THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (1998) SENTENCE STARTERS
Here are some sentence starters from the movie “The Man in the Iron Mask” from 1998, based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. Feel free to change pronouns etc. as you need.
“What he wished to kill was his own pain.”
“A fool’s blade can be sharper than his brain.”
“Why was this done to me?”
“You knew that this was happening. You knew!”
“You came to restrain me?”
“I came to bring you hope.”
“My wish is to enjoy this party.”
“I grow tired of this attitude. You’re surrounded by beauty, by intrigue, by danger - What more can a man want?”
“There’s more in me to love than a crown.”
“Of all the wonders I’ve seen, I never looked upon anything as beautiful as you.”
“Look around you! The robins are singing, the pigeons are churring. Can’t you listen to their song?
“Now we know that some problems can’t be solved with a sword.”
“Some problems can’t be settled without a sword.”
“If a king is dishonourable you are removed from your oath of honour.”
“An oath is an oath exactly because it cannot be removed.”
“The next time we meet, one of us will die.”
“I can see that your heart carries a secret burden.”
“What do you remember?”
“You seek facts, but you should be seeking the truth.”
What gives you the right to judge me? To play god with the lives of others?”
“If I don’t kiss you I die anyway.”
“I’m also more intelligent than anyone else.”
“The greatest mystery of life is who we truly are.”
“One day I will ask for your forgiveness.”
“You have the chance to be a king. If you have the heart to take that chance.”
“I cannot bear to see you cry.”
“Not to love you was a treason against my heart.”
“More wine!”
“Well I’m a genius, not an engineer.”
“A palace is hardly a prison.”
“If you can’t give me a reason, I won’t do it.”
“He forgives me for all that I would do. But how can I forgive myself?”
“I’m offering you the perfect solution.”
“Don’t look so shocked.”
“I wear the mask. It doesn’t wear me.”
“I loved your mother. I love her still.”
“All that you’ve suffered I would gladly had borne myself to keep it from you.”
@wmina ( continued from here )
It has been a foolish question, Arthur realizes that the moment the words leave his mouth. None of them is sleeping particularly well, especially not after the most recent events. The young lord senses Quincey’s growing restlessness and the deep concern in Van Helsing’s and Jack’s faces as they are searching for solutions.
But the worst part is seeing Mina getting paler with every passing day. This time Arthur recognizes the signs, he knows what is going to happen and it terrifies him. Lucy’s death is still omnipresent for all of them, it haunt him each night and he cannot bear the thought of losing yet another dear person in an equally horrible way. While the poor woman herself radiates as much hope as she can and keeps a gut-wrenching smile on her lips, her husband suffers much more visibly. Harker faces the same truth that he did and Arthur feels an endless amount of pity for both him and Mina. They too keep him awake and therefore guarding their door hardly seems like a sacrifice to him, if this is the only little comfort he can offer.
“You are right. And I’m afraid there will be no peaceful sleep for us until this whole matter can be brought to an end.” They would not rest unitl then, with this danger still waiting in the shadows. The assurance, that his attempt hasn’t been completely in vain, that she even missed such dull conversations, made Arthur return her smile as genuinely as he possibly could. “Dearest Mina, should you ever desire a little talk about the weather or London’s finest hosts - I’ve been rather well trained in these subjects.”
He means it mostly in a humorous manner, to lighten the mood, but the offer still stands. If Mina requires distraction Arthur would do everything in his power to grant her that.

hrker:
STARTER / @hlmwood
the morning broke through london’s rooftops . birds sang their songs and sunlight caressed jonathan harker’s face with such tenderness , he thought he might weep . what cruelty , to think that during all those days of captivity , the world had carried on being beautiful and bright . what cruelty to think that the same would happen without lucy westenra in it . the sky was painted in shades of orange and blue , colors that felt alien to harker’s gaze . he had been surrounded BY RED for so long that all which was not drenched in such color could not possibly be for him to gaze upon . the light reflected against mr . harker’s now silver hairs . the morning buried its’ fingers into the evidence of the trauma bestowed upon him by the count and his spiteful brood . someone else had walked into the garden to stand next to him . ARTHUR HOLMWOOD was a man of immaculate reputation . jonathan had known who he was but had never met him . not properly , at least . but lucy had chosen him . he could be nothing but short of MAGNIFICENT if his dear friend had decided to devote herself to him .
“ it grieves me that we must meet under such pretexts , mr. holmwood . ” jonathan said , gaze steady on the horizon , keeping both hands folded behind his back . it was a painfully formal stance , but harker feared that , if he were to allow himself to look arthur in the eye , he too would BREAK . “ it is of my understanding that lucy cares ─── cared for you deeply . ” words lingered in the air between them . jonathan’s mistake had wounded him . he still could not believe lucy ( she , of all people ! ) had been taken from them so violently . to think of her , dead , headless , spending her last moments plagued by fear and panic … it was too much for him to take . IT HAD BEEN HIS FAULT THAT MONSTER HAD GOTTEN TO LONDON . he should be the one lying six feet under , not her . but all of these thoughts were too painful and honest to be spoken out loud , so jonathan offered a very quiet apology . one that couldn’t possibly bring mr. holmwood the comfort he deserved .
