Gonna rant for a second bc I saw a post on my dash with a dumbass addition from a gringo so like. It's so funny when gringos specifically wanna get up in arms about latin america "giving sanctuary" to nazis after WWII because like. Nazis who fled to Brasil and Argentina were illegally smuggled into those countries by wealthy collaborators, and had to change their identities and spend the rest of their lives in hiding to avoid being tried for their crimes. Nazis who fled to the US were taken there as part of an official government program that gave them cushy government jobs as scientists and engineers. Only one of those situations is one I'd describe as a country "giving sanctuary" to nazis.

alright. people on bluesky are getting upset that ZUN apparently AI-generated a Background for the latest Touhou game. I'm officially on the "Oh my god who cares" side of the "AI" debate

I was already incredibly rocky on either side because there's just so much strawmanning about the subject. But like... I can't bloviate about perception of art and any stupid inherent "value" if people are even gonna start getting upset that a solo indie dev used "AI imagine generation" to make. a background. And even if the entire game was for some reason AI generated.... Like... Ok?

He's literally the core artist, he used some stupid tool to generate a tertiary asset (a snarkier person would note how funny it is that you're worried about the "background" in a touhou game of all games), nobody was directly impacted monetarily (outside of ZUN apparently possibly losing profits because people are upset about this), and like...

He's a fucking Artist. He knows how to make art. Who cares if he was like "fuck it. I don't feel like making this background"????????

Hey so the game came out and turns out the generated backgrounds also serve a narrative purpose because the game's incident was caused by AI-generated misinformation and this is even why the generated backgrounds in question first appear inside the pyramid that's been corrupted by said generated misinformation.

Truly this was already such a fucking Nothing controversy already, but the fact the generated images in question literally serve a narrative purpose as ZUN's own critique of generative AI and how it should be used, which lines up with his beliefs that it can be a useful tool for artists but is also overblown by techbros trying to overhype it, just makes it even MORE of a Nothing Fucking Controversy in retrospect. I hope everyone who was outraged by this feels fucking stupid now.
