it was a double - edged blade. nobody liked going into the doctor's office unless absolutely necessary, and nobody liked going into the doctor's office unless absolutely necessary. yosano cherished the privacy of her own space at the agency, relishing in the freedom and separation from the unorganized chaos of main space. but it got a bit too quiet at times, leaving her to stare at the wall - painted walls trying to conjure some form of an image in her mind, just to stay awake and entertained despite the paperwork piling up on her desk. perhaps she'd spoken too soon, though, that instead of focusing on her work she was now staring at that familiar head of hair hiding under her desk. how dazai managed to contort himself to fit in such a narrow space was beyond her. her chair had been slid away, backed up against the wall behind as her leg crossed at the knee, weary sigh escaping her lips. “ did you get on kunikida's nerves this early already ? ” tip of her pen tapped at her lips as she hummed. “ don't tell me, another one of your peeved flings has shown up around here again. ” magentas narrowed at him, brow arching. “ if you were trying to escape training, hiding here wouldn't have helped you. like, at all. ” ❱ * @osaumu

@hellshovnd — His shoulders tremble with each cough, the wretched sound almost eclipsed by the clanks and falls of the battle had he not stumbled close to her. Being separated from the mafia mid mission wasn't ideal, but Akutagawa was used to dealing with foes alone. A shame that the Detective Agency was also present, as well as that nuisance of a man tiger. Her form swims in sight, almost mistaking her for one of the grunts were it not for the tell tale butterfly on her hair giving away her identity. He hadn't ever personally dealt with the doctor but stories of old times and the whines of Kajii were enough warning for him to put a defensive act around her. "Doct-" His voice is cut with another cough, the debris around was too thick and he hates how it made him seem weak. Pushing himself up, he wanes in his stance as he regards her viciously. Despite his gaze, Rashomon stays looming over, a veiled threat should Yosano chose to attack. "You will not get in my way."

the doctor rarely found herself in the field unless deemed absolutely necessary, energy and effort saved for injuries and paperwork at the office when she wasn't working at the clinic. but all units were called at last minute, her phone blaring, and she'd gathered they had grossly underprepared, underestimating the severity of the case they'd stumbled upon. last thing she wanted was to cross paths with the port mafia, a walking reminder of the wretched past that still anchored her the slightest, still tainted her shadows and hid in the crevices of her slumber. the oversized cleaver hung over her shoulder with ease, blood dripping from its blade as she'd ruthlessly injured a number of hired bodies — definitely not port mafia members, at least not yet, just overly - confident wastes of spaces with no idea what they'd signed on for.

ugh, so messy. the man - made demolition had caused her favorite blouse to tear, the hem of her skirt slightly scorched from the bouncing flames, just nearly missing the surface of her skin. limbs lightly tattered in soot, hair frazzled enough and she could feel her patience wearing thin. who was going to get what they needed so they could leave ?

magentas landed on akutagawa, every muscle in her body tensing and yet she'd performed swimmingly — practiced boredom, indifference painted over her features as if she could not care less, as if she had better foes to deal with. “ so serious, so demanding. i did not realize i was here to take orders from a little thing like you. ” heels clacked over the pavement as she stepped towards him, ends of her lips twitching with anticipation. “ your friend seems excited. ” chin lifted, aimed in his ability's direction before her weight shifted from one hip to the other. “ i assume by now you've heard about me from your failed co - members ... you could step aside. ”

' it takes kunikida a moment to realize yosano would have no idea what he's referring to. after all, so much had happened since they saw each other. he has to pause, clearing his throat. there is so much hanging between them, so much that he feels he can't even begin to unpack it all without crying. they had both almost died a thousand times over since this nightmare began, but he can't stop replaying one moment over and over.

' the sniper. you pushed me out of the way and took it yourself. why did you do that ? ' it's not like he had never been shot before. he knows yosano can heal herself just as quickly, but the concept troubles him. he didn't want to be so weak that others had to dive in front of him to protect him. he should have been faster.

' you could have gotten seriously injured. you were. you... ' he stops, sighing and adjusting his glasses. ' if we were in that spot again. don't do that again. i... forbid it. are we clear ? ' it's more of a plea than a demand. he knows he could never command yosano to do anything. no man could. but he says it anyway, knowing that neither of them believe it for a second.

