A dance audition. Oh. I lived in LA for a few years before Easton. I didn’t like it though. Japan sounds cool though.
I was in Cypress, at Oxford Academy. I prefer it here though. -nods- Hai, Japan is great. Very different.
New York. I spent a little time training and studying on my own. Glad it’s over though. Where are you from?
New York -- it's so beautiful there. What were you training for? I'm from Japan originally, but I just moved here from California.
That’s the mouthful. I’m Peyton. I’m semi-new, I guess. Just returned. Welcome, or something.
Just Hiro is okay. Welcome back too, Peyton. Where are you returning from?
I don’t think I know you.
My name is Hiromi, Hiromi Kimura. I'm new at Easton.
Good morning, Easton. Someone should bring me coffee.
Good morning!
My family owns the most prestigious private hospitals in America, I’m also going Harvard Med. I’ll be fine.

Foreign Places and Fresh Starts | Anthony & Hiromi
“I played for the lacrosse team when the tournament was on, but not anything at the moment since there aren’t any big competitions running.” Anthony replied, redirecting back to her previous question. “Volleyball can actually be a lot harder than it looks. And I really enjoy baseball. I’d say that, basketball and sailing would be a few of my top sports, if you can count sailing, even though it’s not a field sport.” Glancing over as he let out a slightly amused smile between the contrast of his positioning with hers, Anthony reached over to place the joint just in the midst of her forefinger and thumb. Waiting until she clasped the two together, he let go of the instrument before moving back to rest comfortably.
“It’s really not that hard. Just put the safe end in your mouth and suck it in.” The boy mused, waiting as he observed curiously. Sitting up, he laughed a little apologetically once Hiromi inhaled, only to find herself in a fit of coughs. “Right, well, you don’t breathe in like a vacuum; more subtly. And once you have the smoke in your mouth, take out the joint and breathe in again just so it sits in your lungs and you don’t choke on it.” Hoping his explanation cleared the technique up a little, Anthony accepted back the joint after her second toke to rest it between his lips. “So you’ve really never done this before? Do you stay away from alcohol as well?”
Just like her talents lay in music, it seemed that Anthony's were in sports. Hiro nodded, feeling a little more assured that there was something he channeled his time and efforts into. She'd never understood how people could simply spend their days doing nothing - time moved so slowly that way, minutes dragging like hours. It was of course natural to need to relax every now and then, but respite was meant to be a reward for hard work. Gripping the spliff as he'd instructed, Hiromi cautiously held it between her fingers and lifted it to her lips. She never thought she would do something like this, but with Anthony looking at her expectantly, she felt that she couldn't let her new friend down. Attempting to mimic his prior actions and the technique she'd seen her father's business associates display, Hiro inhaled deeply; and spluttered, choking and coughing as the smoke burned her throat. Her cheeks tinged pink with embarrassment, the brunette was ready to shy away with shame at her failure. It was only Anthony's gentle guidance and her drive to succeed that had her leaning towards him, attempting to follow his direction. What he made meant some sense, and when she inhaled this time, she tried to go through each step. It still hurt and she struggled, but it was a significant improving. Smiling to herself at her small achievement, the girl passed the joint back to the brunet, shaking her head to the first part of his question and then nodding, "I don't engage in any addictive substances," She replied, pausing before adding, "Usually."
You seem shocked.
Do you not care about the welfare of your body? Your liver, your heart, your kidneys?
Seeing as I deal it, yes. But no, it was heroin.
Heroin?
When you’re too high to even stand, you just camp where you are.
Does everyone smoke marijuana here?
Hm, the ground in the woods is nearly as uncomfortable as the beds in Drake.
Why were you sleeping in the woods?
Foreign Places and Fresh Starts | Anthony & Hiromi
“Drums? Guitar I self-taught for the most part, but I guess I stopped my drum lessons because it became too much of a commitment. I don’t know, I’m just not one for having to sit down and learn something because someone tells you to.” Anthony attempted to explain the best he could, broadly aware of the fact that she might not see it in the same light. “But that was years ago, and I’ve forgotten a lot. I think sports are a lot more of what I’m into these days. And I enjoy going to the gym anytime I can, which, along with signing up for your extracurricular activities, you should check out.” The boy suggested, feeling rather fond of the on-campus fitness facilities as it was the one place he could go to clear his mind or waste hours at.
Oblivious to whether or not he’d received the okay from Hiromi, Anthony matched the small flame up to the end of his joint before inhaling deeply as the smoke filled his lungs. “I won’t. Don’t worry.” He smiled as a reassurance, puffing it out playfully to rest her mind. Having gotten used to his habit as his tolerance continued to grow over the years, the boy remained generally aware of his surroundings as he noted they were in a rather covert part of the school where still, quite a few carefree students hung about. Reaching the shade of a tree, he sat down on the soft grass before extending back as he propped himself against his elbows. “Do you want a try? Because something tells me you’ve never had a shot before.” He asked openly, letting out a brief laugh as he casually held out the joint for her.
It was odd, how they were managing to continue their conversation despite apparently being such opposites. Hiromi's whole life had been constructed on expectations; those of her parents, of her teachers, of society. Living up to what people presumed and then surpassing it was all she'd ever known; the thought of rejecting something, simply because you felt forced, was unimaginable. Pressure was meant to drive you forwards, not backwards. She nodded, finding herself able to understand his pursuits elsewhere in sports, "Do you play for any teams for the school?" She asked curiously, before continuing, "I've never been very into sports, but we all were required to participate in a team at least once. I did volleyball. Baseball is very popular in Japan though," The brunette continued to ramble, sticking her hands in her pockets. The scent of Anthony's joint was sharp and pungent. Hiromi had smelled weed before -- never back home in Japan, but if you wound up in a certain place in her prior school at a certain time, the halls reeked of it. It was unusual, the smoke distracting but not entirely unpleasant. Satisfied with his assurances for now, the petite girl hesitantly took a seat next to him, crossing her legs in front of her. She places her bag on her lap, her back rimrod straight, the complete difference between her and his relaxed slouch almost amusing. Surprised at his offer, the brunette looked at the preferred roll-up cautiously, stammering, "I, um... I've never - I don't know how..."
