Support a PoC-owned indie bookstore!

TL;DR, an indie bookshop run by two PoC is being harassed by TERFs after they announced that they will no longer be stocking books by J.K. Rowling.

Hey friends! There’s a fantastic, indie bookstore in my town that has recently faced harassment from awful, hateful people.

The store is run by two people of color who have worked their asses off to create a bookshop that caters to marginalized people and their work.

They’re closed to the public due to Covid-19, but they ARE offering online orders! If there’s a book you’ve been looking for, consider supporting Third House Books! They’re one of the few indie bookstores left in my area, and they really put a lot of love into the community. They specialize in books by, about, and for marginalized people, and carefully curate their stock to present works from marginalized authors.

What’s everybody’s plans for the next Solarpunk Action Week in September?

I don’t have any concrete plans yet, but I’m working on a proposal to present to my IWW branch and I might just send it up the chain to our regional coordinating committee and the Environmental Unionist Caucus and see what they say, and that could be really cool!

There’s a ton of community projects we could get involved in, and I’m lucky enough to live in a subtropical zone so I can also do the gardening thing again.

What are y'all thinking of getting up to? And how can other people help?

Baby stages of planning, but it’ll have lots to do with my local tenants union. We’ve had an influx of new members and as a somewhat new member myself, I’m hoping to join some committees and be able to help out where I can. Also our state’s moratorium on evictions has been extended until August, but by September, who knows? There’ll be a ton of organizing to do around that deadline.

Friends and I are trying to set up a housing coop also, so I’m not sure where we’ll be in the planning process then, but I’m sure there’ll be work to do for that.

More personally, it’ll be some spiritual practice time, my birthday, and the first harvest that week. So it’ll be a canning extravaganza at my house - hopefully giving away some jars of goodies or trading them for other stuff! In other words: keeping as busy as possible.

I gotta check the dates, but I figure that I will be using the dehydrator I am ordering in a couple weeks and driving myself batshit trying to learn to can. I’m not sure if I’ll be harvesting potatoes by then or not. I will probably have already planted my fall crop of carrots, so…watering, weeding, and thinning carrots?

ETA: OH! And getting ready to or planting winter garlic and onions!

Definitely going to try and grow some winter veg this year…. Maybe getting some BIG TOTES to use for it since I’m in an apartment and probably will still be come September.

I’ll be working on pruning back the dying trees on my MIL’s property with a pole saw. That way, if they do come down in a high wind, the weight of the remaining branches pulls them away from the house.

She owns her house outright but can’t afford to have a tree service take them all down. She has to live off what she gets from Social Security and is on food stamps. I’m doing what I can to help her.

Hopefully the week after next we can build a keyhole garden and put in some vegetable plants to supplement what she gets.

I am hoping to do some canning as I usually get some excess cucumbers and zucchini from coworkers to make pickles.

My garden is just getting started this year and is going to be all perennials, so I don’t know how much yield I will be getting as they establish themselves. I hope to be able to share some strawberry runners with my neighbors and maybe some fresh herbs.

I am also hoping to be able to get more involved with the conservation district and nature center in my area.

Oooo! I know I’ve kept quiet about this, but I am actually planning on making jam and baking bread for the neighbors who usually have a shortage of food around September time. I’ve also already began raising my own herbs, peppers, tomatoes, and pumpkins. Can’t wait for winter garlic.

I’ll also researching how to start a Food not Bombs/Soup Kitchen in the local area, since ours doesn’t have much of one. Lots of homeless people without much help down here.

Also: it’s not much but I’m already collecting rainwater to purify and use in place of other things, such as washing clothes.

I’m hoping to grow mushrooms so that I can cut down on how much I buy at the grocery store (I eat a lot of mushrooms), organize recycling in my workspace (we have none!), remove the ACs, and start winterizing the apartment early on!

I also hope I can get a small herb garden indoors for the winter as my herb garden did NOT come through this spring/summer.

Planning on next week to make a social media advertisement for the local hackerspace. This ad is about selling a Bag-of-Craft for $5 (which will help fund the organization). This bag is a surprise bag of various craft materials that were donated to the hackerspace in the last few months. At the time we were one of the few places in the area making PPE, so some people donated materials. Now it is time to use these materials to help fund the organization through the Bag-of-Craft.

I’ll be preparing my garden for winter, covering some sod with lasagna mulch to rebuild the soil, and continuing the long process of unionizing my 10,000-person workplace :)

I’m going to do my best to subsist on food from my garden and resist pressure from work to commute as covid cases in the UK begin to rise sharply again.

I’m going to put together late fall and early spring food and medicinal seed packs and plant starts, from seed I saved or volunteers I’ve transplanted, to hand out at either the next Food Not Bombs event or to put in the Free Library box if Covid gets in the way. I’m gathering supplies and participants to start mail chains to help save the USPS and gathering supplies to help gardening-curious comrades get started in growing their own food for cheap.