“ i’m sorry for your loss . ”
Jonathan Harker. He could hear Lucy’s voice again, talking about sharing their married bliss with the other couple, inviting each other to tea, raising their children together. She had been so exited and joyful that day and he had smiled brightly at his fiancée, equally at seeing her like this and at the thought of the future ahead. Now it all seemed far away, a distant, fleeting dream. Reality on the other hand was cruel and brutal and dark, without Lucy illuminating it. He himself had stifled out that light, no matter how desperately Arthur tried to see what happened differently. It still felt like he had killed the woman he loved and guilt and grief still filled him up, as the young lord came to stand beside Harker.
“The regret is shared by me, Mister Harker. She spoke quite fondly of you and of couse your wife.”, he managed to utter eventually, eyes fixed on an uncertain point in the grass. His voice breaks at Jonathan’s next words and hearing the mention of Lucy, dearest, lively Lucy, in the past tense. It takes long moment for Arthur to regain some composure, to blink back useless tears. “Thank you, truly. As far as I understand it, you have suffered through quite a lot yourself. and your presence here testifies great courage. I’m grateful that you decided to assist us, despite everything.” Perhaps Arthur didn’t know Harker before these events, not personally at least, but even he can sense the deep burden the other man carries The early shimmer of white in his hair and his whole posture bear enough witness to that.
ARTHUR'S PARENTS
father: William Holmwood, Lord Godalming
The Holmwoods are relatively new nobility, William’s grandfather earned that honour after the Napoleonic Wars. Therefore they are still quite keen on establishing the family and distinguish themselves. William was raised to be strong and composed, to keep them in their place, which in his case led to an almost cold persona, who barely shows any affection. These are the qualities he wanted to install in his own son as well, once Arthur was born. But the boy couldn’t live up to such expectations. Arthur was a sensitive, quiet child, not fit for excessive physical training and more drawn towards reading and learning in general. The older he got, the more he felt his father’s disappointment and discontent. No matter how hard he tried to gain William’s approval and with that his love nothing seemed to be enough (a notion he would project on others even as an adult). William also wasn’t above verbally degrade the boy and as time went by, Arthur believed such words and it turned into a low self esteem he would never fully free himself of. Yet he never truly stopped trying and did his best to master at least the pistols and accompanied his father on his long hunting trips. Once his mother died the tense atmosphere in the estate became too much for Arthur and when he got the opportunity to go to Oxford and study, he gladly accepted it. Once he finished school with a degree in law, he had to return home, but he grew at university and soon removed himself from this environment. He escaped on long journeys most of the time, unil he intended to propose to Lucy. His father’s illness filled Arthur with regret and his deep, honest wish to conciliate made him spend so much time at his side. He hoped for some final words of love or at least of apology, but in vain. William Holmwood died without giving his only child and heir any of this.
mother: Delilah Holmwood, Lady Godalming (née Beauchamp)
Delilah was born into an old noble family. As a young woman of great intellect, she knew her worth and was aware of the good catch she was. The decision to marry William Holmwood was not one of love, but made with long consideration and to both of their advantage. At the age of 18 Delilah married the 31 year old William in London. After two years without an heir they both got worried, but eventually she found herself pregnant with Arthur. With that she saw her duty as a wife done and after her son was old enough to be left alone, she often travelled to Bath and other places in England (her son certainly inherited her restless spirit and desire to see more of the world). Arthur’s successes in school did delight her and while her disposals of affections were rare, they meant a lot to the boy. She also encouraged the friendship with Lucy, as she noticed the positive influence the Westenras had on Arthur. Delilah’s sudden death after a stillbirth affected Arthur, who was just 11 at this point, greatly. The little warmth he had experienced in his home disappeared with his mother and left him utterly devastated. William grew even more distant and cold towards his son and as a result Arthur spent even less time at the estate and more with Lucy, until he eventually went to university.
My art playlist - that strange place where you go from "a sadness runs through him" and "get home" (bastille) directly to "whistle" 😂😂😅
okay but who of you cowards is gonna do a tanz der vampire au with me??
Well, my dear, number One came just before lunch. I told you of him, Dr. John Seward, the lunatic-asylum man, with the strong jaw and the good forehead. He was very cool outwardly, but nervous all the same. [...] Well, my dear, number two came after lunch. He is such a nice fellow, an American from Texas, and he looks so young and so fresh that it seems almost impossible that he has been to so many places and has had such adventures. [...] Oh, about number three - I needn’t tell you of number three, need I?