Foreign Places and Fresh Starts | Anthony & Hiromi
Walking along the carefully planned out pavements that cut across the grass on campus grounds, Anthony noticed the substantial height difference between the two once they found themselves up and moving as opposed to being seated. Having to tilt his head down ever so slightly, he continued on listening to her answer his general questions. “So basically, you can do anything musical-wise. I can play a fair bit of guitar. Learned the drums for a few years back when I was younger.” The boy added in his own input, almost having forgotten the few instrumental lessons his parents suggested here and there in his young adolescence.
Turning to the noticeable surprise in her voice, Anthony shrugged casually as he offered her a friendly smile, hoping that the initial timid vibe he was receiving would eventually wear off. “Yeah, why not. No one would mind. Besides, everyone would probably be too drunk to notice anyway. Except I have no idea when the next house parties will be, but if there ever is one, I’ll let you know.” He reassured her, before realizing that he hadn’t the slightest idea where they were heading. “I’m sure I’ve taken up too much of your time. Do you need to go back to your dorm and practice anything, or? I can walk you back if you’d like.” Anthony offered, feeling like he had an endless supply of time on his hands. Reaching into his pocket as they continued walking, he brought out one of his joints as he rested it comfortably between his lips, before turning to the brunette. “Oh, sorry. You don’t mind, do you?” He asked, already flicking his lighter.
The brunette shook her head, replying modestly, "Not everything. Two instruments and singing is only scratching the surface." She'd been more extensively classically trained as a child too, but her violin performances had been so terrible that she'd wound up quitting. Guitar lessons were where her true passions lay, and then piano had slowly been introduced several years on. It was singing that had come naturally, cultivated by her teachers so she could utilize her voice as another instrument. She had learned about scales and riffs and all the various musical jargon that came along with it from a very young age, but her knowledge on other instruments did not extend very far, "What made you stop?" She asked curiously, wondering why Anthony's lessons hadn't lasted any longer. Swallowing, the mention of alcohol made Hiromi undoubtedly nervous, but she knew there was no need to be. In establishments such as Easton, students became very savvy in ways which to party and not get caught, or simply worm their way out of difficult situations; there was no worry about getting into trouble, but that wasn't what concerned her. Avoiding getting drunk would be plausible enough if she watched her drink constantly and was extra vigilant -- besides, who knew when she'd get an opportunity like this again? Lost in her thoughts again, she found herself having to pedal to keep up with their conversation and shook her head, "Please, I'm happy to spend my time in good company. I have nowhere else to be," She responded, playing with the strap of her bag. They fell into a relatively comfortable silence until he produced the spliff from his bag; glancing up at him in shock, Hiro cast furtive looks around them. Even as she shook her head to signal that she didn't mind, she wondered how Anthony wasn't afraid that he would be caught in broad daylight, "Won't you get in trouble?" She whispered, as if she were scared to be overheard.
Foreign Places and Fresh Starts | Anthony & Hiromi
From the limited interaction he’d had with Hiromi, the boy had gathered in his mind the assumption that she seemed to be one of those people that preferred to keep to themselves, or rather, hold back at times. Feigning a look of hurt, Anthony allowed a grin to overtake his teasing expression on her comment of not having anyone to hang out with. “Am I not a friend then?” He challenged, meaning well as he stood from his seat. Patting down his pockets to assure himself that he wasn’t leaving anything behind, he gestured his head to the side to imply that they were leaving the coffee shop.
Whether the brunette wanted to actually leave the venue was a different matter, yet he thought that the two of them could use the fresh air, hoping that she wouldn’t mind the change of scenery. “Well, other than homework, what do you usually spend your time doing?” The boy inquired, still holding foreign to having such a hard work ethic. “You should come to some of the parties the houses hold; usually Ketlar and Billings but even though you’re not in either of them, I’m sure you’d be able to fit in.” He shrugged, making their way across campus without much of a sense of where they were going.
Startled, Hiromi shook her head vigorously. Although she could tell that he was just teasing her, the brunette was afraid she'd offended Anthony on some level, "I'm sorry, we just met and I didn't think you-" She began to stammer, nervously twisting her hands in her lap and cutting herself off before she made the situation even worse. When he stood from his seat, the feeling of dread only intensified, but the inclination of his head that he wanted her to follow comforted Hiro that that wasn't the case. Hastily reaching for her bag, she adjusted the strap over her shoulders and stood from her seat, ensuring she too had all her belongings. Following the older boy out of the coffee shop, the pair stepped out into the crisp afternoon. "I practice playing guitar and piano, I sing sometimes, and dance. I went to extra curricular classes back home but I haven't yet enrolled in any here," The brunette responded, still hesitant in her responses. Anthony's casual invitation however caused her behaviour to immediately change and she beamed widely. He wanted her to come to one of their parties? The only events she'd ever been to were orchestrated down to the last detail, fine banquets or parties for the business and celebrity elite. There had been one time where she'd wound up at a college party with a friend back in Cypress; the music could be heard a street away, and all the older kids had been loud and engaged in various sexual acts all around the house. It had taken ten minutes before she slipped away, finding her way back to the safety of her dorm. Yet Easton was different, and she was meant to be different here too, "Really? Do you think they would mind too much?"
