I fucking hate this picture and everything it represents. Steve McCurry made millions off of this picture and its what launched his photojournalism career into the spotlight. While the woman in this picture got absolutely NOTHING and lived an awful and horrific existence. And calling her “Afghan Girl” is so disrespectful. Her name is Sharbat Gula and her life could have been made 1000X easier had McCurry shared his wealth with her - or even if he couldn’t find her, to share it with of refugees who he exploited. And honestly the idea of a white man going into wartorn nations (that are that way bc of american imperialism) to take pictures of refugees to profit off of their pain and trauma is gross

There’s a long history of this in photojournalism. This photo, who made the photographer so famous they are in every art history book, has a similar story about its subject.

The photographer of this photo, “Migrant Mother”, was Dorothea Lange and the migrant mother was Florence Owen Thompson. While Lange had quite a social justice streak, the photo was seen as a curse by Thompson who never saw any wealth from her image until her family desperately solicited donations before her death in the 1980s.

This kind of “documentary” photography is not just imperialistic, but also class based. Lange was of a different social class, attending Columbia University and traveling the world even during the great depression. While she wanted to affect social change, including photographing the internment of the Japanese during WWII in America, she was not interested in socialist or class based movements and instead felt the need to use these images to shame the public and politicians, but not provide any impetus to change any of the existing power structures and, much like many social justice liberals today, her work comes from a worldview where society needs to be managed, not altered.

These images are insidious, in their own way, because they have the air of altruism and education about them, but have no rejection of the status quo that caused those situations to begin with. Instead these women who are subjects of the photograph become symbolized. Thompson in particular became the symbol of “migrant mother strength”, as opposed to questioning why she needed that strength to begin with.

Fun fact: Egyptian gods do not have ‘animal heads’. The depictions of gods are meant to contain a duality, as is important in Egyptian Religion (life/death, red land/black land, chaos/order, human/animal). So when you see, say, Anubis with a man’s body and a Jackal head it represents both his human form and his Jackal form, meaning he might appear in either form. But never as a human with a Jackal head. That is only something you’d see on temple walls for the duality aspect.

People keep asking who would do all the menial jobs if they didn’t have the threat of starvation hanging over their heads, but in my experience there are plenty of people who would be overjoyed to spend all day running minor errands for folks if they were allowed to tell the rude ones to fuck off.

If money wasn’t a problem, I actually enjoy the physical labor of my job and the sense of fulfillment at having something concrete I can look at and accomplish—it’s the being treated like a vending machine/punching bag while also making barely liveable wages that make the whole thing suck, not the work itself

I really enjoyed the tetris like feel of bagging groceries and stocking shelves for years. What wore me down was the inconsistent hours, bad pay, poor treatment of workers overall (they treated the elderly employees especially horribly) and nasty customers who I couldn’t tell off. 

For more pay, and more protection, I’d have happily stayed for a while longer.

The degradation of these jobs and the workers who do them is artificial and deliberate, made to justify the low wages and help reinforce the system that keeps people doing them despite said degradation.

It is entirely possible to create workspaces where the people who do these jobs are treated well, valued, allowed comfort and boundaries. This is a thing we can do.

I got up at 4am to do the receiving and merchandizing at a bookstore for YEARS. I loved it. We didn’t get paid enough, and we didn’t get enough hours. We DID have a great benefits package, but even that wasn’t sustainable.
