There's no harm in learning more.
I WROTE THIS IN 2014! And I still stand with it.
Do you know how sad this picture makes me? That poor rhino is NEVER going to be a unicorn. No matter how hard it tries, it will never become one. We experience that with our own lives. We live in a world that tells us that we have to be unicorns. And we have no choice. I am not saying that we cannot be what we want to be. For example, I want to be an Environmental Consultant, and it takes work. But, I am super excited to start my career in something that I love.
What gets me the most about this picture, is that there is absolutely no physical, or evolutionary chance that this rhino will become a unicorn. Ever. It's false hope. Exactly what the advertisement industry does to it's audience. I often find myself comparing myself to the perfect models in the magazines. I know first hand that those models don't look like that in real life. It makes me hurt for them because they are considered beautiful, but are still changed digitally to appear so even more. It's your job to be beautiful, and are still "not good enough."
What sparked this thought, was not only the picture, but a song. John Mayer's "Waiting On The World To Change." How long ago did that song come out? I don't even know, but it has been a few years. He hits the mark with that one. "Our generation is going to rule the population." Personally, I believe that our generations knows that it is being exploited... So why are we not doing anything about it? Our generation is also pretty lazy. No one can argue me on that one. We have to stand up for what is right rather than sitting back and saying, "meh, someone else will do it."
We also need to be open to new ideas and possibilities. I have also noticed that many people are easily swayed by one source of information. We live in a day and age where information is free and easily accessible (internet) and still people are not digging deeper. Because information is so easily accessible, it is also easier to find all of the wrong types of information. That's where digging deeper comes in. When I am researching something or wanting more information, I will look at BOTH sides of the issue. Not look at one side, agree, and then that's that. For example, when I was looking in to adopting a pit bull, I went to the internet to get information. I looked at both sides. The pros and cons. There were a lot of cons, BUT! I found pros that made more sense. The cons usually came from first hand accounts and biased information, whereas the pros came from well known (trusted) organizations that have looked in to the behaviours of pit bulls. This past year, a pit bull was named the "American Hero Dog" at The 2013 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. Uh, cool!!
It requires digging. People these days are too close minded, ignorant and unable to accept opinions other than their own. I do not like arguing with people of this nature because it makes me lose hope for the future development and enrichment of future generations. We hold the power but are not using it. It's time to take a stand. Seeing as it is now 2014, make a difference. I know that I have really dropped the ball on a lot of social issues, but I am determined to make a difference. I am willing to hop out of my shell and expand my knowledge of the world. I challenge you, the reader (and myself), to not believe everything on Facebook and social media. If you are interested or passionate in a subject, do some research. It won't harm you to learn a little bit more. The internet, books and magazines (not People or Us Weekly) are yours to utilize. So use it. Knowledge is power.
