“        and this is the conclusion you have come to?   after everything we have been through,   this is what you take away?         ”                 there is a harshness to her tone,   one she seldom brings into conversation with her dear husband.   though this is hardly a conversation;   for it is not a civil dialogue about the weather,   or london’s current state of affairs,    or gossip about the new couple who has moved in two houses down from them.     it is something more akin to an argument,    though jon would vehemently argue against mina’s use of the word.    no,   they would be simply discussing how their opinions differed on the subject of the treatment of creatures other than humans.

it was clear jonathan’s time with the count had been more than anyone could endure twice over.   no matter how mina felt on the subject,   she would never deny him his experience or its’ aftermath.   but surely,   he could find it within himself to feel for the creatures forsaken by the sunlight as she did,

(   BUT HE HAD NOT SEEN THROUGH THE COUNT’S EYES.   HAD NOT WATCHED THE PITIUS CREATURE STRUGGLE IN HIS LABORS.    ALL HE KNEW WAS THE MAD RAMBLINGS OF VAN HELSING,   WHO SPOKE SO ILL OF ANYTHING HE DID NOT UNDERSTAND   ...    HOW COULD HE FEEL ANYTHING BY ALL - CONSUMING HATRED?   )

hands bury themselves in the fabric of her dress,    curling around a pattern of brambles and vines.        “     jonathan,    ”      she tried to soften her voice,   to speak to that wide - eyed,   curious boy she had stolen away with,    who had sworn his love on the moon and the stars and god himself.     “     i do not want to upset you,    but i only wish that you would not be so quick to judge.   nor to take the actions of one   ...   creature as the nature of them all.    perhaps if we studied them,   we could begin to understand why they are as they are.   my father assures me that he will continue to give me an allowance.   we could use some of it to ...     ”        her voice trailed off,   mind already somewhere else entirely.   this plan of her’s was insane,   she knew it.    to start something dedicated to the study of those like the count,   like lucy,    would be an incredible feat.   but it was a risk she was willing to take,    if only jonathan was at her side.

                 The    notion   of    losing    someone   you    love    is   terrifying    –    Mina    has   feeble    memories    of   her    parents,    before   orphanages,    before    digging   herself    out    of   the    metaphorical    dirt,   however,    right    now,   Jonathan    Harker    has   become    her    family,    the   only    one    she   has    left.    Lucy   is    gone,    the   light    within    Mina   has    dulled    down   considerably    after    that,   and    in    the   growth    of    her   bangs,    the    slight   dishevelment    of    her   hair    that    used   to    be    so   firmly    pinned    up,   and    the    thinning   of    her    face   and    skin,    one   can    tell    that   Mina    Harker    is   slowly    changing    –    the    curse   is    taking    its   toll    on    her,   and    as    terrifying    as   that    thought    is,   what    terrifies    her   the    most    is   the    idea    of   Jonathan    seeing    it.

                And    yet,   here    she    is   saying    it    –    I    do   not,    by    any   means,    wish    to   leave    your    side.   Allow    me    to   be    your    help,   your    aid.    Because   Mina    is    selfish,   and    if    she   is    to    die   eventually,    she    wishes   for    it    to   be    humanely    done   by    her    husband,   and    no    one   else.    She’s    been   avoiding    the    subject,   burying    herself    in   research    and    typewriting    for   the    sake    of   ignoring    the    impeding   darkness    that    looms   over    her    head,   lurks    deep    within   her    heart.    But   Jonathan,    oh,    Jonathan   knows    her    better   than    anyone    else,   and    she    does   not    wish    to   hide    anything    from   him    –    aside   from    being    husband   and    wife,    they   are    partners.    

               And    she’s   taking    his    hand   in    hers,    and   her    own    are   dried    and    colder   than    his’,    and   calloused    from    the   typewriter    she’s    been   so    fiercely    abusing   –    but    she   knows    Jonathan    loves   her    not    because   her    hands    are   soft    and    smell   of    orange    blossom   scents.

