Eddie doesn't think about it while Buck is missing. Not that he avoids it on purpose, not exactly. He just knows he has to focus because no one else is out there looking for him. So the why of it all is there, obviously, but it's also irrelevant. It's secondary. They're not looking for Buck, so Eddie has to. One foot in front of the other, eyes straight ahead. No room for anything else. So it's not until after, when Buck is safe (but back in that hospital, unfortunately, the only one for a hundred miles) and Eddie is debriefing Christopher - glossing over most of the last 24 hours in favor of what he hopes is a more reassuring 'we're both okay and we'll be home in a few days' message - that it comes back to the forefront. Because Chris, forever way too emotionally intelligent for his age, somehow manages to pick up on it even through Eddie's overly sanitized retelling of events. "What- what aren't you telling me?" he asks plainly. "Did- why didn't the cops help you?"
