“who was the curse user, your former classmate, suguru geto, to you?”
the question stings, like if someone were to take a kitchen knife and slide it right into your chest, causing your heart to halt.
their interrogating eyes drill into you as the question continues to linger in the room, lit up with uncomfortable and equally interrogating lighting.
swallowing the lump in your throat, you open your mouth to begin with a response “suguru-“ the name stops on your tongue, leaving a bitter taste as the memory is him floods your mind.
“yes…?”
“he was-“ again you stop, having no idea how to even answer the question.
one of the two suit clad men in front of you shifts in his chair and leans forward, placing his elbows on the table — with a belittling tone he addresses you by your last name.
“what’s it to you anyways?” you snap, though your voice lack confidence.
“we’re merely trying to map out the timeline of events and what could have lead to this entire situation.”
“but my relationship-“ you choke, noticing how the word 'relationship' cause both of the men to quirk an interested eyebrow. “i don’t see how my relation to him is of any concern to you.”
“what suguru geto did is a tragedy beyond comprehension and he is a danger to sorcerers and non-sorcerers alike. we have a duty to put him to justice, and have him executed for his crimes. any information that regards him is deemed useful.”
“you seem to be awfully certain i have any information at all.”
“well, you were classmates,” he shrugs casually and leans back in his chair with a sigh. “and-“ his and causes the hairs on your arms to raise. “we might have been made aware that you were more involved with him than you’re telling us.”
your breath hitches in your throat, clutching your arms around yourself to surpress the shiver that’s slowly traveling throughout your body.
“where’d you hear that?” you ask almost in a whisper.
“we have our sources.”
curse whoever blabbered — no matter if it was ill intended or not. it was nobody’s business but yours and suguru’s. and least of all the asshole sorcerers in front of you.
you find your peace, releasing the air you've trapped in your lungs. “i’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.”
they share a look, one of annoyance. it seems they were expecting you to protest to any cooperation, but it didn’t make it any less frustrating to them.
“miss-“ same degrading tone, “we understand this is difficult for you. but we know you understand what’s at risk here. more people will die.”
“then i suggest you go out and do something about it instead of wasting your time in here. the world isn’t saved by you sitting on your asses.”
another shared look.
“just help us paint the picture, alright?”
“why should i?”
“because,” he sighs, tapping his fingers in an ominous rhythm against the tabletop. “we can have you on trial for accessory to homicide.”
you narrow your eyes at them — if looks could kill — feeling how the air in the room turns cold with pure hostility.
“what?” you burst out, chest raising and sinking rapidly as anxiety begins to fill your body. “you can’t do that!”
“we can’t?” he taunts. “because the way i see it, you’re refusing to cooperate, which could show signs of conspiring with the enemy.”
“that’s ridiculous.”
“who’s to say you don’t know of the whereabouts of one suguru geto?”
“you have no evidence!”
“no?” they challenge, and in the moment you realise they’re hiding something. whatever it is, they have something damning on you. and you know they aren't above embellishing the truth about to fit their needs.
one of the men place a piece of shiny paper on the table. slowly he spins it around before slowly sliding it across the table until it’s placed directly in front of you.
it doesn’t even take a second before the tears well up in your eyes.
in front of you is a picture of you and suguru from the night before the news hit jujutsu society. how or where this picture comes from is a mystery to you, but it exists nontheless, and it sure as hell paints you in an incriminating light.
it’s not the clearest of photos, but you can very definitly make out suguru tenderly cupping your cheek as you lean into his touch — the feelings traveling between you two, oozing out of the picture.
and you’re instantly brought back to the moment — just a day before disaster, and you had no idea what was in store for you.
all you knew was you loved him. deeply. painfully. purely and with your whole being.
and by the look in your eyes, one can clearly tell. it's no secret to anyone.
in the moment captured, one can see you would do anything for suguru geto.
“we know you were romantically involved with him.” you look up at them, desperation in your eyes as the tears roll down your cheeks. “we know this photo was captured the night before he killed 112 people, including his parents. you were the last person he talked to before he left, so who do you think they’ll believe? us, or the girl who seems willing to lay her life down for a killer?”
your gaze flicker between them, and the only thing your mind can make out is him — suguru.
he always knew what to do and say to make you feel better. the only one to bring you a true and honest sense of safety.
then anger fills you — because he so selfishly stole that security from you when he chose to do what he did, and you were now to pay the price.
you sniffle, thinking of what to say.
“well,” you say, voice cracking. “it doesn’t matter what i say, does it?” they both twist their face into one of confusion, like they had expected their threats to work and for you to crack under the pressure immediately. “you seem to know the truth already. your truth anyways, and the only way i go unscathed is if i give him up completely. am i right?”
“miss, we highly suggest you rethink-“
“the answer is no. i’m not telling you anything.”
you don’t condone his actions — far from it. if you had known, you would have done anything in your power to prevent it from happening.
but it doesn’t change the fact that you love him still. with all that you are, even after what he has done. both to the world and to you.