                      “    yes.   yes,    that    is   how    I    feel,   ”    she’s    offering   a    reassuring    smile   –    poor    Jonathan,   poor    husband    of   hers,    he    is   far    too    tormented   by    this    to   be    able    to   handle    it    on   his    own.    He   needs    her    by   his    side,    and   Mina    needs    to   remain    by    his   side    to    feel   she’s    doing    her   best    to    fight   back    –    she   will    not    fall   victim    of    a    monster    by   way    of    laying   and    lamenting    on   a    bed,    sobbing   for    mercy    from   God.    That    is   not    who    she   is,    “    dear   husband,    God    as   my    witness,    I    will    stay   by    your    side.   no    matter    how   dangerous,    or    how   terrifying,    I    shall   remain    here,    standing,   with    you.    ”    it’s    not   a    plea,    she   is    not    asking   for    permission,    “    I    cannot   offer    physical    strength,   but    I    can   offer    my    mind.   ”    she    squeezes   Jonathan’s    hand,    thumb   strokes    his    knuckles,   “    it    is   called    marriage,    dear   Jonathan,    this    partnership    we’ve   signed    up    for.   It    means    you   and    I    are   to    keep    fighting   together    until    he   very    end.    ”

✮ Creature Starters ✮

Despite that same fear that ran wildly through the good doctor’s poisoned veins each and every moment of his existence, that dread that he truly was nothing more than a monster, that belief, to hear it uttered aloud -- - it still hurt, perhaps more than any stake to the heart ever could. Yet perhaps that wasn’t what hurt most of all, maybe it was that Jonathan didn’t have the heart to argue which made it all the more painful, personal, as though the hunter had pressed the heel of his shoe against the Ekon’s chest and began to twist it slowly with every ounce of his weight.

“Yes... I know.” The veteran’s gentle voice slipped through the air, passing over the chill of his tongue as those pale and stormy eyes bore down on the man in front of him. “And I understand your reasoning more than you may dare to imagine...” He didn’t want to fight, didn’t want to harm him, or anyone, in fact, ever -- - but should he need to defend himself, he would, there were far more important matters to attend to than some petty squabble between the hunters and hunted. In his eyes, at least. His work, his patients, they needed him and that was all that truly mattered. “But know that while I cannot change what I am, much to my dismay, I might add... I am, and always will be, a doctor first, and an Ekon second.”

naturally, as his luck tended to go, the time that he was stuck in a dark and empty house was the time that he had a traumatised, jumpy man like jonathan harker as a companion. harker’s mental state was on shaky ground at the best of times, but when darkness was an added component, things became ten times worse. lewis wouldn’t have chosen this abandoned dump if there had been any other option, but after the carriage had thrown a wheel, sheltering here sounded like a better idea than standing around in the storm until another carriage passed. wincing, he gently attempted to pry harker’s iron grip from his arm. “ mr. harker, i — yes, just let go, please — i am quite certain it is nothing more than the house settling. if you can bear a bit of time on your own, i might see if there are lamps to be lit, hm? ”

“i do believe i could ask you that same question,” the sound of the party spills out into the cold night from the balcony doors ; it seems she has been spotted out here. the air turns her breath into puffs of white steam and her cheeks and nose are flushed a bright pink with the chilly air. she is not dressed for the temperature - - - her fine ballgown is much more suited for the room beyond the doors behind, and the metal of her bejeweled necklace ( a gift from her fiancé ) is cold against her throat. snow can at least be glad it is not the prince who found her out here. IT IS NOT THAT SHE DOES NOT LIKE HIM ; only she does not love him as he does her. it stings sometimes. truthfully, she had stolen out onto this balcony to avoid another dance, but that would not be what a princess-to-be should say.

“you can see the stars very well from here,” is what she says instead, tilting her head back to look up at the brilliant lights against the dark sky and weighs sounding proper and being honest, “and my feet are aching from all the dancing ; this seemed as good a place to any to hide away for a bit.”

" undoubtedly. ”  came the count’s agreement,   in a voice too soft to have been an act.     he has stood over the rostrum for the better part of an hour,   flipping through the pages of a book so old that it might’ve predated even the castle itself.     his massive,   monolithic form hovered so closely to the pages that it gave the impression that the count feared jonathan’s eyes prying into what they otherwise ought not have known.   

              “ war is for fighting.     it is history that favors the winners.    you englishmen should be well-acquainted with the notion,   what with your taste for conquest, colonization and guerrilla victory. ”
