Hence, the California legislature passing the "Stop Nick Shirley" bill.
I thought this seemed pretty implausible so I looked it up and nope! It's real. I would have thought people would notice when their coverage ran out, but Medicare coverage never runs out. Apparently 18% of all hospice care billing in the US comes from Los Angeles County alone.
Gov. Newsom's response is funny to me. "You won't hear this on FAUX NEWS, but actually California has the hugest task force to fight hospice fraud and we've uncovered so many cases of hospice fraud and we've completely stopped issuing licenses for new hospice centers, so California doesn't have a hospice fraud program at all!" Dude all those things are indications of your massive, gargantuan fraud problem!
And yes, it does in fact appear that when someone talked about this extensive Medicare fraud, and said it was tied to Russian - Armenian organized crime, that Newsom's response was in fact to call it racist. That was not an attack on the Armenian community, we can see the video and that wasn't in it. His evidence for fraud was not "look at all the Armenians, look at the evil Cyrillic writing, there has to be crime here" it was "this four block radius has 42 registered hospice care providers in it, which is tied to organized crime groups that also use Cyrillic writing."
