Marimba Ani Yurugu â The Secrets of Whites
Listervelt Middleton : If you told Black people that white people were committing biological genocide against us,and that by the year two thousandâwhat ever âthere would be no more black peopleâ you would get one reaction. But youâre saying that weâre being threaten with âcultural, and psychological âextinction.â How do you get âAfricanâ people to see the urgency of this situation?
Dr Marimba Ani: I donât know frankly if you can.â I think we have to focus on âyoung people!.. Young African peopleâ who have not been so âconditionedâ with away of thinking that supports âEuropeanâ âimperialismâ European âpower!âŠ
They still have the ability to use their intuition, and their âspiritualityâ their âAfricannesâ to createâ to think beyond the limitations that have been given to them in âEuropeanâ âacademies.â
I think most of us as âadultsâ as âeldersâ have been so âconditionedâ that weâre âafraid!âŠ
To move beyond the âparametersâ that have been defined by our âenemiesâ in our âthinking!so that our âvision is âlimited!âŠAnd so we are really not the âpeopleâ who should be âconceptualizingâ the âplainsâ you know the âmovementsâ what we should be âbuilding.â
But I focus on the âyounger âpeopleâ who hopefully are still more in âtouch with what is ânaturalâ to â Africanâ People.â And if I can affirmed that in âthemâ they will see the urgency!⊠I find that in my âteachingâ I find that in teaching âyoung people that once they are affirmed, and introduced in a âconsciousâ way to the âworld to the âAfricanâ world viewâ it becomes crystal clear to them.â And they see in an âurgencyâ in us as âAfricanâ people âbuildingâ for self!..As opposed to âimitatingâ forms which have been put in place to make sure that we âcontinue to be âoppressed.â
Listervelt Middleton:Culturally, and âpsychologicallyâ do you think we ârealizeâ what we have âlost?
Dr Marimba Ani: No! Not ,You know itâs so,itâs ironic becauseâ we donât realize it on a âconsciousâ level.â Yet we live it everyday!⊠In the way we âwalkâIn the way we âtalkâ in the âmusic we âcreateâ There is a depth of âspiritualityâ which exist in us as a âpeopleâwhich has continued since out âorigins.â That our âancestorsâ has pass to us which we continue to pass on ourselvesâ That we donât âconsciously ârecognize as a âstrengthâwe donât realize that it is something that we need to use to âthinkâ with so that when we are âpresented with a âEuropeanâ âworld viewâ In the âclassroomâ We think that thatâs the only way to be! Thatâs the only way to âthinkâ Cause we didnât come with anything!.. so I donât think that we are âawareâ on a âconsciousâ level of what is it that we âmoved away from in terms of âPower.âYou see thatâs what weâre not âaware of.â
Listervelt Middleton :Could you talk some about how we came to be âwhoâ and what we are today,If you understand the âquestionâ
Dr Marimba Ani: I think I do.â
Listervelt Middleton:Ok
Dr Marimba Ani: I think we have to look back at a âperiodâ that I call the ââMaafa.â We as âAfricansâ were very âconsciouslyâ âstrippedâ of our âculture!.. No that becomes a platitude. âYou know everybody say that be we have to see that we had a âstrong âculture, and so forth, but nobody seems to ârealizeâ the depth of what that means!..
Being âstripped of our âcultureâmeant being âconditionedâ to âacceptâ ourselves as âinferiorâ âbeingsâ Okay.â It meant that we were âconditionedâ to feel that we have to be âdependentâ on âEuropeans.â âDependentâ on âwhite people!⊠That we could not do things for ourselves, and in our own âImage.â That âconditioningâ began with a period a âlong periodâ of âterrorism!âŠwhich was very âphysicalâ You know âphysically âmanifested at the same time there was the âbreaking of the will!.. So there was âcultural âviolenceâ I call it! you know in the âbookâ as well as the âphysicalâ âviolenceâ which is very important.â
We then came to a period, and which we mistakenly thought we were free!⊠Weâre now at a point where we think that we have âfreedomâ the ability to be whatever it is that we can be within the âsocietyâand so forth.â Yet what happened is that we are still âthink within a âmodalityâ that has been âdeterminedâ by those who would âoppress us.â Those who would âcontrol us.â And we donât see beyond that!⊠So the âquestionâ for me becomes âWHO CONTROLS HOW YOU THINK?âŠ
We have the âabilityâ to create our own âstructuresâ our own âtheoriesâ our own âdefinitionsâ of ârealityâ to look at the âAfrican world view.â To look at for instance The âDogon people.â To look at the âKemetic people.â To look at our own people who have,âeven âlook at âCarter .G. Woodsonâ for instanceâ The Miseducation of the Negro.â Which I donât think was ever really understood by us.â And to us these things: as âinspirations âthe building of âinstitutionsâthe âcreation of thingsâ âbuilding out own âbuildings!⊠We have the ability to do that!⊠So it almost like we have been âconditionedâ so well through such a long âprocessâ that now it is us who are âenslaving ourselvesâ âMentally!âŠ
Listervelt Middleton:Because the job is already been;
Dr Marimba Ani: The âjobâ has been done!⊠It would be so easyâ in one sense for us to undo it. Thatâs what Iâm saying in the bookâ because the way the system of âEuropeanâ control worksâ Is that you have to accept a âconceptâ of ârealityâ which makes them âsuperior.â

The Maafa
The term âMaafaâ (from the book, âLet The Circle Be Unbrokenâ, by Dr. Marimba Ani) is a kiswahili word for âdisasterâ that we are now using to reclaim our right to tell our own story. Maafa refers to the enslavement of our people and to the sustained attempt to dehumanize us. Because the Maafa has disconnected us from our cultural origins, we have remained vulnerable in a social order that does not reflect our cultural identity.

http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/mitos_creacion/esp_mitoscreacion_1.htmThe civilization of Ancient Egypt lasted longer than the entire span of what we have come to accept as ârecorded historyâ: over three thousand years. During these millenia the Egyptians developed a multitude of gods and goddesses, as well as esoteric practices that we are still unravelling the meaning of. Besides this, Egypt was the source of the first true monothestic religion, under the pharaoh Akhenaton. This rich tradition was mostly unknown until the early nineteenth century, when the Egyptian language was finally deciphered.
