Leh Ladakh, honestly: what the ManaliāLeh road trip is actually like
Everyone shows you the photos. The mirror-still lake, the prayer flags, the road disappearing into a brown horizon. Nobody tells you that you'll cry a little at Tanglang La because you're 5,300 metres up and the air is thin and the view is justĀ thatĀ much. So here's the honest version of the Leh Ladakh trip ā the one worth saving for later.
The road is the destination
The ManaliāLeh Highway is roughly 470 km of pure cinema. You climb out of green Himachal, cross the Atal Tunnel, and within hours the trees vanish and the world turns to rock and sky. Four major passes, endless switchbacks, river crossings, and the famous Gata Loops. It usually opens fromĀ late May/June to early October, once the snow clears.
Most people do it one of two ways: on a motorcycle, or in a tough 4x4. The thing nobody warns you about
Altitude. Leh sits at ~3,500 m and people fly straight in and then wonder why they feel awful. Give yourselfĀ two full days to acclimatise in Leh before going higher. Drink water, skip alcohol the first nights, and take it slow. If you drive up from Manali instead of flying, your body adjusts on the way ā which is one more reason the road trip wins.
Some areas (Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri) need Inner Line Permits, and rules shift year to year, so it's worth letting a local team sort the paperwork.
