Artwork that I made for a StarWars Artjam with friends. The theme was Star Wars: Rogue One. Chirrut was a character that was iffy for me at first, kinda corny. But as I rewatched the trailers while I was making this, I learned to like him! Deviantart Link: http://hinootora.deviantart.com/art/Chirrut-Imwe-645158462
Sage advice. See more highlights from Drake’s SNL.
Hi Charlie, I've been a fan for a long time (queue whirring fan sounds) ;) I am always so amazed at what you're able to accomplish within a day packed with an 8,9 hour work day AND still have time for your "free time" art AND have a life outside of that....How do you manage? How do you make sure you have the time and the energy to accomplish and be successful in your daily schedule? Thank you for your time, sincerely, fan (whirrrrrr).
Well gosh, You make me sound like I’ve really got a handle on everything! Haha. Thank you.
I assure you I’m not always that organized - sometimes I juggle more balls than I can handle! I’m also absolutely positive that my life could be considered pretty plain by comparison. But, having said that, it’s essay time:
I don’t really know how I juggle it - I just do! I feel like I prioritize the things that are most important - when they’re the most important to me. Does that make sense? I always make sure that I’m doing my best at my day job. I’m lucky to have such a job in the first place - so I try to take care of it. Then of course I usually have freelance work waiting for me at home. I try and spread this out, doing a few hours here and there throughout the week. It does tend to pile up and overlap sometimes, but other times there are weeks when it’s quieter and I get a nice break. A break being not having to do extra work outside of my usual work, haha.
Then I have personal work! The funny thing is - even when I spend all day painting for other people - art is still what I want to do in my downtime. I can go a little while without painting for myself, but after a while it turns into a really big itch, and as distracting as it is -having personal work I want to do at the same time as freelance- it keeps me going.
The other thing to know about me is that I’m incredibly selfish. I do a lot of work, there’s no getting around that. But I also know when to just down tools and do what I want. Sometimes the work does pile up and it collides into another project and deadlines group together, but if that happens - I stop. I get the work done, and I stop. I turn off my stupid PC and I go sit on my ass with some wine and a book. I know when to ask for more time, I’m learning to say no. I never try to take on more work than I can handle in the first place, and I definitely give myself a break when things get too crazy.
And then, If I’m completely honest - I’m not that social. I’m really not. My parents always used to complain about me being an antisocial git when I was growing up and I suppose it’s true. I’m not a party goer, I don’t have a ton of friends. I’m very much a home-body and honestly, I kind of want to spend the majority of my time painting and reading. I find it very fulfilling - give me a moment to wander, and that’s exactly what I think about doing. I do enjoy going out, particularly with friends from work, but I’m a quiet soul at heart. Give me time to paint and read, and I’m a happy bunny.
Other than that - I try to make sure I don’t stay up reading till 1 am on work nights too often.
JP/I went to Japan this year… but I lost my job ..
I’ve gotten a lot of messages from younger artists recently and wanted to give you some practical advice. First off, congrats! You have an advantage over a lot of people because you have so much time to get better. I know sometimes it can be frustrating because it feels like you’re not improving, but try to remind yourself that it is a very slow process. It will take many years for you to reach a level where you’re happy with your skills. The trick is to enjoy the process. Enjoy the challenge. Try not to be too hard on yourself when you fail. All great artists go through failure and frustration, but the ones that come out on top in the end are the ones that don’t quit. Just keep practicing and having fun.
Here’s an example. The drawing on the left was done in 2003 and the one on the right was done in 2012. Slow and steady wins the race.
Attention ALL artists!
You sure have seen this post. It has spread like wildfire over the past few days so I doubt there is any artist out there who hasn’t seen it. But even if you didn’t, you should read on because I’m about to tell you a handy little thing that can help you to protect your art from such assholes as the anon who submitted this bullcrap, as well as art thieves in general.
The magic word is Metadata.
Metadata is like an invisible signature that is embeded into a file. It can contain all kinds of information, like Title, date, keywords for online seach engines, and copyright information. And the best thing is, since this information is “hidden” in the code of your picture, it’s hard to remove it.
There is a nice basic tutorial on how to add Metadata, or “additional file information” to your images in photoshop. It’s really, really easy so check it out!
“Adding Your Contact And Copyright Info To Your Photos With Photoshop” on PhotoshopEssentials.com
I’m not sure if you can do the same with any other art program. If you know how to do this in other programs / can confirm that it works the same way there, please tell me so I can add the information to this post.
Adding the Metadata will not stop idiots from taking and reposting your art. It also won’t make them stop editing out your signature. It WILL however, help you prove that you are the original artist whenever you have to. Always remember my friends. You, the artist, are protected by law. No one has the right to take your intellectual property and hard work and repost, use or edit it without your permission. Ever.
signal boost for all them artists out there
I could ask a question of photoshop? I would like to make the effect of fire in the hand of Natsu but do not know how it's done. you could make a tutorial about this and if this is not possible, You could tell me some page or site that I can learn to do this? Are incredible the drawings you make in this program, it almost seems as if they were official of the series... I'll never know draw Well TTDTT Thanks for reading me, sorry for the inconvenience and sorry for my bad english ;-;
No problem! your english very good @kingcrownlight !
I don’t know any pages where you can find this but I guess I can show you how I do it ^^
NATSU’S FIRE TUTORIAL
First of all here’s our fire reference:
Let’s get started!
Create 2 layers, one for the Background and one for the fire. Place the Fire layer on top of the BG one.
Activate the “fx” layer at the bottom of the Layer window and then select > Outer Glow. Type all the properties as shown below
Do the same process for the Inner Glow, which is right below the Outer one.
You can now edit your fire by painting it with different tones. You can also use the Eraser tool to create a different shape
Add a new layer and position it under your Fire Layer, I used a red tone to make the fire more vibrant.
FINAL STEP: (Optional, you don’t really have to do this)
You can add a motion blur effect to your fire by doing this:
Double your fire layers (except the Background);
Merge the new 3 layers and hide the original 3 ones.
Go to Filter>Blur> Motion Blur> and add the properties as shown below
and TAH-DAH! Our fire is done!!
After this you can place the fire on top of your Natsu’s hands, hope it helped you a little bit! :D
