it clean. You can replace all its bristles, scrub all the tiny bits of grime out from around the handle grip, boil it with a ton of soap, sterilise it and give it a month long shower.

It is now a clean toilet brush. It isn’t a crown or a spade or a pen or a microscope. It might be clean enough to brush your teeth with, but it’d be very impractical to fit it in your mouth.

It’d be stupid to call it polluted, but it would be stupider to call it a gun and carry it into battle expecting it to keep you alive. You’d die and then people would laugh at your corpse.

There are some objects that are used in polluted situations and also non-polluted situations, and something that has been polluted but is now clean and does work well enough for other purposes, and I suppose there’s no reason they shouldn’t be used for other purposes.

If you have a bathroom-specific tool, it does not make sense to use it as a walking-cane and use a toothbrush to clean your bathroom? Although if said object is not actually polluted, and is capable of preferences, it should be allowed outside the bathroom, rather than necessitating an entire extra copy of every object that you need in every room that is not allowed to leave the bathroom.

Giving up the metaphor, some reds are apparently not actually trained in redwork and instead are only capable of trying to make up for the lack of any other castes in red districts. However, it is obviously ridiculous to retrain actual redwork-trained clean-reds to do the jobs of other castes, rather than having them continue to do redwork but without pollution. Especially given that this necessitates having mesosensitive non-reds without a life of experience in redwork do any necessary redwork instead.

Are you referring to the fact that they’ll be two very soon, and thus lose the automatic adoration of adults that they’ve become accustomed to? Goodness, we all went through that, and we turned out perfectly fine, didn’t we?

You know what bugs me?

Useless land - land that’s been overfarmed till the soil’s dead, played out mines, deserts - can be effectively and cheaply turned into nice green wilderness for almost no money if you wait few years after dumping a bunch of compostables on them and then leave (maybe there’s other steps, I don’t know).  Biyan did this kind of out of necessity during their long crisis and some greens are following up now.  If you do all your carbon sequestration paperwork it could be net positive on money after a few years!

But it does take a while, and there’s an intermediate stage where it’s rotting and sludgy and and full of flies, so… nobody… does it, pretty much ever.  It’d be outright illegal to do it near anywhere anyone was living, but there’s plenty of places remote enough that it wouldn’t count as befouling living space, and still no one does it because no one wants to cover their land in fly sludge.  There’s been vague talk of doing some kind of net thing to keep the flies off but it’s reasonably likely that it just wouldn’t work, if you kept out the detrivores, and the net thing makes it expensive and means people have to hang out near the compost setting it up, and long story short no one does it that way either.

There’s land we could be farming that’s going unused, not useful as anything but a token of speculation, because people can’t get over themselves.

Once all the reds are cleaned, and the procedure has been modified to be a little bit less miserable and intense, everyone else should also get cleaned.

There’s always background pollution, but it would be nice to know that none of it is hereditary. If nothing else, it took a while for the caste system as it currently is to be solidified, and it would be nice to know that nobody was still even slightly polluted by an ancestor being a proto-red, if we can. It’s not like there will be much other use for the facilities, and I think most of the cost was in their construction and testing?

It makes sense to integrate the ex-reds who were doing jobs of approximately other castes, except specifically for red districts. But redworker reds are presumably actually better at red jobs than distressed members of other castes.

I think it would be better to integrate the ex-reds who do cleanwork, let the ex-reds move out of the districts and clean the districts, and then continue to have red be the caste for dealing with pollution, but no longer the hereditary pollution caste. Reds and ex-reds are on average much less pollution-sensitive than always-clean people, and already have experience and culture about dealing with pollution. Red is also a caste, not just a linguistic marker for people with hereditary pollution. We have a way to get rid of hereditary pollution, but the caste Red still exists.

That’s a good point, but you’re forgetting that a lot of ex-reds are understandably worried about being the targets of violence from people who aren’t quite so convinced by the “ex” part, and want to protect themselves by concealing their birth caste. Retaining any sort of red caste would make them a target of hatred and discrimination—just because the government insists it’s all fine now and they’re clean doesn’t mean everyone will just accept it, or that generations of discrimination will go away overnight now there’s no reason for it.

That’s unfortunate, and hopefully could be combated to some extent by the integration of the approximately-cleanworker ex-reds, the cleaning of the districts, the integration of reds into living areas outside of districts. Allowing non-red people to do red-work with appropriate decontamination, up to the limit of OOCI caps would also probably help.

Obviously crimes against nonpolluted-reds would need to be appropriately prosecuted, but we should not dissolve a caste just to prevent crimes against its members! I do not think anyone seriously suggests letting poor purples who think they are good at art take aptitude tests and become green because they live in neighborhoods with a high risk of mugging, for example.

That is literally the reason why I did not get a permission this year and my best friend broke up with me!

I am in my own apartment again. I have been living here a while, but I have changed things enough that it is mine now. Everything is where I decided to put it, and nothing is moved from where it is supposed to be.

I’ve been uncomfortably avoiding my coworker who got the baby, but they are very excited and I am trying to be happy or at least apathetic for them.

It is rather disconcerting to go from socially interacting with five people (including myself) regularly for fun to one. I think the most recent consensus was that trying to befriend people on the subway is wrong, and I think I am too competitive and formal with my coworkers to try to befriend any of them. I am not very good at this.

Thank you to the people who have anonymously sent me kind messages. I feel like responding further to them would be dishonest given my current feelings, but I appreciate them nonetheless.
