New critter alert: Researchers at the California Academy of Sciences have discovered a totes adorbs new species of elephant shrew, the Macroscelides micus.
From the press release:
Sengis are restricted to Africa and, despite their small size, are more closely related to elephants, sea cows, and aardvarks than they are to true shrews. Found in a remote area of Namibia, on the inland edge of the Namib Desert at the base of the Etendeka Plateau, scientists believe this new species went undescribed for so long because of the challenges of doing scientific research in such an isolated area. Yet it is precisely this isolation, and the unique environmental conditions in the region, that have given rise to this and other endemic organisms.
Welcome to the critter team, little buddy!

Hipster Critter Rule #14: It's summertime, which means it's time for watermelon. Critters munch!
Brooklyn-based Gear to Go Outfitters is offering a new Trail Taxi, which will transport nature-starved New Yorkers from several locations around Brooklyn and Manhattan and dump them off at the trail head of their choice.

Recently the internet has been buzzing about The Hipster Music Index from Priceonomics. FINALLY someone has used science to clearly define acceptably hipster musical tastes.
Is it right? We have no idea, but we are intrigued by a chart that somehow compares Vampire Weekend, Kanye, Deafheaven, AND Fuck Buttons.
Our tip - follow Hipster Critters Rule #32: Listen to music you like, and wear awesome t-shirts.
Nature blog. Following back all new followers!
Guys. GUYS. Shake Shack has new fries. This is huge. #shakeshack #nyc (at Shake Shack)

So, we really like porcupines. Who knew these critters made such Pikachu-like noises? Watch Teddy make his prediction for the big game. Pretty sure corn *might* win in the end.
h/t to Jezebel for their excellent Teddy the Porcupine coverage
Way back in 2012, orphaned baby walrus Mitik made the move to Brooklyn and settled into his new home at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island. Like so many new Brooklynites, he was sort of confused and had the scraggly beginnings of a mustache:
Everyone loves him, because he is the best. Stephen Colbert agrees.
He also dealt with Sandy like a champ.
As he settled into Brooklyn, his whiskers grew fuller, and he developed strong opinions, such as “Seaweed is the new kale.”
Now Mitik has grown some kick-ass tusks and moved to Texas to enjoy the warmer weather and the company of other walruses, since he basically thinks he is a human.
We miss you, Mitik. Come back soon.
Seems the #bunnies had a #snow convention this morning #winter #bunny #bunnytracks
Owls are super in right now. According to The Atlantic, ultra-hip Snowy Owls are winter's newest gentrifiers, migrating to the coolest above ground spaces.
Critter coverage at New York Times focuses on Central Park's elegant Long-Eared Owls. Remember this pro-tip from the Times: "Observe an owl respectfully, with binoculars, from a dozen or more feet away, and it may afford you the pleasure of another visit."
We've included this handy video for more owl info.
Saturday Night Squee: Look at his little spots! And his tiny tufted ears!
The Cincinnati Zoo's exotic baby ocelot, Santos, is totes adorbs. And he likes to hang out with a dog named Blakely. Because he is awesome.

Saturday Night Squee: Today was the perfect sunny summer day in NYC, so we wanted to find a video to match.
WHATEVER HERE ARE SOME RED PANDAS FROLICKING IN THE SNOW LIKE TINY ADORABLE SNOW BOSSES.
Totes adorbs knows no season.
In case you haven't heard, it's colder than you can ever possibly imagine outside. After experiencing a rather harrowing -40 windchill (frozen sad face) while taking out the garbage this morning, we've invoked Hipster Critters Rule #128: Do not go outside.
Instead, get your snow action from these totes adorbs Red Pandas we found last August and check out some amazing t-shirts.