“ kunikida ... ” velveted tone trailed off as manicured brows furrowed, magentas shifting to focus on her co - worker. the confines of anne's room provided just a brief sense of deluded safety, a muffled quietness amidst the chaos of the world that awaited to tear them to shreds. yosano had never seen anything like it, the world collectively turned against them and leaving them ... stranded, fending for themselves in ways they couldn't have fathomed. though she'd been fully healed by this point, she felt those old scars reopening for the first time in years, seeping with agony. she'd nearly died a thousand times, saved her team a thousand times, and yet this had hit harder.

ivories bit down on plush carmines, gloved fingers fiddling with the cuffed sleeves of her blouse — torn and worn at this point, she must've looked a mess. they all were. “ what kind of question is that ? ” hands placed on her hips, weight shifting from on side to the other. “ why wouldn't i do that ? ” the action had been done without a single thought, she didn't even need to consider it — like it was instinctual, natural for her to find herself in the crossfire just for him. for all of them, really. the fear of the unknown had her worried, concerned : what if she couldn't save him if he got hit ?

“ but i'm fine. ” she insisted, small steps bringing her closer to him, arms moving to fold over her chest in silent defiance. tendrils shadowed the apples of her cheek, head tilting to the side the slightest as she inspected him with quiet curiosity. “ no, we're not clear. i will do it again. ” another step, echoes of her shoes filling the space, “ and again. because that's what we do for each other. ” toe of her shoe gently collided with his shin in a playful manner. “ unless you want me to lie to you and say i won't ... ”

she almost missed it, hearing them in the first place through the stethoscope but she caught the movements of their lips, the expression worn over their features in a manner that would otherwise trigger her concern. two sides of her existed in battle with each other — how far could she go with that ability of hers ? could she heal them ? or would it leave her in a state much worse off ? while the other, more rare and ... nurturing ? wanted to see to their predicament herself. but she knew both were just fool's errands, either situating her in a position she was not equipped to handle.

“ that's what i heard them call you, but is there something you'd like for me to say otherwise ? ” removing the stethoscope carefully and letting it rest over the back of her neck, she cracked her knuckles through the sterile gloves. “ almost. ” no broken bones, no internal bleeding, nothing outwardly alarming other than the marks from the blades. “ are you this eager to return ? ”

the doctor had been reorganizing her stock, the infirmary littered with opened boxes and expired equipment thrown in a large bag in the corner, a few more additions away from toppling over completely. the week had been slow enough for her to dedicate time to it, but it was tedious work and though she was nearly finished, she craved distraction. ears perked at the sound of the knock, head twisting to find atsushi, ends of carmines curving upwards the slightest. “ just who i was hoping to see right now ! ” setting the box of gloves down on the counter, she walked towards the weretiger, gloved hand out to accept the file. “ we're going to go shopping today. unfortunately, for work purposes only. ” she sighed, light and airy in a subtle woe is me manner. “ killing two birds with one stone, too. ranpo mentioned something being off about his last case so i want to follow - up while we're out. ” head tilted to the side the slightest as she inspected him. “ you up for it ? ”

they stood apart from the denser crowd, champagne glasses in hand, a mere aesthetic aid in dazai's hand. whatever protests dazai had voiced about his usage in this scenario had gone ignored, for the good of the case, and whatever manipulations the other detectives tried to force onto him as to the importance of it, fell on equally deaf ears. he'd made an effort, nonetheless, as if he was forced to play a part, he'd be damned if he didn't do it to perfection. certain strings had been pulled in ways of providing him with a well - fitting, lavish suit befitting of the level of society they would pretend they belonged to, but the ring he'd slipped onto yosano's finger remained a beautiful addition of his own design.

in an uncomfortably raw sense, dazai felt exposed amongst the sea of well - off individuals, though not that it showed. bandages had been half removed, or lowered to suit his new appearance — kunikida had proposed there would be too many inwardly asked questions regarding the look of him, and the less questions they had to answer, the better. if anyone examined the line of his collar for too long, they would be able to notice the beginnings of a jagged scar that dipped below the surface. no matter the lengths he'd let yosano go to try and conceal it.

