Helpless and bound…
On the early morning hours of August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman, a former Marine sharpshooter, murdered both his mother and wife, leaving a note behind declaring his love for both women and that he killed them to save them from future humiliation. Later that morning, he armed himself with three rifles, two pistols, and a sawed-off shotgun before making his way to the University of Texas. Wheeling his equipment toward the Main Building of the university, he entered the elevator and exited on the 27th floor and climbed his way up a flight of stairs. He then encountered receptionist Edna Townsley. Quickly, he knocked her to the ground and, using the butt of his rifle, struck her twice over the head. He then started shooting at people who were coming up the stairs before approaching Edna to put a bullet in her brain, killing her instantly. Charles then entered the observational deck on the 27-story clock tower, which was located in the middle of the campus, giving him a perfect bird’s-eye view the surrounding campuses and streets. He then opened fire on the unsuspecting pedestrians below him. The attack carried on for a harrowing 96 minutes, only ending once two Austin police officers made their way up to the clock tower and shot Charles dead. By then, there were 15 people dead, including an unborn baby, and over 30 injured.
Although a motive for the senseless attack was never established, a brain tumor was uncovered during the autopsy, which is thought to have attributed to Charles’ violent impulses and fantasies. As of November 2017, the University of Texas tower shooting was ranked as the 8th deadliest mass shooting in American history.
