The passenger (2023) has made me have a lot of genuine realizations about myself and it’s been helping me a lot with some real tough shit goin on. Maybe unpopular opinion but I don't think Benson is like... a batshit insane, unhinged, impulsive person. HEAR ME OUT!!

We don't see much of Benson before the shooting, and after that he's running on adrenaline. As the day progresses, he gets more tired and more cornered, he grows more impulsive.

But before the shooting he just grunts when Randy greets him. He's the first guy at work, already mopping when Randy walks in. His uniform is tidy. He doesn't get involved with Chris bullying Randy until he has to.

Honestly, I think outside of the shooting, Benson would just be a quiet co-worker. Does his job, doesn't make small talk, goes home. It's just a job to him.

Straight after the shooting, he's still rather quiet. He tells Randy what to do, obviously, but aside from that he's not yelling. He's calm, he's thoughtful. It's not until he's driving that we start to see the mask slip or the adrenaline take over.

Chris making Randy swallow the burger, so reminiscent of Benson's abuse, was the tipping point. If not for that, Benson probably would've continued with his 'peaceful hillbilly existence'.
