Imagine being confined in a secret chamber in your family’s basement and not seeing the light of day for over two decades. Now imagine your mother and siblings, who live just upstairs, having no idea where you are that whole time. That’s exactly what happened to Elisabeth Fritzl. When she was just 18-years-old, her father, Josef Fritzl, turned the basement’s hidden cellar into a prison cell. He then lured her downstairs and had her hold the door in place as he began fitting it into the frame. What she didn’t know was that she was holding the last piece needed to seal the chamber where she was going to be held hostage for the next 24 years of her life. Josef thereafter held an ether-soaked towel over his daughter’s face until she was unconscious and threw her into the chamber. To further conceal her whereabouts, Josef forced his daughter to write a fake letter to the police, stating she had run away to stay with a friend and threatened to leave the country if anyone dared search for her.

Over the course of the next 24 years, Josef discreetly visited Elisabeth in her windowless cellar every three days where he repeatedly raped her while she was held against her will. The sexual abuse at the hands of her father eventually resulted in the births of seven children during her captivity, one of whom died shortly after birth. Josef would force Elisabeth to perform sexual acts on him in front of the children. As punishment, he would typically shut off the lights and refuse the captives food for days. On April 19, 2008, the eldest daughter, Kerstin, fell extremely ill, so Josef took her to the hospital. He then freed Elisabeth and the other children so she could visit Kerstin in the hospital. After an anonymous tip-off during the visit, both Kerstin and Josef were taken into police custody where they were questioned, and that’s when Elisabeth unleashed the story of her decades-long enslavement, rape, incest, and false imprisonment. Josef was arrested and a year later was sentenced to life in prison.
