Goodbye and Goodnight

When I started this year, I think I wanted my goals to be to understand what I find inspiring to me, what style I identify with most and what I enjoy doing. I think these objectives for the most part have been addressed. I've discovered what inspires me as well as discovering how much I love using my hands with my work in a physical space. Communication Design really opened me up to this through collage. It wasn't really something that I had done in the past nor in my projects, however it really made me think differently about all the creative directions collage can take. I think overall a great source of inspiration in this course came from the Art Book Fair early in the semester. Seeing all those creatives as well as being exposed to a variety of impressive styles really got gears moving in my head to properly define what inspires me. Learning about Bauhaus always moves and inspires me, especially about the tenacity the group had at that time in Germany to spread their ideas to the world. I had a lot of fun in these classes this semester and felt like I definitely learnt a lot.

Final Layout!

I am happy with my final layout as I feel it communicates the characteristics of Jess’ work. The abstract ways the images have been cropped resemble the forms of her jewellery and the choice of typeface reflects the bold nature of her pieces. The placement of type and its offsets also demonstrates the quirkiness of her designs. Overall it is able to display the minimal approach Jess has taken towards her jewellery creation, through the use of 2 materials and pastel block colours.

I am really pleased with how my final piece turned out. I enjoyed the hand crafted aspect that I did with the first assignment for this class, and am glad that I got to get my hands dirty again on this one so to speak. Andys suggestion of actually putting more physically elements in the Zine really sold the look of an actual, tangible, used notebook. The meta nature that the look of the book took on I think worked well and is a conceptual idea that I personally always find interesting how it is self referential. Pleased to have done this assignment, sad to see it go.

Assessment 2: Ask Me Anything

This project featured an interview with Canadian composer Kris Maddigan, known for his work in the 2017 video game, Cuphead. The game was heavily inspired by the animation of the 1930′s, and emulates their subversive and surrealist qualities. Maddigan wrote and composed over 4 hours of music for the soundtrack, including various styles such as swing, big band and ragtime.

The process of creating the vinyl and it’s sleeve was challenging, but also highly rewarding. The cover art features a hand-drawn illustration of mine, featuring myself and Maddigan flying in a propeller plane (a vehicle used in the game). This was coloured in Photoshop, as I discovered through research that this was the same process the developers of the game used for their animation. The back design was set out compositionally like an actual record, using the Q&A’s of the interview to serve as the song titles and their lyrics. The vinyl sleeve was then assembled to the right specifications.

Overall, I am happy with the presentation of the project to reflect my chosen creative. What started out as a slightly daunting assessment resulted in a unique and fun way to conduct an interview. Being a big fan of the game, it was an enjoyable creative experience to work in the style of Cuphead, and I am grateful to Kris for allowing me to have a deeper understanding of this format.

Supreme releases an apparel-and-skate-deck collection designed by Alessandro Mendini, who exhibited in the first Memphis show.

When I had shown Andy the layout on the screen in Illustrator, he mentioned that I could add some more depth to it to help the layout come out of the page more. I used different coloured Tapes over pictures and text to add some colour and texture, as well as staples and paper clips. This physical element helps sell the look of a genuine note book. I also included copies of my annotations in the margins. This was to help create the meta look and provide some slight humor in writing about how I'm going to do my final Assignment.

This is an initial print out of my questions and answers email for my piece. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the annotations for the initial ideas would provide great aesthetic for the final piece. This adds an interesting meta aspect to the Zine. That the final Zine itself is meant to look like my initial planning and notes for how to make the final Zine.

The layout for the Zine on the InDesign document was a trickey process. I had used a similar template for Zines before, however the base aesthetic of using a Composition Book as a background proved to be where the problem lied. At first the lines on the pages weren't matching up well, but then after playing around with InDesign more everything fit well enough and actually helped contribute to the overall look of the Composition Book, as these printing and layout mishaps are common in them.

After consulting with Andy in our final week, I had an clear idea of how I was going to represent the interview. My Interviewee gave me a quote about how technology is a "void of uniqueness culture and novelty", and I thought that the quote could be an interesting way to play off and represent in the interview. The overall idea is creating a Zine that appears to be majorly hand done, but in reality is done on a computer.

In the most recent class we continued our workshops on Zines. After considering and experiencing this form of communication, I think a Zine is definitely the way to go for conveying the interview. The other day I had an epiphany about how to represent my interview and that it can be done through a Zine format.

As the deadline for the interview looms on the horizon, we did another skill building session focusing on Collage. I don't think my final interview piece will be utilising this medium, but the session was quite a good one. After a busy week this was a nice pace to go at in a class, not to mention I got to seek out letter forms harkening back to a previous class I sadly missed. My interviewee responded to my question a few days ago, so it's time to comb through it to see how the Q&A format can best be done.

This week was all about skill building, specifically Zines. I have learnt and made a few Zines as previous projects but was unaware of the diversity of the craft. Learning how to bind small booklets was interesting to do and definitely has made me consider the form of my final AMA project

This time we try to find 26 letters in RMIT in peers. This an interesting activity because we are not sitting in the classroom but we are hanging around in our campus. We find letters on the wall~ door~ ground~ It also help us look things in different ways.

I, unfortunately, couldn't make it to this class last week and I'm cut that I missed this. This exercise seemed like a bit of fun going around the campus to find  letter forms in the architecture of RMITs building. Really interesting to see everyones interpretations of the letters.