as a result the best way forward was for the two of them to look entirely too enveloped in each other to pay anyone else any real attention, other than their intended target, but the act would only work to further serve their cause. dazai stood close, and if either of them used the other as a tether to distract from their uneasiness, that was nobody's business. he'd taken to draping an arm around yosano's waist, his touch nothing more than a ghost of a thing, barely tangible but presenting to the other guests that they perhaps weren't eager for their own conversation to be interrupted.

his head inclined towards her, at her words dazai's lips upturned, he placed his champagne flute on a nearby table to idly brush strands away from his eyes, now that she had drawn his attention back to it. “ decent is not a word that should be used where i'm concerned, thanks. ” the brief crinkle of his nose the only tell that the style was perhaps beginning to grate on him, parted neatly at his hairline and pushed away from his face. “ just an idea, you should stop fiddling and let people see it. ” he threw a glance to yosano's hands, her fingers playing with the ring, before returning to scanning the side of the ballroom he'd chosen to stake - out, looking for their suspect. “ show it off. you're making it look like you're having second thoughts, which is obviously impossible. ”

the venue for the gala was everything she'd imagined when thinking of the word luxury — from the massive, intricate chandelier in the middle of the floor to the gold - crusted walls with stained art - work in alternating wall panels. and it was not the obviously tacky chandeliers that'd litter restaurants paired with a large flat - screen tv mounted. should her attention drift upwards, she'd find ceiling was a masterpiece itself, domed and paintings covering every inch with specks of what must have been ... gold foil ? the doctor had an eye for the prettier things in life, and though she could find a multitude of things to complain about with this case, playing the wealthy came with perks. it was worse the nakedness that engulfed her being, but she would tell herself : she was not yosano akiko, she was someone else entirely. someone without the flaws and the darkness that kept her anchored.

ever the skilled actress, she showed no reaction of shock or discomfort when she felt his heat radiating off of her, the ghost of his touch trailing over her silhouette. instead, she smiled, something cheeky and full of naiveté as she'd expect a newly - engaged woman to have, one utterly and hopelessly in love with her partner. those eyes of hers sparkled as she looked his way just once in nauseatingly adoration, cheeks rosy as if flustered within their own bubble. the lightness and innocence of the performance contrasted with the velvet bite of her words, “ should i have said you did poorly instead, then ? should do better at making it less bird's nest - y, my love. ” the title was enunciated thickly with sarcasm, but only for him to catch.

head turned the slightest as if close the lingering distance between them — what a beautiful couple, so lost in their own world that not even the whims of their public displays of affection could be cause for concern ! the angle was criminalizing, but enough space between them so that she could see him clearly. “ it's stunning. ” muttered under her breath as she finally removed her hand from the gem, fingers stretching, the sapphire catching the light as she adjusted its position. “ what poor soul did you steal this from ? or, don't tell me — does it actually somehow belong to you ? ” attention shifted back towards the crowd, where she could name most of the attendees from the files she briefly studied. all big names, all highly influential. and then she caught the target in the near distance, involved in boisterous conversation.

“ couldn't ever have second thoughts about marrying the one for me. ” she couldn't help the overly playful tone, taking on lame attempt at a tranatlantic accent of the west. her hand snaked up to gently trace the slight curls of his hair, seeming as if she were tucking loose strands behind his ear, but just using the motion as an excuse to flash the ring. “ spotted at your seven. say something to make me laugh obnoxiously loudly and it'll probably draw their attention. we can get to them later in the evening. maybe after the auction. ” and then her shoulders shrugged, forcing the thin strap to slide off. for this, she said nothing, only allowing a manicured brow to arch at him, testing.

usually she'd kept better track of which supplies were running low, and she was lucky she had just one roll of bandages left to use on kenji, a case - gone more violently than anticipated and leaving him with more injuries. it was nothing she felt was worth using her abilities, which — she could sense the surprise in the others' when he returned to the main office space. so the widest smile was present over her features as she spotted the young detective strolling into her infirmary, eyes brightening as she rose from her seat and reached out to take the small bags he'd been carrying. gloves, masks, sanitizer — precisely what she'd needed ! “ aww, how sweet. ” and then her gaze narrowed, lips pursing in thought as a manicured brow lifted in suspicion, “ what do you want ? ”
