welcome to rpwatch – an in-character blogging community dedicated to bringing life to the characters of overwatch.

we accept ocs, npcs, and characters with close to no lore(fio the blackwatch pilot and the recently revealed vincent, for example) and we allow being semi-canon-divergent as long as you don’t stray as far as to make it an au.

he stares down at his hands upon hearing the wisdom his ally shares. it’s true, and it’s somewhat inspiring in that he wishes believing it were that easy. it’s a mentality he had at one point, before ….

… before everything happened.

after thinking about it for a moment, he gently bumps his shoulder against her’s with a playful little smile, folding his hands in his lap once more.

he frowns at the question yoko asks, fumbling with the cords attached to his arm as he glares down at the ground in an attempt to avoid eye contact – maybe if he stayed quiet enough, she’d leave him alone on the topic of his emotional instability. it wasn’t exactly something he talked about all the time, but it was something only those closest to him – reyes, morrison, and mccree, for example – would comfort him on and work with him through it. 

it’s not that he didn’t trust his mother, but it’d been years since he’d last seen her, and while she was someone he used to be open with all the time, now is a different age, and now is the era where he’d tried to completely kill off all sociability he had left. now was the time he most isolated himself.

so things like how he felt about his body, how he felt like a monster, how he felt at first like he’d deserved the fate his brother had decided for him – those were all things that she wasn’t meant to know.

“ … for a while. being an assassin doesn’t require sharing your feelings. i’m sure you know that as well. ” he mutters, almost bitterly.

“ it’s okay, angela. i’m okay … i trust you… ”

genji’s breathing is labored and heavy, eyes half-lidded and struggling to stay awake, but a soft gaze remains in his eyes, despite how out of it he looks. reyes and mccree hadn’t been joking when they rushed the man into angela’s medbay, both of his arms slung over either man’s shoulder and being dragged along in a rush.

now, he lays in the medical bed, legs missing and cybernetics pushing out steam in an attempt to catch up to his quickly declining health. the mission in hanamura had been something that took a heavier toll on him than he’d like to admit, but the mission had been a success and that’s what had mattered at the time. while he had been warned not to push himself so fast after recovery, he still had managed to capture the guy they’d been after, and the intel that he brought with him.

“ it’s okay, i’m – i’m gonna be okay. ”

he repeats it over and over, though he’s unsure if he’s saying it to comfort himself, or to comfort the frantic doctor stressing over him, voice tiny and shaky. nonetheless, less words are needed to convey his thoughts when he sleepily squeezes her hand, offering an encouraging – yet pained – smile.

his reply is that of a quiet whimper, unlike his usual high and mighty attitude that shielded his vulnerabilities. his hair is a messy mop, sticking to his forehead with sweat and jutting out each and every way. his mask is plunked by his bedside in his room, and his armor is scattered along the ground halfassedly. instead, he situates herself in her room.

“ i … jesse, i . … ”

genji’s eyes search the other, hands reaching out timidly as if to ground himself with some contact. he’d been resting, when he was startled awake in the middle of the night via a nightmare involving his brother - the incident where he’d been stabbed from behind and gutted by his own family. his immediate reaction was to find comfort in his partner and companion.

“ i had the dream again … the one with my brother, and i … ” 

his words slur together, babbling quietly with a tone drastically different to the voice he shows the world. this one is a softer one, full of panic and a need for stability as he searches one of his only two current grounding points in his life, making a mantra of her nickname as he scoots closer, but freezes up when he doesn’t have explicit permission to touch her.

he offers a softened look, lower mouth mask unclasped in his hands and eyes looking somewhat distant. the statement slipping from him was sudden, and yet he felt the need to express it.

" ... thank you. it means... a lot to me. you are someone i find great comfort in. you and...and reyes, too. you both ... are family to me. "

he quickly wipes the distant look off his face, clasping his mask back into place as he fidgets, but the slight crinkle to his eyes shows the small smile underneath.

" don't tell anyone i said that. "
