On the northwest Belgian coast, there is a little known tradition: shrimp fishing on horseback. The activity consists of what its name describes: fishing shrimp on a horse. In the 15th century, shrimp fishing on horseback was still practised on the North Sea coasts in France, the Netherlands and even the South of England. This activity represented an extra revenue needed for the household. Nowadays there is only one place in which it is still ongoing: Oostduinkerke, a sub-municipality of the municipality of Koksijde.

sent email to my state gov and local reps re: a fast-tracked ai data centre planned in my suburb, it didn't have any checks or balances or follow normal approval procedures or involve local council at all someone in state government judt approved it bc they assert it's of great economic improtant so it can be on the same kind of program that allows large scale housing projects to go ahead without community involvement or normal risk/benefit assessments... my message was basically that the centre should be cut from that program as the idea that it is "of great economic importance" is a huge overreach, and that proper due process should occur (I didn't waste my time talking about all my personal concerns such as surveillance etc) but I was a bit torn like I had a bunch of references and ended up just writing it more like a formal letter and didn't include them or any citations but now that I've sent it I feel like I should've bc I've overestimated how diligent the council offices will be in verifying the readily available info on the issues I did raise.
