I know the fandom likes to joke about Grace being bad at naming things (slash Grace himself in the book is jokingly defensive about how he names things), but I would have called the organisms that eat astrophage "astrophagephage," so am I really any better?

Hey so that was a great date, yeah, but I don't think it's going to work out. Nono you didn't do anything wrong, and I have indeed had a crush on you since we started high school, it's just... well, I didn't want to bring it up at the time but we kinda got sucked into a portal fantasy midway through. We saved the kingdom over and over, relying on our knowledge of and trust in each other every time, throwing ourselves into the firing line to protect each other and using each others' conviction as a rock. We got married and lived a happy life together until the portal sucked us back mid-battle and you gave up all your memories of our journey in order to save my life right when we ended up back in the coffee shop. Yeah that was when I got a bit weird and went to the bathroom.

Anyway I thought we could push on and make the date work but I have all of these memories of secrets that this you never chose to share, decisions that this you never made, and intimacies that this you never experienced. And it's kind of screwing with the vibe yeah. Also on the date it was really, blatantly clear that you're sixteen whereas I have memories of ruling a fantasy kingdom for thirty years so like... that's a problem all on its own. Anyway this you just feels more like a daughter to me. A daughter with the woman I gave my heart and soul to over and over and received like in return, only to lose her forever on the journey home. On the plus side I can definitely help you with your math homework now.

Ok, here’s my pitch - Grace is a disgraced ex-eventing champion who got into a massive fight with a fellow rider on live tv. Now he works with Rocky on the ranch wrangling taumoeba LOL. It took him a bit to adjust to riding Western but he learned fast!

Rocky is still an alien in this AU and it is not addressed or explained at all. Also I think Grace kept his personal horse from his eventing days so he maybe rides a Thoroughbred or Arabian or something. Open to ideas!

maybe stratt owns the stable he boards his horse at and breeds some thoroughbreds with fancy pedrigees on the side. and obviously she sees all of this going down on tv. and when grace gets the news he is (at least temporarily) suspended from all USEF events and his trainer quit he cries in an empty stall and she walks up to him and tells him she doesnt respect him but she likes him and he should just let this blow over and take a break.

cue grace: i didnt even do anything! the old guard just cant handle hearing the truth (which is that their techniques are outdated and borderline abusive)!

stratt: you called your competitor a 'staggering waste of manure' and repeatedly made false doping allegations.

grace: okay. uh. yeah. but that doesnt make the other stuff any less true!

stratt: respectfully, grace, i think you could do with a break. i have an acquaintance who is looking for some help with his stock, it might do you some good to go down south for a while...

grace: uh, thanks but. im good. i dont need charity.

cue grace getting to rockys ranch. stratt neglected to mention hes an eridian and there arent exactly a lot of them in the business so grace is definitely in for a surprise. and having a difficult time adjusting and generally feeling dejected and forlorn but being tragically charmed by rockys cowboy ways. rocky takes none of his self-pitying shit and makes him work for his bed & board but after some initial tension they start getting along and the bickering is more amicable than not.

fast forward it turns out they like each other very much so grace stays at the ranch and ends up giving riding lessons to kids <3

finally watched project hail mary this weekend (previously read book). Which means I can finally do my post that only works for movie verse! So! You know the fandom road trip conversation where Grace tearfully confesses to being a coward who refused to save the Earth? and you know the fandom road trip conversation where Rocky awkwardly confesses to being a pervert whose been nude and eating in public like a freak the whole time they've known each other? Yeah, same conversation. They both were delicately building up to it for several agonizing weeks. A lot of beating-around-the-bush questions where they non-specifically confirmed that both of them had failed to mention or lied about about some aspects of themselves with the belief that they were never going to see each other again...and now they're going to be spending the rest of Grace's life together so... probably good to get it out there.

That also doesn't work (they keep catastrophizing and backing out) so then they decide to each record a confession while the other is sleeping, then play them back at the same time.
